YEAR 9 OPTION CHOICES

Over the next few weeks we are going through the process of securing your Option Choices for Years 10 & 11. These will ultimately lead to your GCSE /BTEC qualifications and form the basis of further study and progression into the Sixth Form or onto an Apprenticeship in Years 12, 13 and beyond. It is VITAL that you pick courses which YOU want to study. It is always very difficult to make these choices and we hope we have made the process as simple as possible. Essentially, we would like you to tell us your TOP 5 choices. Once we have your TOP 5 we will then be able to design your timetable based on 3, if not 4 out of these TOP 5. It is important that you read each subject description VERY CAREFULLY, talk to your teachers, talk to your friends, listen to your teachers at Parents Evening, get careers advice and encourage your parents to attend the Information Evening and ultimately come up with your TOP 5 list. There are a few rules about what can go in your TOP 5 and these are explained on the Options Form at the back of this booklet. The main rule being that your TOP 5 list can only have a MAXIMUM of 2 non-GCSEs in it. You can choose to study a BTEC qualification, but you CANNOT put down more than 2 BTECs on your TOP 5 list. Good luck with in making your choices. Talk to your form tutor, family and friends and if you have any questions around the technicalities of your choices please e-mail me at [email protected] and I will help guide you through the process.

APPROPRIATE COMBINATION OF CHOICES & THE ENGLISH BACCALAUREATEYou are making your choices at a time in education where things are changing. You will be doing all of your exams at the end of Year 11 whereas previous students may have studied modular courses and completed exams as they went along, you will be doing all of your exams at the end of Year 11, with no opportunity for resitting. The courses you will study have changed so that all GCSEs are all examined fully at the end of the course and your BTEC courses are now much bigger in their content and involve at least 25% external assessment. Not only have the courses changed in their design, but a lot of things have changed in terms of the emphasis on the choices you make. For example, the top Universities would want you to pick mainly GCSEs and also from a select list of subjects. I would encourage you to do some research on university courses and see what sort of GCSEs they are looking for. In the main, if you pick a combination of courses that fulfil the English Baccalaureate then you will be heading in the right direction. The English Baccalaureate is a combination of subjects that recognises the achievements of students who complete a broad range of academic courses. This suite of qualifications does not replace GCSEs but will be awarded to students who achieve A*-C in English, Maths, two Sciences, one modern foreign language and one humanity. The English Baccalaureate suite of courses is popular by government, employers and universities. We would encourage you to consider this as an option if you are thinking of progressing on to graduate level jobs and courses. Students who wish to work towards this qualification must study either French or German AND History or Geography. The English, Maths and Science GCSEs are all part of core and are compulsory for all students. Core GCSEsAll students are given a core curriculum throughout years 10 and 11. This involves the following courses:GCSE English LanguageGCSE English LiteratureGCSE MathematicsGCSE Science (Triple/Double/BTEC)GCSE ICTPSHCE (Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship Education)Physical Education (PE) Over the following pages of this booklet you will be able to read about these courses and also the option subjects. Remember, we need you to put down your TOP 5 from the Option subjects, AND if you are choosing a BTEC, no more than 2 are allowed.
