Organization

Report

It has been a great year at YPAL! 2015-16 brought a wave of change to our organization, and I am pleased to report that we are stronger than ever. Over the past 12 months, YPAL has re-evaluated its structure and now offers more mission-minded and first-rate programs for our members. Our members have seized this opportunity by increasing their engagement in the community, further honing their professional skills, and strengthening their professional and personal networks.

Here are a few highlights of this year’s accomplishments:

YPAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Excelerate – My initiative as YPAL President this year was to create a program which offers professional development training in areas that directly affect young professionals. After extensive research and surveying our members, we decided on topics that have proven to resonate with all young professionals. These include understanding and working with different generations, effective written and spoken communication, and the power to persuade and influence others. Our first Excelerate session was held in March and was a sold-out success. We look forward to offering this training on a quarterly basis and at a cost that is attractive to young professionals.

Connect, Engage, and Develop Series – A concept that started during the previous board term, YPAL re-focused its event structure and has started tailoring its programing toward all young professionals, rather than specific industries. YPAL’s mission is to connect, engage, and develop the area’s young professional population, so we re-focused our flagship events to those specific topics. See photos of some of these events on the next page.

With the Connect Series, we offered an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at 21C Museum Hotel, Brown-Forman Tasting, and Louisville City Football Club. The Engage Series explored emerging trends in the community around us, such as Kentucky for Kentucky, Forecastle Festival, and a backstage look at the local arts community, which was held in the newly renovated Speed Art Museum. The Develop Series taught our members valuable information, such as tips for buying your first home, negotiation techniques, personal branding, and how to master the daunting task of business networking. The renewed focus of our event schedule hit home with our members, and we have seen record attendance.

5:48 Networking – After much research, we learned that most professionals come to YPAL to connect with other professionals outside of their own

industry. To that end, we launched 5:48 Networking which allows people of all industries—such as legal, finance, healthcare, building, and manufacturing—to connect with people they don’t normally interact with on a daily basis. The first event was a great success with over 125 registrants.

Live, Work, and Play Survey – The spring cohort of our Emerging Leaders Program conducted a survey as to why young professionals live, work, and play in Louisville. They collected a staggering 550 detailed opinions of a demographic that our business community does not regularly hear from. The results were released with much fanfare, garnering significant media coverage. We are energized in knowing the collective voice of young professionals will be heard and utilized by leaders in the city and business community.

Organizational Assessment and Restructure – As a part of YPAL’s 5-year strategic plan, we conducted an organizational assessment that resulted in a restructuring that better positions YPAL for future success. We saw industry-specific committees be transformed into networking opportunities (such as 5:48) that afford YPAL the capacity and agility to grow into new and diverse segments throughout the city.

Military Initiative – YPAL’s Board of Directors is committed to assisting our country’s servicemembers with their transition from military to civilian life. With the sponsorship of Northwestern Mutual, we have partnered with Where Opportunity Knox to offer free membership and event registrations to local active and veteran servicemembers.

We are fortunate to live in a city that understands the importance of attracting and keeping talented young professionals. Our Board of Directors, Ambassadors, Advisory Council, sponsors, and members remain active and dedicated to growing our organization. It has been a privilege to lead YPAL this year, and I am excited to see what the future holds.
