KOS-003 KOH SAMUI HIGHLIGHTS

Tour Price: $155.00

March 25, 2015 08:30 AMDate:

This tour provides a great overview of the most notable sites and attractions found in Samui. Once a secret holiday get-away for wealthy Thai, the island is now a popular destination for travelers from around the world. Not surprising, given the island's lush tropical vegetation, shimmering white sand beaches and interesting sights. Starting off from the pier, you'll first embark on a scenic drive to the Big Buddha Temple.

Big Buddha Temple sits on small, rocky Fan Island, with a commanding view over the spectacular beach and aqua waters of the bay. Samui's most famous landmark, it has become a major meditation centre for local residents and foreign visitors alike. The temple centerpiece is a massive, 39-foot high, gold-painted sitting Buddha that rests atop a wide staircase decorated with ornate dragons. Able to be seen from several miles away, visitors have marveled at this spectacle since it was erected in 1792.

From here, you'll travel to your next stop, Plai Leam Temple. Newly erected in 2004, it is considered one of the most colorful temples on Ko Samui. The temple's design follows the traditions that date back centuries and provides an excellent example of how those styles still influence modern Thai architecture. The elaborate entry doors are made from two enormous slabs of Laotian hardwood and are intricately carved with images of the life of Buddha; however, the temple is most notable for its statue of Kwan Yin (or Guanjin), an 18-armed Buddhist avator of Mercy that sits in the middle of a lake. The temple is also famous for the hundreds of large fish that make the lake their home.

Continuing on, you'll travel to a scenic viewpoint that offers spectacular panoramic views of beautiful Chaweng Beach. This nearly 4 1/2 mile stretch of pristine white sand and glistening water is the longest and most popular beach on the east coast of Ko Samui.

Your final stop is at a local coconut plantation where you'll be treated to a 'Monkey at Work' show. Ko Samui regularly produces over three million coconuts each month and the locals have used monkeys to climb up the trees and pick the ripe coconuts for centuries. During your visit, you'll see how these winsome creatures not only can be trained to use their abilities to help with the coconut harvest; they'll also demonstrate their other exceptional skills during a thoroughly entertaining show. After the show, you'll re-join your coach and travel back to the pier where your tour concludes.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 1 1/2 hours of walking and there are steps to negotiate at the temple. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who are able to both make their way on and off the coach and sit in a coach seat. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Lightweight clothing, a hat, sunglasses, sun screen and comfortable, flat walking shoes are recommended.

Suitable attire is required for the temple visits. Shorts, culottes, tight trousers and leggings are not permitted. Trousers must cover the ankle and women must have their shoulders and knees covered. No tight or see-through blouses are permitted, even if a jacket is worn over them. All footwear must be removed before entering temples

Thai cuisine is a wonderful blend of flavors and dishes and this exclusive non-traditional tour is tailor-made for guests who wish to learn how this delicious food is prepared and cooked. Boarding your mini-van at the pier, it's a short transfer to a local market where you'll be joined by a food expert who will accompany you as you select the fresh items to be used in preparing today's meal. A walk through this fascinating marketplace is a unique experience you'll be glad you didn't miss. Once you've secured all of your ingredients, you'll drive to the beautiful Nora Beach Resort & Spa where your cooking class will be conducted. Upon arrival, you'll be welcomed with a traditional Thai herbal beverage and then it's time to learn how to prepare your meal. As you watch your Chef prepare the food and explain the traditional methods that are used in Thai cooking, you'll be invited to don an apron and chef's hat and lend a hand. On the menu today is a tasty chicken soup, Deep-fried stuffed crabmeat in the original shell and Thai-style fried noodles, all of which you will be able to enjoy at the conclusion of your cooking class. Topping off your meal is a refreshing coconut ice cream treat served with seasonal fruits.

Feeling replete from your Thai mini-feast, you'll have an hour to relax and explore the resort at your leisure before returning to the pier. There is an inviting sundeck (first-come, first-served basis), sparkling pool and white sandy beach at your disposal. Beach towels are available at the hotel.

KOS-006 ANCIENT TEMPLES TOUR

Tour Price: $105.00

March 25, 2015 08:30 AMDate:

Experience the fascinating past of Ko Samui on this tour that showcases three of the island's major temples or wats, including Big Buddha Temple, a noted meditation center, Wat Plai Laem Temple with its superb statue of Kwan Yin, and Khunaram Temple with its renowned mummified monk.

Starting off by coach from the pier, you'll first travel to Khunaram Temple. The Temple itself is somewhat modest, but what draws visitors is what is found in a smaller building on the temple grounds. Here, sitting upright in a glass coffin, the mummified remains of the famous Buddhist monk known as Dang Piyasilo or Phra Khru Sammathakittikhun are on display. A native of Ko Samui, the venerable ex-abbot of Wat Khunaram enjoyed a long prosperous family life until he was 50 years old, at which time he decided to devote the last part of his life to the monkhood. Following his death, which he had foreseen, his body remained un-decomposed. His family and disciples decided to place him within the casket in this position, as was requested by him in written instructions. The idea was for him to serve as a symbol to inspire future generations to follow Buddhist teachings and be saved from suffering.

Continuing on, your next temple visit is to the Temple of the Big Buddha. Situated on small, rocky Fan Island with a commanding view over the spectacular beach and aqua waters of the bay, it has become a major meditation centre for local residents and foreign visitors alike. The temple centerpiece is a massive, 39-foot high, gold-painted sitting Buddha that visitors have marveled at since it was erected in 1792.

The last stop on your temple tour is at Wat Plai Laem. Considered one of the most colorful temples on Ko Samui, it is notable for its statue of Kwan Yin (or Guanjin), an 18-armed Buddhist avator of Mercy that sits in the middle of a lake. The temple is also famous for the hundreds of large fish that make the lake their home.

Your tour concludes with a short scenic drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 1 1/2 hours of walking and there are steps to negotiate at the temples. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who are able to both make their way on and off the coach and sit in a coach seat. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Casual clothing, a hat, sunglasses, sun screen and comfortable, flat walking shoes are recommended.

Suitable attire is required for the temple visits. Shorts, culottes, tight trousers and leggings are not permitted. Trousers must cover the ankle and women must have their shoulders and knees covered. No tight or see-through blouses are permitted, even if a jacket is worn over them. All footwear must be removed before entering temples.

KOS-008 GOLFING AT SANTIBURI SAMUI COUNTRY CLUB

Tour Price: $415.00

March 25, 2015 08:30 AMDate:

Calling all golfers! Come experience the exhilaration of an exciting game of golf, played in a breath-taking setting. The Santiburi Samui Country Club is Ko Samui's first golf course and provides both challenge and charm, all within a lush tropical environment. This 18-hole championship golf course came to fame when it hosted the 2006 Bangkok Airways Open. Located on a hillside on the northern coast of Ko Samui and set amidst old coconut gardens, the golf course has a commanding panoramic view of Maenam Beach and the nearby island of Koh Phangan. Adding to the course's natural beauty, waterfalls and creeks run through the lush landscape and the verdant hills provide a picturesque backdrop.

A short transfer from the pier brings you to this awesome course, where each of the 18 holes has its own special character and challenges. From steep uphill and downhill slopes, to winding fairways that are cut into the forest and meander around cliffs and streams, this is truly one of Thailand's most unique golf courses. Starting off, the first few holes play through a mature coconut forest and then progress up the mountain. The fairways follow the natural line of the hills, creating an interesting golf game that will put your skills to the test. Rock outcroppings found on several holes also serve to raise the difficulty level.

Due to this being a mountainous course, you do not need a driver on every hole. If you play from the proper tee, this course rewards accuracy, not distance. The course requires a golf cart to get up and down the steep mountain slopes and this is included as part of your excursion. Small fairways are the order of the day on most holes, but the large greens make approach shots a little easier.

The luxury clubhouse provides comfortable changing rooms, a well stocked pro shop and a restaurant with beautiful terrace seating where you can recount your round while enjoying the surrounding scenery just a little while longer.

Please note: This tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. The maximum number per group, including non-golfers is 5. This is subject to change without prior notice. All golfers must register at the pro shop at least 15 minutes before reserved tee off time. The estimated playing time for 18 holes is 4 1/2 hours. Only the caddie is allowed to operate the golf cart. A caddie tip is not compulsory and is at the discretion of the individual golfer. No one under the age of 12 years is allowed on the course.

Men - Shirts with collar and sleeves are required. Slacks, golf shorts, or walking shorts are considered appropriate.

Women - Shirts with collar and sleeves are considered appropriate. Slacks, mid length shorts, or mid length skirt are considered appropriate.

Only soft spike or spike-less golf shoes are permitted on the golf course, practice green area, and driving range. Any footwear that might damage the greens is strictly forbidden. Tank tops, t-shirts, fishnet tops, halter-tops, bathing suits, sweats, athletic shorts, blue jeans, denim slacks or shorts are not allowed.

SIH-004 AMAZING REAM NATIONAL PARK

Tour Price: $155.00

March 26, 2015 08:30 AMDate:

Spend a magical day exploring Ream National Park, a wonderland of evergreen forests and mangrove swamps teeming with indigenous wildlife.

Leaving the pier, it's a scenic drive of approximately 45-minutes through lush countryside to reach Ream National Park. Established in 1993 by Cambodia's former King Sihanouk, the park sprawls over approximately 60,000 acres, providing a pristine, protected environment for birds, monkeys, dolphins, and all sorts of other animals. Unlike other national parks within the country, Ream has allowed the existing residents to remain, living as they have for years in a small village there.

Your exploration of the park begins with a boat ride down the mangrove-lined Prek Toeuk Sap River. Watch for flying fish and dolphin breaking the water's surface, and birds such as the Brahminy kite, grey-headed fish-eagle and white-bellied sea eagle in the estuary. Storks and egrets usually congregate along the mudflats here as well.

After disembarking your tour boat, you'll spend the next few hours on a guided walk through the woods, where you are likely to see monkeys in the trees, butterflies flitting around the path, and even more birds, as at least 150 species of them thrive here. You will also tour the village and walk along the unspoiled beach nearby and then enjoy time to relax there. Ream is truly a paradise for nature lovers and clearly shows Cambodia's commitment to preserving its endangered wildlife and ecosystems.

After touring the park, your coach awaits to transfer you back to Sihanoukville and your awaiting ship.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 3-hours of moderate to strenuous walking, over mostly natural and uneven surfaces. The park is maintained by the government and guests should be prepared to experience some areas in need of repair or maintenance. This tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Participants must be in good physical condition. Light-weight casual clothing; sunglasses; sun cap; sunscreen; insect repellant and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested.

Tour Price: $235.00

March 27, 2015 11:30 AMDate:

March 28, 2015 08:00 AMDate:

Setting off from the pier, this full day tour that showcases the splendor of Bangkok begins by traveling to Wat Trimitr where you'll visit the incredible Golden Buddha Temple. Weighing in at an incredible five and a half tons, and standing over 10 feet high, this massive statue dates back to the 700 year-old Sukhothai period. During the time of the Burmese invasions the statue was covered in plaster as a protective measure and as time passed, its gold composition was long forgotten. It wasn't until it was transferred to Bangkok in the 1950's that this was rediscovered and the statue was restored to its original glory. Proceeding on from here, your next stop is the Grand Palace and Emerald Buddha Temple, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful examples of an ancient Siamese court. Built at the beginning of the Chakri Dynasty in 1782 by King Rama I and covering nearly one square mile, the Palace served as the residence of the Thai Kings until 1949. Today, it is still used for Royal ceremonies and state occasions. Within the Palace compound is a collection of lavishly decorated buildings, bejeweled with gilt and multi-colored glass mosaics, and soaring finials topped with glittering spires. The highlight of your guided tour of the palace grounds is the Wat Phra Keo, also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. One of the most celebrated sites in all Thailand, the temple houses one of the country's most sacred objects, a splendid Buddha statue carved from a single piece of emerald-green jasper.

Following a delightful buffet lunch at one Bangkok's leading riverside hotels, you'll board a private boat, continuing your exploration of Bangkok with a leisurely cruise along the Chao Phraya River and the klongs (canals) of the city's Thonburi district. Along your route you'll see traditional teakwood houses built on stilts, as well as Wat Arun, or Temple of Dawn, and the dazzling Phra Prang, a 260-foot-high pagoda decorated with ceramic tiles and fragments of multi-colored porcelain. Before being transferred back to the pier, time for shopping will be provided at a local store that specializes in quality souvenirs, local Thai handicrafts, textiles and jewelry.

Please note: This tour consists of extensive walking and is not considered suitable for wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Comfortable, flat-heeled, closed-toe walking shoes are recommended. Suitable attire is required for palace and temple visits. Shorts, culottes, tight trousers and leggings are not permitted. Trousers must cover the ankle and women must have their shoulders and knees covered. No tight or see-through blouses are permitted, even if a jacket is worn over them. All footwear must be removed before entering temples.

Video and still cameras are allowed in the Royal Palace Grounds and in the compound of the Emerald Buddha Temple, but not inside the buildings.

Bangkok's less visited sites and hidden treasures are highlighted on this thoroughly enjoyable tour. Travel from the pier through the city's vibrant streets to your first stop, the amazing Vimanmek Mansion, the world's largest golden teakwood mansion. Built as a royal residence in 1900 under the direction of King Rama V, the mansion was only used for a few years before it fell into disuse. Surrounded by peaceful gardens and numerous Thai-style pavilions, the mansion was rediscovered in the early 1980s and transformed into a museum, commemorating King Rama V and serving as a showcase of the Thai national heritage. The vast compound includes more than 20 restored structures of the old Dusit Palace, displaying everything from ancient artifacts of Thailand's pre-history to modern-day photographs donated by the King. Following a fascinating guided tour of the mansion, you'll re-board your coach and drive to a local restaurant where a delightful Thai cooking demonstration awaits and a delicious buffet lunch.

Your afternoon begins with a visit to Jim Thompson's House, the residence of the legendary American adventurer, entrepreneur and art collector. With a minimum of 10 guests and a maximum capacity of just 16 guests, each tour benefits from a higher level of personal attention and the added flexibility and agility that come from traveling in a small group.

Oceania Exclusive tours are available for a specially selected number of tours in almost every port we visit, in every corner of the world.

A rambling collection of six traditional teak houses joined together, the house displays beautifully carved walls, stunning Thai paintings and rare Thai artifacts collected by the man who resurrected the Thai silk industry. Before returning to the pier, a stop is made so that you can take time to shop for local souvenirs, including silk, jewelry and Thai handicrafts.

Please note: This tour consists of extensive walking and is not considered suitable for wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Comfortable, flat-heeled, closed-toe walking shoes are recommended. Suitable attire is required for the Vimanmek Mansion Museum visit. Shorts, culottes, tight trousers and leggings are not permitted. Trousers must cover the ankle and women must have their shoulders and knees covered. No tight or see-through blouses are permitted, even if a jacket is worn over them. Footwear must be removed before entering the mansion. The actual tour duration may vary due to traffic conditions in Bangkok.

March 28, 2015 08:00 AMDate:

This tour of Bangkok's famous waterways allows for a truly different look at the city's vibrant character. Transferring from the pier to the boat landing, you will board a local river boat for an enlightening cruise along the bustling Chao Phya River and through the complex network of klongs (canals) in the Thonburi district. Along the way, you will enjoy picturesque scenes of traditional Thai canal life, including floating grocery stores, speeding water taxis, teakwood houses built on stilts and hidden temples.

Your first stop is at the Royal Barge Museum which houses the ornately decorated longboats that were once used for royal functions. Here, you can see the lavish Suphanahonge, a gold encrusted swan-shaped barge used solely by the king. In addition to Suphanahong, there are many other fascinating and unique barges on display, each revealing a remarkable degree of exquisite craftsmanship. Leaving the Museum, you'll next travel to Wat Arun, or the Temple of Dawn. Its wide boulevards lined with stately trees, and French colonial-style buildings contribute much to the beauty and allure of the city.

Your first stop is Cholon, Saigon's lively China Town district. Founded by Chinese immigrants in 1780, Cholon is the location of some of Saigon's finest pagodas and one of the most colorful and exciting markets in the city, Binh Tay. Visit the oldest pagoda in Saigon, Giac Lam Pagoda, built in 1744. A haven of tranquility where Taoism and Confucianism merge with Buddhism, the pagoda compound includes ornate tombs, a rare bodhi tree and an elegant statue of Quan The Am Bo Tat, the Goddess of Mercy. Continue to the Reunification Palace, where, in 1975, the Southern forces officially surrendered to the Revolutionary forces. Your final stop is at a local lacquerware factory where skillful Vietnamese artisans can be observed making lacquerware items, from the beginning stage to the finished product.

Departing the pier, drive to the delta port of My Tho where the exploration on the Mekong River begins. One of the great rivers of the world, the Mekong begins in the Tibetan Plateau and tumbles 2,795 miles to the Mekong Delta and the South China Sea. Upon arrival in the provincial town of My Tho, visit the 150-year-old Vinh Trang Pagoda, with its interesting combination of Vietnamese Khmer and French architecture. Boarding a motorized boat, begin your river cruise, passing vast fruit orchards, stilt houses, fish and shrimp farms, small canals and all manner of boats. Following lunch at a local restaurant, re-board your boat and continue the scenic cruise to another village and visit a family-run enterprise that makes coconut candy. Next, embark in smaller sampans for a scenic ride through narrow, tree-lined canals. Afterwards, cruise back to My Tho, where you'll re-board your coach for the return drive to the ship.

Tour Price: $175.00

March 30, 2015 12:30 PMDate:

March 31, 2015 08:00 AMDate:

History weighs heavily on Vietnam. For more than a decade, news reports from a war that racked the country portrayed it as a brutal abyss. Yet, only thirty years after the war's end, Vietnam's considerable attractions, including its astonishing physical beauty, rich traditional cultures and exuberant people, have emerged from the shadows. This excursion provides the opportunity to explore snippets of the American presence during the Vietnam War, and the new life of Saigon after that war. Leaving the port, drive past the site where the fortress-like US Embassy was located from September 1965 to April 29, 1975. The memories of the structure is etched in history as the site where thousands of desperate South Vietnamese, attempting to evade capture by the communist forces from the North, fought their way up the steps to the rooftop and into waiting American helicopters. Next, pass the City Square and view some of the former American BOQs and BEQs, including the Saigon Department Store, and the Rex, Caravelle and Continental Hotels. Stop at the War Museum and view countless graphic exhibits, artifacts and photographs, as well as American planes, tanks, bombs and helicopters on display.

Following lunch in a local restaurant, continue past the former residence of General Westmoreland located on the outskirts of Saigon, as well as one of the American Field Hospitals. On the way to the Cu Chi Tunnels, pass the former Saigon Airport where, in the 1970s, thousands of soldiers poured out of planes as the American presence in Vietnam continued to grow. At Cu Chi, explore the extensive tunnel system with its store rooms, sleeping quarters, kitchens, hospitals and schools. Vietnamese resistance fighters constructed the 120-mile-long underground maze, where thousands of fighters and villagers could hide during their long struggle for independence.

Saigon, known affectionately as the Pearl of the Orient, retains a charm reminiscent of its French heritage in the midst of rapid commercialization. Riding in a pedicab, or cyclo, pronounced see-klo, offers a charming and intimate way to experience the hectic pace of modern Saigon. Be pedaled through this animated and bustling city, and enjoy numerous opportunities for photos of the industrious vendors, streets full of motorcycles and pedicabs, local markets and colonial buildings. A route map will be supplied to each participant for this non-guided tour, with the sites of interest pointed out by the pedicab drivers.

Journey to the Royal Park Resort for an exuberant performance of water puppetry. Devised more than a thousand years ago by villagers from the Red River Delta in northern Vietnam to celebrate the end of rice harvests, mark religious festivals and entertain the royal court, water puppetry has evolved over the centuries from folk art to a more established art form. An important part of Vietnam's cultural heritage, this theatric form, not found anywhere in the world but Vietnam, has a traditional link to the earth, water and the local rice farmers, and is referred to as Soul of the Rice Fields. The puppets range in height from 12 to 40 inches and weigh from two to ten pounds. Many of the puppets are so heavy and complex that two or three people are required to manipulate them. During the performance, the puppeteers hide themselves behind a long screen and manipulate the wooden puppets with bamboo rods and strings while standing chest-deep in water. The show depicts events in the country's history, infused with a blend of poetry, fireworks and the watery reflections of the brilliantly colored puppets. A traditional Vietnamese band sitting to the side of the stage accompanies the performance with the alluring music of bamboo flutes, drums, bells and single-string violins. Following the exhilarating performance, return to the ship.

April 03, 2015 09:00 AMDate:

This tour is geared for those who like to travel off the beaten path and discover what lies beyond the urban areas of a destination. Boarding your coach, you'll embark on a scenic drive that transports you into the lush green countryside, passing small villages that are surrounded by bamboo fences and limestone walls.

Your first stop is at the Yen Tu Buddhist Zen monastery, situated high atop Yen Tu Mountain. Here, you'll have a chance to learn about the history of Vietnamese Zen Buddhism and how Yen Tu became the Buddhist Center of Vietnam. After fighting a fierce war with Kublai Khan's troops in the 13th century, King Tran Nhan Tong gave up his throne to become a Buddhist monk, establishing a Sect of Buddhism here on the mountain. During your visit, the monks will show you how to meditate and restore your energy through using Zen techniques. After approximately one hour at the Buddhist center, you'll travel back down the mountain, stopping along the way to capture photos of the rice fields and grazing buffalo.

Arriving at one of the small villages, you'll disembark your coach and enjoy a walk through its streets, observing a real Vietnamese community, its homes, village temples and shops. You will be invited to the home of a local farmer where you will be encouraged to chat with him about life on the farm and how he grows his crops and raises the various farm animals. No doubt it will be a memorable experience interacting with the children and seeing the altars erected to their ancestors.

After an amazing and unforgettable time spent soaking in the culture and atmosphere of this facet of Vietnamese life, it's time to journey back to the pier where your tour concludes.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2 1/2 hours of moderate walking and/or standing and there are some steps to negotiate. This tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Depart the pier for the 3-hour drive to the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi, an exquisite city boasting glorious French-Colonial architecture, numerous lakes and bustling, bicycle-cluttered streets. Upon arrival, you will make a photo stop at the peaceful Tran Quoc Pagoda, one of the oldest pagodas in Vietnam and a cultural symbol of Vietnamese Buddhism and then proceed to the imposing Ba Dinh Square, which is dominated by Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, the impressive marble and granite tomb in which the father of the country lies in state. It is closed on Mondays and Fridays, and the last visits are scheduled at 10 a.m. during the remainder of the week.

Your tour begins with a scenic coach drive along the eastern bank of Xiamen but before long, you will stop and leave your coach behind, transferring to your next mode of transportation, a bicycle! Climbing aboard your bike, you will set-off on a 40-minute cycling tour along the Island Ring Road, enjoying the fresh air and Xiamen's celebrated sea view.

After pedaling your way to Seacoast Square, you will next participate in a traditional Tai Chi class. Tai Chi is an ancient form of exercise originating from the unusual combination of self-defense and Taoism. Its slow, continuous movements create a harmony between the inner and outer body. Tai Chi features both the hard and soft martial art techniques and has been celebrated through generations of Chinese for its contribution toward human health and longevity. You will begin by observing a demonstration by the Chinese Tai Chi master and then be given the opportunity to learn the basic moves yourself.

Re-joining your coach, you will continue your tour by driving to a tea house and participating in a traditional tea ceremony. The art of drinking and serving tea plays a major cultural role in China. The Chinese tea ceremony emphasizes what the tea tastes like and smells like and each step is meant to be a sensory exploration and appreciation. During your visit, you will be treated to Tie Guan Yin, a premium variety of Chinese oolong tea boasting a very flowery, delicate aroma. You will also be served some vegetarian pie from Nanputuo Temple, which is the local dessert that best harmonizes with the tea's aroma.

Lastly, your tour travels through the old town area of Xiamen where the main street is filled with shops of all kinds, both old and new. Many of the quaint side streets here remain the same as they were decades ago. A leisurely stroll through this colorful and bustling center allows you to fully soak in the atmosphere that characterizes Xiamen before returning to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes a limited amount of walking; however, it does involve a 40-minute bicycle ride. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Participants should be in good physical condition. Weather appropriate casual clothing; sun cap; sunglasses and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

Explore the treasures of ancient Quanzhou, once China's most important port, which include a sprawling Buddhist temple and a revered maritime museum.

Depart from the pier and begin driving northeast, leaving the populous island of Xiamen behind. The ever-changing landscape along the way is mesmerizing, particularly the approach to Quanzhou, which was once the largest seaport in China. Founded in the 8th century, the strategically located city has long been a trading center, especially during its first 700 years, before the port began to silt up.

Today, Quanzhou celebrates its storied past in monuments such as Kaiyuan Temple, which was built in 686. The province's largest Buddhist temple, it is an architectural wonder that incorporates designs from various dynasties. Carvings of flying musicians grace the 100 pillars that support the roof of Mahavira Hall, ancient tales are inscribed on the temple walls, and two stone pagodas tower nearby. As you wander about, admiring the visual splendor, you'll share in the serenity enjoyed by the more than 1,000 Buddhist monks that live here.

Then, after lunch at a local restaurant, you'll visit the Maritime Museum in Quanzhou, which was originally located at the Kaiyuan Temple. Now housed in a building appropriately shaped like a sailboat, the museum paints a vivid portrait of the city's maritime history. You'll see pottery, coins and medicinal herbs from shipwrecks, treasured Islamic relics, and the remains of a 1,000-year-old boat excavated from the harbor floor in 1974. After touring the museum, you'll drive back to Xiamen.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2 1/2 hours of moderate walking with some steps to negotiate. The tour is not considered suitable for wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Casual, weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

April 08, 2015 08:45 AMDate:

Enjoy the spiritual side of the beautiful Tong'an area by visiting two of its most cherished religious attractions: the district's only Confucian temple and its oldest Buddhist temple.

Depart from the pier for a leisurely drive north and inland to Tong'an, an administrative district known for its natural beauty, hot springs and agricultural bounty. While vastly pleasing to the eye, Tong'an is also known for nurturing the spirit through its many temples. Perhaps the most revered is the Tong'an Confucian Temple, which was initially constructed in the 10th century and later rebuilt in the 19th century.

Surrounded by a lovely granite and brick wall, the elegant temple is the only one of its kind in the district dedicated to the philosophical teachings of Confucius. Meandering through the serene setting, you'll appreciate the temple's graceful architecture, symbolic sculptures and manicured landscaping. At its heart lies the Museum of Tong'an, a treasure-trove of relics collected over the past two thousand years.

Continuing on, your historical and cultural enlightenment continues at the nearby Fan Tian Temple. Constructed at the southern foot of the Dalun Mountain during the Sui Dynasty more than 1,400 years ago, it is the oldest Buddhist temple in the entire Fujian Province. Its oldest remaining building is the Brahman Tower, a three-story stone edifice that lords over the temple grounds. After an enriching visit at the Fan Tian Temple, you'll drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes over 90-minutes of moderate walking with some steps to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Casual, weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
