Optimize OpenStack Cinder Block Storage with EmulexIncrease storage return on investment (ROI) and maximize scale-out storage infrastructure

Cinder is the block storage sub-system for OpenStack, the massively scalable cloud operating system. Primarily focused on iSCSI block storage, Cinder implements services and libraries to provide on-demand, self-service access to virtual pools of high performance block storage devices.

Similar to traditional block storage, Cinder block storage is appropriate for performance sensitive scenarios, such as database storage, expandable files systems, or for any application that requires efficient and highly reliable storage. In contrast to traditional block storage OpenStack Cinder moves the block storage protocol to the virtual level, making it easy for end users to take advantage of Cinder volumes on demand. With OpenStack Cinder, users can see storage resources and provision them using OpenStack Ironic (bare metal provisioning program). These virtualized pools of block storage devices give users the control and power to use high performance block storage without having to know the infrastructure behind it.

End users require application performance. Even with the usability benefits provided by Cinder, application performance can suffer if storage performance is throttled due to poor server I/O. Only Emulex delivers server I/O with unique offload processing for advanced performance and CPU effectiveness necessary to optimize OpenStack Cinder implementations. Three key criteria for storage performance are:

■ Ease of storage and provisioning – Quickly and easily adapt to customer needs by provisioning and scaling resources as needed

■ Storage responsiveness – Access and process large amounts of data across the data center to support critical applications

■ End-to-end storage performances – From the compute node to the storage node, each component must quickly process and react to data center needs

High Performance Cinder Storage Across Operating Systems

With Emulex native inbox support of keyboard, video, mouse and storage (KVMS), Linux, XenServer, vSphere and Hyper-V, block storage devices become easy to discover and manage from their respective dashboard. Emulex delivers high performance converged Ethernet storage I/O with IP discovery offloaded onto the adapter ASIC, saving CPU overhead and time, allowing an OpenStack network room to grow, scale out and bring the software orchestration closer to the bare metal infrastructure.

Optimize OpenStack Cinder Block Storage with EmulexMaintain Responsive I/O Network and Service Level Agreements (SLAs)

OpenStack users need to quickly adapt to changing and time sensitive deadlines in order to generate revenue and perform missio- critical transactions, often in multi-tenant environments. Universal Multi-Channel™ (UMC) from Emulex creates dedicated virtual pipes, allowing each OpenStack node to efficiently route and handle iSCSI traffic at their optimum speed, without affecting performance of the network fabric. Ensuring SLAs with users on Cinder volumes means an experience that replicates every time a user logs onto the dashboard, most importantly during mission-critical times. Emulex helps meet these goals, and ensures success of Cinder resources across the network, by enabling increased VM density by expanding the amount of transactions the server can handle. Emulex adapters provide the rock solid reliability and high throughput needed for IT departments to meet user expectations, 100 percent of the time, without compromising on performance or set-up time.

End-to-End High Performance Networking

Emulex 10GbE and 40GbE iSCSI Converged Network Adapters (CNAs) for OpenStack storage nodes also accelerate storage node performance. By using Emulex adapters for connectivity across the OpenStack environment, users can get reliable performance metrics for Cinder volumes. Provisioning storage in rapid environments requires the entire infrastructure to co-operate and quickly react to OpenStack Ironic. Emulex adapters create the common fabric that brings together multiple appliances and nodes, in order to ensure rapid provisioning. Moreover, Emulex OneCommand Manager provides a central management console for all Emulex adapters, reducing operational expenditures (OPEX). Conclusion

Cinder OpenStack greatly enhances block storage usability and accessibility. Deploying Cinder with Emulex 10GbE and 40GbE CNAs for OpenStack provides key benefits that maintain Cinder usability and increase storage performance.
