OptIPuter – The Tasks Ahead

• Refine architecture and define capabilities

• Integrate efforts across teams

• Demonstrate two applications this year

• Propagate the OptIPuter message & build the community

Page 3: OptIPuter Frontier Advisory Board Discussion & Recommendations

Refine OptIPuter Architecture and Define Capabilities

• Consistent vision from abstraction to implementation

• Define expected set of services

• Refine OptIPuter node definition

• Vision: an environment designed for high performance science enabled by intelligent light paths

Page 4: OptIPuter Frontier Advisory Board Discussion & Recommendations

Integrate Efforts Across Teams

• Applications, Visualization, System Software, Optical Networking, Data Networking

• San Diego, Chicago, Amsterdam, etc.

• Develop common vision of services and testbed

• Designate/hire OptIPuter Test Bed Project Manager

Page 5: OptIPuter Frontier Advisory Board Discussion & Recommendations

Demonstrate Two Apps This Year

• Simple but powerful end-to-end systems– From data generators: S/C clusters or storage– To refined tile display

• Prove OptIPuter concept, stress system, test key assumptions

• Examples:– From electron microscope in Tokyo to display in

SD– From cluster/storage in Chicago to Amsterdam

Propagate the OptIPuter Message and Grow the Community of Users

• OptIPuter vision: an environment designed for high performance science enabled by intelligent light paths

• Must develop a consistent, powerful message

• Users buy/build OptIPuter nodes to join our community

• Make the OptIPuter ‘self propagating’

OptIPuter Progress Vs FAB RecommendationsJan 16 ‘04 to Jan 28 ‘05

• Overall excellent progress on architecture, integration, applications and message

• Objectives look good for another year

• Opportunities always exist:– To improve– To leverage external events

Page 8: OptIPuter Frontier Advisory Board Discussion & Recommendations

OptIPuter - Improvement Opps

• Architecture – Define firm test bed spec for new users– Allow test of their apps, communication with

partners– Implement version control

• Integrate teams – Designate OptIPuter test bed project manager

Page 9: OptIPuter Frontier Advisory Board Discussion & Recommendations

OptIPuter - Improvement Opps

• Applications– Demo of DVC with NCMIR data using

JuxtaView a great start– Need second demo – DVC for assimilation of

SIO data, or monitor gigabit instrumentation feeds, or?

– Define classes of apps for which OptIPuter is solution

• Collaboration– Need advance beyond Polycom demo

OptIPuter - Leverage External Events

• National LambdaRail and Global Lambda Integrated Facility instantiation– Unprecedented global fiber transport services– Ideal fit to OptIPuter capabilities/objectives

• iGRID 2005 Sept 26-30– Milestone opportunity to demonstrate and

propagate OptIPuter capabilities– Ideal forum to initiative broad new collaborations
