At P&H Mining Equipment Inc., designing world-class dippers for the mining industry has evolved from reinventing the wheel with each new dipper design to the science of scale modeling dippers. We replicate mine pit conditions to test new concepts in the laboratory before they are brought to the pit.

To assure that your dipper investment provides the performance, cost targets, service life and reliability you’ve come to expect from P&H, we work with you as a team. Understanding your production goals, pit geometry and layout, truck-loading methods and waiting times, drilling and blasting practices, and material characteristics are all essential to matching the dipper to your specific needs.

A Breakthrough Approach To Superior Dipper Performance

To assure that your dipper investment provides the performance, cost targets, service life and reliability you’ve come expect from P&H, we work with you as a team.

Mine-Matched DippersP&H® Optima® dippers, with nominal capacities of up to 120 tons, are tailored to your mine’s conditions for optimum digging and loading performance in your particular application. Standard features include a high strength-to-weight ratio for greater efficiency and enhanced geometry for fast, easy filling, easy dumping and optimum loads.

With the latest Optima dippers, the corner radius of the lip is greatly increased to improve material flow into the dipper while at the same time working to eliminate material carry-back. The modified spade lip improves digging force at the center of the lip, and

a low-profile bail design, or a bail-less design, optimizes dump height for even the largest haul trucks. With special attention to minimizing

maintenance, Optima designs reduce corner loading and wear on the tooth adapters and

heel band, thus providing extended pin and bushing life—a great example of

the rugged durability of all P&H equipment.

Patented Adjustable Pitch Braces A difference of as little as a fraction of a degree in the dipper’s rake angle can make a significant difference in digging performance and the power consumed in the digging cycle. P&H exclusive and patented adjustable length pitch braces simplify the adjustment process with fine-tuning of ± 3 inches in either direction, and with no cutting or welding required.

P&H Snubrite® Dual Series

Hydraulic SnubberThe P&H Snubrite Dual Series system eliminates problems with maintenance-free performance and the reliability of hydraulic snubbing action. It also offers an average life of up to 10 times longer than friction disk or rubber band snubbers. Through the P&H Encore Plus® component exchange program, the unit is restored to original specifications approximately once every two years depending on usage.

TripRite™ Electronic Door Trip SystemFor decades, dipper door latch tripping mechanisms have relied on a surge of torque to the trip rope delivered by a wound rotor motor and a bank of resistors. The P&H TripRite system smoothes the process with a digitally controlled ramp-up to the required torque.

Ground Engaging ToolsChoose from a full range of tooth adapters, teeth, wear plates, wings and shrouds, all designed for high performance and long life. The TLC (Total Lip Coverage) system from our alliance partner, Berkeley Forge & Tool, Inc., virtually eliminates costly dipper lip rebuilds.

Wire RopeWire rope is critical to dipper operation. P&H MinePro® Services stocks premium quality wire rope and provides expert inspection, installation and maintenance services to maximize its working life and reduce costly downtime.

Welding ExpertiseP&H is world renowned for its welding proficiency and strong welding training program. For field repair work such as dipper door rebuilds, wear liner installations and more, you can be confident with P&H MinePro welding services—just one of the reasons we say we’re your partners for life.

Sharing Our Dipper KnowledgeTo better understand the keys to improving dipper performance, P&H MinePro Services offers the 48-page publication, “Peak Performance Practices for Dippers.” Written for a broad audience, including mine managers, mechanics, operators, trainers and others, it discusses such topics as: Setting Up for Productive Digging; Operating Techniques; Ground Engaging Equipment; Maintenance; and more. P&H engineers, working with our customers and scientists from third-party testing facilities, duplicate mine pit conditions in miniature, with a sophisticated device that is calibrated to measure payload forces as new dipper design models are put through vigorous exercises; all without downtime effecting personnel or actual machine.

With scale modeling and meticulous calibration of specific individual mine site digging characteristics, P&H engineering teams explore a variety of design adaptations of selected dipper features—such as larger corner radii, alternative lip configurations, and sharper profile lip systems—as they develop the ideal configurations for real-life applications.

Close monitoring and measuring over hundreds of cycles assist researchers and designers in determining precisely if expectations had indeed been proven in the miniaturized but identical mining conditions.

From such results, further refinements are applied to the scale model dipper until the desired results are achieved, all without the significant cost of the typical trial and error approach of building a dipper and then seeing how well it performs.

In scale model testing, the effectiveness of refined dipper designs versus standard dippers is consistently demonstrated by overall efficiency gains achieved through a combination of increased payloads, reduced dig time and less dig energy required to move the dipper through the material.
