SKULPTURLANDSBY SELDE ACCESSIBILITYOBSOLETE FUNCTIONS

In January 2012 DR (Danish Broadcasting Coorporation) aired a feature on a number of villages in rural Denmark with a declining number of inhabitants. These places were showns with abandoned houses and a generally dull appearance.According to the program, these places are very expensive for the state in upkeep. So why not phase out the excistence of these places?One of the places featured was Selde in Salling, with a little more than 300 living there.This was a great reason for the Seldeners to actively take part in the life and activities of their village. A lot of new initiatives have started, and at least a 100 are actively involved in some kind of voluntary work.One of the greater initiatives is Skulpturlandsby Selde (Sculpture Village Selde). It started in 2013 and invites artists and architects to do the village in order to produce art pieces for the public space.

Based on an idea for transformation of abandoned buildings in the rural landscape, curator Marianne Jørgensen invited us to contribute with a piece of architecture.

As a result of the still growing industrial farms, less people are owning more land. Fields become bigger with the merging of smaller properties into larger ones, thus removing more and more paths and roads into the landscape.In most places, this causes the accessability to decrease and makes few roads, dominated by motorized traffic, the only way of transport.

We believe that a big part of living in a beautiful and attractive landscape is to actually have access to it.

As a result of the prevailing migration from rural areas to the bigger cities, many buildings and structures are left unused. This goes for both houses, production facilities and farming structures. For those living in areas dominated by emigration, these abandoned structures often carry connotations of their place as being neglected and unattractive.

Addressing these structures can be a method to reuse unwanted, yet available space in a way that changes the perception of the place.

After having scouted for candidating properties to work with, a local couple addressed us with an offer.Anne & Reinhard Federer are living on a former farm some 1.5 kilometers from Selde. They were willing to make parts of their land available for us to work at.

Most of the 3 hectares they own were used for horses. But as that is not a priority anymore, they would be happy to see a new use for the field.

The overall purpose of this assignment is to increase the accessability of the landscape around Jungetvej 33 by creating physical connections between the inhabited areas nearby.

Specifically the suggested plan focus on the 2 hectare meadow at Jungetvej 33 as a gathering point for the physical connections, with facilities to stay for shorter or longer periods.

This assignment is a proposal on how an obsolete field in a rural landscape can be transformed into a defined space that contains the dual quality of both guiding the visitor on his way through the local landscape and also facilitating stays of shorter or longer duration by encouraging curios explorations of the weather and changing seasons.

JUNGETVEJ 33

Ejendommen på Jungetvej 33 rummer et beboet stuehus, nogle ladebygninger og en maskinhal. Laderne er fra dengang stolper og båse til dyrene blev bygget af træ, og fodertrug blev støbt som en del af gulvet. Der er lavt til loftet og aflagte effekter hober sig langsomt op.Maskinhallen er en nyere tilføjelse bygget i beton og stål med ensartede flader og højt til loftet.

Ad den private fællesvej ankommer man til ejendommens vestlige side på en plads af perlesten omkranset af stuehuset i syd, samt lader og hal mod øst.

På den anden side af laderne og deres fnuldrende røde mursten strækker konkurrenceområdet sig mod øst. Gylletanken af blåligt stål skvulper over af mange års regnvand og rundt om den har ukrudtet haft fred til at myldre op af den fugtige jord.

Der hvor møddingen engang var, ligger der nu en sø og gemmer sig bag dunhammerne. Henover søen strækker et rustent transportbåndtil gødning sig, og bag gylletanken, umiddelbart syd for søen, ligger endnu en tank. Denne tank er firkantet og udført i beton. Totter af mos og klynger af alger har for længst gjort sit indtog, og større planter er ved at finde vej i kanter og i

sprækker.

Tankene, laderne og søen ligger tæt sammen i den vestlige del af opgaveområdet.Mod øst fortsætter den åbne eng cirka 330 meter i et omtrent 50 meter bredt bælte. Fra engen er der åbent mod markerne i nord. Mod syd mødes synet af et højt, levende hegn. I øst er beplantningen mindre tæt og man kan herigennem ane Nordsallings marker.
