From the Oracle Firewise Board Horses can be a special problem if the community is required to evacuate quickly in the face of a forest fire or other catastrophic event. The following firewise action ideas are offered to insure horses survive. Please read them, clip them and share them with horse lovers. 1. Teach the horse to IMMEDIATELY step into a trailer and tie. Make sure the horse is tied safely because there may be a need to load a loose horse during the evacuation process. Loose horses in a trailer are a disaster waiting to happen. 2. Take at least ONE BALE OF HAY and ONE BUCKET. A person never knows where they and their horse will end up that day. 3. If a person CANNOT TAKE their horses, TURN THEM LOOSE. They have

Evacuating horses during fires and natural disasters

great survival instincts, and they won’t be dying in a locked barn. 4. If a person TURNS THEM LOOSE, write a phone number on them in some way. Use spray paint, shoe polish, anything at hand, to mark them clearly. 5. If a person turns them loose, TAKE THEIR HALTERS OFF. People don’t want them getting hung up on any debris they will be encountering while

On Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, Pinal County Animal Care and Control will be holding rabies clinic in Oracle from 9 a.m. to noon, at the sheriff’s substation, 1470 N. Justice Drive. The rabies vaccinations will be $9, cash only. They will be selling county

licenses at these clinics for $15 for altered dogs and $30 for unaltered dogs, cash or check will be accepted. All dogs in Pinal County are required by state law (ARS § 11-1008) to be vaccinated against rabies and licensed. Cats are not

required to be vaccinated against rabies but it is highly recommended. Rabies is a very real and 100 percent deadly disease that affects all mammals including humans. By having your animals vaccinated you can help protect your animals and

These animals are very common in our county, especially in the more rural areas. If a pet has an

interaction with wildlife, a rabies vaccination could be the factor that saves that pets life.

By Sigrid SettleSpecial to the Crier I’ve been off the grid for a while but it’s not because of an animal emergency here at the Ranch or any physical damage to my structures. I must admit I’ve become an addict. I’ve been watching episode after episode of the television series entitled “The Big Bang Theory”. I’d caught glimpses of it from time to time on television, but I finally purchased all but one of the season’s series and have been watching them ever since they arrived in the mail from Amazon. Sheldon, Penny, Leonard, Raj and Howard have become daily companions of sorts as I watched their antics day after day, scientific geeks who brought so many laughs to my daily routine. I started wondering why this series

And so it goes at the ranch …had caught me up in such a rapture of unequivocal attention until the other day

had with her significant other. During the course of their conversation over dinner, she mentioned he should feel welcome to talk with me when I call their house. He said I always call to talk to her and that’s why he hands the phone over without having a conversation with me. She mentioned I was a big fan of his and would enjoy talking with him as well. He looked at her and said, “Oh, I need to do the social thing.” And at that point Sheldon, who has an absolutely analytical approach to things, popped into my mind. I then realized my children are geeks, each in their own right. When they are all together I can follow about half of their conversations as they drift into mathematical theories whose language and origin are unknown to me. My brain races to keep up with them, but somehow I feel lost about halfway through the conversation. About that time I realize the best I can do is offer them a drink or a cookie. And then I came to realize something else, that I didn’t feel strange or out of place when they have their mathematical conversations. They are my offspring and even if they are in a world that seems foreign or strange to me I don’t feel out of place. I don’t feel out of place because I know they love me with an assurance that is unshakeable. It seems, when love comes into the mathematical equation of life, acceptance follows. And that’s what I see with Sheldon, Penny, Leonard, Raj and Howard, completely different personalities, but an absolute acceptance of each of their idiosyncrasies. I don’t think it gets any better than that. And so it goes at the Ranch…

By John HernandezOracle Towne Crier Troy Letwak, owner of Car Quest in Oracle, traveled to Sturgis, South Dakota to attend one of the largest bike rallies in the world. Sturgis has a population of 6,500 but in August it attracts hundreds of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts from the United States and around the world. Troy traveled over 900 miles to attend the event filled rally and also to show the custom motorcycle that he built. Troy spent seven months working full time to build his custom bike. He did all the work on it except for the painting. He also pumped a whole lot of money into the project. It was the first custom motorcycle he has built but chances are it won’t be the last. Troy entered his bike for the

first time in two custom motorcycle shows. On Aug. 6 he competed in the Easyriders bike show at the Easyriders Saloon. He entered the bike in the Radical Class competition. On Aug. 8 his bike was entered in the Extreme Class at the Rat’s Hole Custom Bike Show at Buffalo Chip campground. There were around 40 entries in the Radical Class. The judges for the competition were the editors of Easyriders, Wrench, Road Iron, In the Wind and V Twin motorcycle magazines. Troy’s motorcycle took First Place. He won a trophy, a $200 gift certificate from the Dennis Kirk Motorcycle Shop and his custom bike will appear in a future issue of Easyriders magazine. The Rat’s Hole Custom Bike Show attracts some of the world’s

best builders. The event features a group of international judges that select the winning bikes in over 15 categories. It is one of the largest bike shows in the world. Motorcycle fans have compared this show to the Grammy’s saying it is “the best of the best” in custom built motorcycles. There were over 100 bikes entered in the Extreme Class competition. This year’s event was held at the new Crossroads bar at Buffalo Chip. After the judges tallied their scores, Troy’s custom motorcycle had taken Second Place. This was quite an achievement for a first time builder. Troy said he was amazed at some of the “big time” builders who were hauling their motorcycles in big semi-trucks and trailers and had flown into the event. Country Music Television

(CMT) and the History Channel filmed parts of the show including his bike. CMT is currently broadcasting a weeklong show on the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Troy was interviewed at the Easyriders bike show by the History Channel, which may show the interview on one of their programs. Troy is going into the custom motorcycle business and has opened Recluse Customs. They will build custom motorcycles and do customizing work. You can contact him at 520-275-8122. Troy will be showing his motorcycle at the Vegas Bike Fest Oct. 3-6 at the Vendor Village at Cashman Center in Las Vegas. Congratulations Troy on a job well done and good luck in Vegas!

By Dr. Michael MilesSpecial to the Crier Viruses are minute biological entities that infect living organisms by splicing themselves into DNA. By doing so, every time their host DNA gets replicated, so do they. This makes them somewhat parasitic and perpetuates their existence ad infinitum. Infection with a virus

most often results in a harmful effect, though there are speculations that some evolutionary progressions can be attributable to the introduction of the rare “favorable strand” into the host DNA. In addition to these natural, random introductions of viruses, purposeful genetic engineering is currently exploring ways to effect

other changes in the biology of our lives. Viral strands of DNA are smaller than one-one-hundredth the size of bacteria. They are undetectable through a microscope. Diagnosis is often done only by observing the body’s immune response to their presence. There are millions of different kinds

that exist on this planet. Humans collect quite an array of viruses as we travel through life. Some are more problematic than others. Some of the more common viruses that we see in our daily lives include: the Chickenpox Virus (varicella), Mumps, Measles, Rubella (German measles), Epstein Barr Virus, Herpes Virus, HIV, HPV, Bird Flu, Swine Flu, Ebola, Hepatitis, Parvo, Rabies and West Nile. Some of these viruses are very resilient and some are not. Some can live outside of a body for a while and

some are disabled within seconds of leaving a host. Fortunately, one that is associated with extremely poor outcomes, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), is a very weak virus that quickly dies outside of the body. On the other hand, some viruses, such as the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), can damage tissue and greatly increase the possibility of cancer. There is a constant fear that one day a new virus will surface that will have far reaching disastrous effects as seen in 1918 with the Spanish Flu Virus. It killed between 50 and 100

million people. However devastating this was, it could have been worse. To put it into perspective, its death toll was about 20 percent of those infected while the Bird Flu (H5N1) had a reported death rate of 60 percent. And, the Ebola Virus claimed as high as 90 percent of those infected. Rabies has an extraordinary 99.99 percent kill rate once brain symptoms appear which is why immediate attention is essential. It is simple and it is life saving. Though these figures are alarming, most viruses that humans contract exist inside the body without interfering too greatly with everyday life. The Herpes Virus is an example of a virus that lies dormant most of the time. It usually finds a hiding place in nerve cells. Unfortunately, stress can create a condition that aggravates these viruses and they may surface on the skin in the form of little blisters known as vesicles. There are a variety of treatments that help suppress the expression of viruses. It is, however, rare to totally eradicate them from the body. A note of interest; the term virus has been adopted in recent times to identify computer programming codes that invade other computers. It is easy to see the similarities between biological and electronic types of encoded strands (viruses) that forcibly splice into existing “normal” strands of code (DNA or computer).
