MULTI-USE

• A MULTI-USE WOOD FLOOR WILL NEED ADDITIONAL FLOOR COVERING TO PROTECT IT AGAINST DAMAGE FROM TABLES / CHAIRS, AND FROM STREET SHOE SCUFF MARKS.

• THERE IS ALSO A INCREMENTAL CONCERN OVER LIQUID SPILLS.

SPORTS ISSUES?

• SAFETY

• SHOCK ABSORBTION / COMFORT

• VOLLEYBALL/BASKETBALL PLAY

• WEAR FACTOR

• COMPRESSSION

• CLEANING / ODORS

SAFETY

• LEADING CAUSE OF SURFACE RELATED INJURIES IS IMPROPER FRICTION PROPERTIES OF THE SURFACE

Page 7: OPTIONS PRESENTED BY Southwest Courts & Floors, Inc. Authorized Sport Court Dealer Since 1978

TRANSLATIONAL FRICTION

•Translational Friction is the foot or shoe sliding across the surface

Page 8: OPTIONS PRESENTED BY Southwest Courts & Floors, Inc. Authorized Sport Court Dealer Since 1978

ROTATIONAL FRICTION

•Rotational Friction is the pivoting or rotation of the foot on the surface

BALL BOUNCE

•Ball bounce is measured under the DIN standards

•Ball Bounce should be a minimum of 95% (compared to concrete) for best results

•A potential disadvantage of poured floors is uneven thickness of floor, generating a non-uniform bounce (dead spots)

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

• BALL REBOUND – Minimum 90%

• Shock absorption- Minimum 53%

• Deflection– Vertical – minimum 2.3mm– Area- maximum 15%

• Rolling load

• Friction

Adhesion to concrete can be a problem with non-modular floors

Page 18: OPTIONS PRESENTED BY Southwest Courts & Floors, Inc. Authorized Sport Court Dealer Since 1978

COMPRESSION

•SOME TYPES OF VINYL WITH SOFT FOAM BACKING CAN BECOME COMPRESSED OVER TIME , LEADING TO “DEAD AREAS” UNDERNEATH THE BASKETBALL GOAL.

•WITH THE SIZE OF TODAYS PLAYERS, SOME FLOORS “BOTTOM-OUT” WITH THE IMPACT OF A PLAYER LANDING.

Page 19: OPTIONS PRESENTED BY Southwest Courts & Floors, Inc. Authorized Sport Court Dealer Since 1978

HYGIENE ISSUES

•CARPET CAN ALLOW A BUILDUP OF MOISTURE, AND THE BACTERIA / FUNGUS CAN GENERATE A “LOCKER ROOM” ODOR•SOME OF THE INDOOR TURF FIELDS HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH STAFF INFECTIONS AFTER A “TURF BURN” ABRASION. IF CARPET IS JUST VACUUMED, THE SAME BUILDUP CAN OCCUR

• REPLACEMENT / DISPOSAL ISSUES

• MOISTURE

• BUDGET ISSUES

MAINTENANCE

•All floors (including wood) require on-going maintenance to reduce dust buildup and to eliminate the scuff marks from some types of shoes.

•SPORT COURT FLOORS DO NOT NEED TO BE STRIPPED AND WAXED.

•SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE IN “DOWNTIME” FOR CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE..

Page 22: OPTIONS PRESENTED BY Southwest Courts & Floors, Inc. Authorized Sport Court Dealer Since 1978

Life Cycle Costs

• A wood floor with heavy use is stripped and refinished once a year.

• This maintenance cost can be $1.00 to $1.50 per square foot.

Page 23: OPTIONS PRESENTED BY Southwest Courts & Floors, Inc. Authorized Sport Court Dealer Since 1978

Replacement / disposal

• Some of the existing poured floors have traces of mercury and lead. The disposal ends up being an issue with EPA / hazard waste disposal. This can run $4.00 to $5.00 per square foot.

Page 24: OPTIONS PRESENTED BY Southwest Courts & Floors, Inc. Authorized Sport Court Dealer Since 1978

MOISTURE

• WATER LEAKING ONTO A WOOD FLOOR CAN WARP AND DESTROY IT VERY QUICKLY

• IF THERE IS A HIGH MOISTURE CONTENT IN THE SLAB, THERE CAN BE LONG TERM ADHESION PROBLEMS ON PERMANENT FLOORS.

Page 25: OPTIONS PRESENTED BY Southwest Courts & Floors, Inc. Authorized Sport Court Dealer Since 1978

Budget Issues

• Suspended wood floors can run $7.00 to $12.00 per square foot depending on the suspension system and the grade of maple. Installation takes several weeks.

• Sport Court flooring can range from $5.00 to $7.00 per square foot for standard colors, with a 2-3 day average installation time.
