In fiscal year 2010, OPRS achieved its highest level of operational results ever, as well as maintained a 93.23% Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) occupancy level on 2,972 available units. The first phase of Breckenridge Village at Grace Woods, a satellite campus of Breckenridge Village, was completed, adding 68 Brownstone apartment homes in two buildings. Also, major renovation to the Westminster Terrace building at Westminster-Thurber Community was finished, and work was continued on the aquatic therapy pool at Park Vista of Youngstown.

Senior Independence expanded by serving over 85,800 clients, and more than doubled its hospice volume. In October 2009, Senior Independence signed its first two ipartners, Kendal Northern Ohio and Wesminster Canterbury of Lynchburg, Virginia. Also, Senior Independence’s iCaregiver Guide won “Best of Show” in the National Mature Media Awards. The Central Ohio and Greater Cleveland Regions were named to the HomeCare Elite list, which recognizes the top 25% of the nation’s home health agencies.

The OPRS Foundation raised $6.8 million in total giving, and after a two-year decline, assets rebounded by more than $2.5 million. Thanks to donors’ generosity, outcomes from The Mission, The Vision, The Promise Capital Campaign continued to be seen, with four groundbreakings and one dedication taking place in fiscal year 2010. The Board of Directors also approved an endowment campaign for Breckenridge Village to begin in fiscal year 2011.

Ohio Presbyterian Retirement Services (OPRS) prides itself on being an organization that consistently aims to enhance the lives of our residents and clients, making sure we provide them with the best caring and quality services. This goal has been at the heart of the OPRS mission since our organization’s inception and has been a driving factor to continue building on our strengths.

In a year when the market and economy were once again questionable, OPRS demonstrated its strength in a number of different ways. Our CCRCs had higher occupancy rates than both the state and national averages, which drove our growth and development structurally and programmatically. Also, OPRS prepared for a restructuring of the company that was effective July 1, 2010. Through this change, Ohio Presbyterian Retirement Services became the official name of the parent company with three wholly owned subsidiary companies underneath: OPRS Communities, Senior Independence and Ohio Presbyterian Retirement Services Foundation.

Through our enhancements, expansions and restructuring, OPRS is able to offer quality services to more people and better serve older adults wherever they live. As we continue to build on our strengths and position ourselves for the future, we look forward to sharing our journey with you.

Since its founding in 1922, OPRS has worked hard to live out its mission of providing older adults with the best in caring and quality services. As a company, OPRS holds itself, and all those affiliated, accountable for their actions. That’s why OPRS has made it a priority to continue enhancing its ethics and compliance efforts, which help to promote education and the resolution of all compliance issues. The organization also maintains a culture of respect where detection and resolution are key behaviors to quality. The core belief is that if OPRS employees behave ethically while openly discussing ethical behaviors and expectations, shared beliefs will soon become shared practices. Through ethics and compliance efforts, OPRS is doing its part to remain a business with exceptional morals, thus upholding and expanding its high standards of care for future generations of residents and clients.

Another way in which OPRS is advancing is through its ardent dedication to social accountability, the community benefit it provides above and beyond the services that are paid for. Through OPRS’ efforts this past year, $13,569,950 was given back in total community benefit. The highlights and stories of OPRS’ social accountability can be found in a separate report, Doing the Right Thing, a companion piece to the OPRS annual report.

Ongoing Operational Improvement

Although fiscal year 2010 was a another difficult year for the economy and the long term care industry, OPRS generated very positive operating results from both of its operating divisions.

Fiscal year 2010 generated a $4,686,000 operational gain. The two operating components of Midwest Presbyterian Senior Service, the

CCRCs and Senior Independence’s community based services, combined to achieve the largest operating margin in OPRS’ recorded history! OPRS also continued to develop and execute new projects funded from a 2006 financing, as well as operate its facilities efficiently during a recessionary economy and ongoing real estate decline.

The 11 fully-operating retirement communities generated a $2,840,000 operating gain on net revenues of $134.8 million and Senior Independence generated an operating gain of $1,846,000 on net revenues of $36.4 million. We expect to continue to generate positive operational results during fiscal year 2011.

Although the CCRC corporate-wide census was below budget by 23.6 units (93.23% occupancy) as a result of the recessionary economy, the CCRCs were able to offset the majority of the revenue shortfall as a result of positive expense controls.

Community Based Services Operations – An actual operating gain of $1,846,000 and a favorable budget variance of $1,311,000 was the best year in Senior Independence’s history. The favorable budget variances were in the hospice program statewide and operating expense savings. Ranked Among the Top 25% of Home Health Providers in the Country – The Central Ohio and Greater Cleveland Regions were included in the HomeCare Elite, which names the top 25% of the nation’s home health agencies in the country. Agencies are named to the HomeCare Elite list based on performance measures in quality outcomes, quality improvement and financial performance.

Quality Counts – The Greater Cleveland and Akron/Canton Regions’ home health programs received perfect Ohio Department of Health Surveys. All Senior Independence home health agencies had a majority of clinical outcomes that were favorable to the State of Ohio average. We are pleased to affirm that 97% of home health clients and 100% of hospice family members would recommend Senior Independence to others.

Best in Show – The Mature Media Awards honor the best in advertising, marketing and education materials targeted to older adults. This year, the iCaregiver Guide won the Gold Award and was named the Best of Show at the 19th annual National Mature Media Awards. The iCaregiver Guide, along with Senior Independence’s website, www.icaregiver.org, provide information and resources for seniors and family caregivers.

iPartner Program Launched – In October 2009, Senior Independence signed its first two iPartners, Kendal Northern Ohio and Westminster Canterbury of Lynchburg, Virginia. Throughout the year, Senior Independence worked with

leaders at these organizations to prepare for home health Medicare certification. With Senior Independence’s support, both sites have established electronic medical records, home health policies and procedures, job descriptions, and home care services. The iPartner program was launched in 2009 as a way to expand home and community based services nationally through partnerships with not-for-profit retirement communities.

Make it Happen® Reaches Seniors Statewide – This year, Senior Independence’s Make it Happen® program reached clients in all regions across the state. Make it Happen® is a program that grants special wishes to older adults receiving Senior Independence services. This year, Make it Happen® events ranged from meeting the simple desire for a bubble bath or a trip to the beauty shop, to being able to provide a chance to go fishing or skiing again, to helping someone attend a granddaughters out of state wedding. Senior Independence staff, donors and volunteers work together to make it happen and make a difference.

Senior Impact Series – This year Senior Independence launched its first Senior Impact Series event in Columbus. Led by Executive Director Linda Artis, the “Successful Aging in Central Ohio” event featured Ohio Department of Aging Director Barbara Riley and Age Wave associate David Baxter. Following the speakers, the session attendees participated in guided conversations about what could enhance successful aging in Central Ohio.
