About The OPS Performance

Each OPS meeting begins with a competition in the late afternoon. Results from the competition

are announced during the evening performance. The performance includes a feature length

presentation from the competition’s adjudicator which will be Will Nichols for October. The evening also

includes a “Local Hero” who is normally a student piper from the Portland area. OPS also invites local

pipe bands to do performance packages. Always by popular demand, the kitchen piping will again be

returning during the December meeting. Other highlights of the past have included highland dancing

and Irish uilleann piping.

Unfortunately, everyone has been very busy setting up the organization for the new session and

we have not yet found a band or local hero for the month of October. This info will be posted on our

website and facebook as soon as it is determined.

April Meeting Recap

The last meeting of last session went well with a stunning performance by guest performer

Donald Lindsay. James McKnight, drum sergeant for the Portland metro Youth Pipe Band, was the local

hero. The Portland Police Highland Guard put on a beautiful show package.

In addition to the Portland Highland Games Association scholarships handed out at OPS each

April, Oregon Pipers Society funds three scholarships of their own - two OPS Scholarships open to any

piper or drummer and the Thistle Glen Scholarship which is awarded to a piper who lives outside the

Portland Metro Area. Last year's recipients were:

OPS Scholarship Winners: Robbie Johnston and Ian Toohey

Thistle Glen Scholarship Winner: Charles Johnston

When you are writing your membership check, please consider adding a bit extra to help us

support our pipers and drummers as they improve their skills.

Introducing the Celtic Showcase

On Saturday,

North America, now Professional will play. Jocelyn

Case, former US Highland Dancing Champion will

Bruce Gandy Announced

for Annual Workshop

Every February, OPS holds a

workshop for pipers, which

replaces the competition for

that month. Our 2011

workshop will feature

instruction by award-winning

piper Bruce Gandy.

Competition Schedule for 2010-2011 Session Schedule: Detailed listing of events is shown in the chart below. There will be no competition in February because of the planned workshop.

Times: Chanter and Grade 5 – Check in 4:30. Competition 5:00. All other piping grades – Check in 5:00. Be prepared to play. All drumming grades – Check in 5:30. Be prepared to play.

You must check in at the competition desk at or before the check in time listed and be prepared to play at check‐in time if your steward requests you to do so.

Because we take field entries, we cannot predict the order of play in advance, so be prepared to play first. Order of play will follow reverse order entry (first to enter is last to play). It is recommended to use the mail‐in entry form for early registration.

All contestants are required to play in recognizable Highland attire except Chanter class.

Tune Requirements: All tunes for piping and drumming events are required to be 4 parts. Exceptions are all changer class and grade 5 piping events where 2 parts of a tune played twice is permitted. Also note specific requirements for certain grade 2 and 1 piping events indicated in the chart below.

Membership: If you live in Oregon or the Portland metro area, including Vancouver, WA, you need to be a member of OPS in order to compete.

Awards will be given during performance.
