DESCRIBING PICTURES

1. Express the general idea in the picture :

This picture represents / portrays / shows, etc

2. Describe the position of things :

- At the top / at the bottom / in the middle / in the distance / in the background /

in the foreground/ on the right / on the left / In the top left corner / in the

bottom right corner... (prepositions!!)

Watch out!!! *In the middle is a woman (INCORRECT)

In the middle there is a woman (CORRECT)

- Say what people are doing (tenses!)

- Say what people are wearing and draw conclusions from it (He’s wearing a

dress shirt so he may have a job interview)

- Say when the picture could have been taken and what makes you think so

(The picture could have been taken in the 80’s because of the woman’s

hairstyle)

3. Talk about your impressions:

- She looks / seems worried because...

- He looks as if...

- It reminds me of...

4. Compare the pictures :

- They are quite similar /different...

5. Talk about the topic

In my opinion / I prefer / I’d rather / I’m for-against / I have mixed feelings about /

It seems to me, etc

TIPS

- Remember, the examiner wants to hear you talking, so you NEED to talk. If

you don’t know anything about the topic , make it up.

- Remember to use vocabulary suitable for your level and register. For

example, good, bad, sad, happy are ok, but if you are an intermediate student

you may also want to use : exciting, depressed, disappointed, thrilling, etc
