OPERATE YOUR SAW SAFELY• Do not operate with one hand. Seri-

ous injuryto the operator, helpers, orbystanders may resultfrom one-handed operation. A chain saw is in-tended for two-handed use.

• Operate the chain saw only in a_well-ventilated outdoorar#-a.

• Do not operate saw from a ladder orin a tree, unlessyou are specificallytrained to do so.

• Make sure the chain will not makecontact with any object while startingthe engine. Never try to start the sawwhen the guide bar is in a cut.

• Do not put pressure on the saw, es-pecially at the end of the cut. Doingso can cause you to lose controlwhen the cut is completed.

• Stop engine before setting saw down.• Hand carry saw only when engine is

stopped. Carry with muffler away frombody; guide bar & chain projecting be-hind you; guide bar preferably cov-ered with a scabbard.

MAINTAIN YOUR SAW IN GOODWORKING ORDER• Have all chain saw service performed

by a qualified service dealer exceptthe items listed in the maintenancesection of this manual.

• Make certain the saw chain stopsmoving when the throttle trigger is re-leased. For correction, refer to "Car-buretor Adjustments."

• Keep the handles dry, clean, and freefrom oil or fuel mixture.

• Keep caps and fasteners securelytightened.

• Use only Craftsman accsssories andreplacement parts as recommended.Never modify your saw.

HANDLE FUEL WITH CAUTION

• Do not smoke while ha-ndlihg fuel orwhile operating the saw.

• Eliminate all sources of spmks or flamein aress where fuel is mixed or poured.

• Mix and pour fuel in an outdoor areaand use an approved, marked con-tainer for all fuel purposes. Wipe upall fuel spills before starting saw.

• Move at least 10 feet (3 meters) fromfueling site before starting.

•Tum the engine off and let saw cool ina non=combustible area, not on dryleauas;-straw, paper, etc. Slowly re-move fuel cap and refuel unit.

• Store the unit and fuel in a cool, drywell ventilatedspace where fuel va-porscannot reach sparks or openflames from water heaters, aiectricmotorsor switches, furnaces, etc.

GUARD AGAINST KICKBACK

Followall safety rules to help avoidkickbackand other forces which canresult in serious injury.

% _ Kickback Path

Avoid Obstructions

Clear The WorkingArea

WARNING: Rotational Kickback canoccur when the moving chain contactsan object at the upper portion of the tipof the guide bar. Contact at the upperportion of the, tip of the guide bar cancause the chain to dig into the object, which stops the chain for an instant. Theresult is a lightning fast, reverse reactionwhich kicks the guide bar up and backtoward the operator.Pinch-Kickback and Pull-In occur whenthe chain is suddenly stopped by beingpinched, caught, or by contacting a for-eign object in the wood. This suddenstopping of the chain results in a rever-sal of the chain force used to cut woodand causes the saw to move in the op-posite direction of the chain rotation.Pinch-Kickback drives the saw straightback toward the operator. Pull-In pullsthe saw away from the operator.

REDUCE THE CHANCE OFKICKBACK

• Recognize that Idctd0a_ can h..appen..W'_ a basic understanding of kickback, you can reduce the element of suqxisewhich contributes to accidents.

• Never let the moving chain contact

• any object at the tip of the guide bar.Keep working area free from obstruc-tions such as other trees, branches, rocks, fences, stumps, etc. Eliminateor avoid any obstruction that your saw

° chain could hit while cutting.Keep saw chain sharp and propedytensioned. A loose or dull chain can

speed. If the chain is moving at aslowerspeed, there is greater chanceof kickback occurring.Use extreme caution when reenteringa cut.

i Do not attempt cuts startingwith thetip of the bar Iplunge cuts).Watch for shifting logs or other forcesthat couldclose a cot and pinch or fallinto chain.

• Use the specified Reduced-KickbackGuide Bar and Low-Kickback Chain.

Avoid Pinch-Kickback:• Be extremely aware of situations or

obstructions that can cause matedaito pinch the top of or otherwise stopthe chain.

• Do not cut more than one log at atime.

• Do not twist saw as bar is withdrawnfrom an undercut when bucking.

Avoid Pull-In:

i lways begin cutting with the engineat ful/speed and the saw housingagainst wood.Use wedges made of plastic or wood.Never use metal to hold the cut open.

keep y.our body from being in a directI,ne with.the cutting chain.

• Stand with your weight evenly bal-anced onboth feet.

• Do not overreach. You couldbe drawnor thrown off balance and lose control.

• Do not cut above shoulder height. It isdifficultto maintain control of sawabove shoulder height.

KICKBACK SAFETY FEATURES

WARNING: The following features areincludedon your saw to help reducehazard of kickback; however, such fea-turse will not totally eliminate thisdan-ger. Do not rely only on safety devices.• Handguard: designed to reduce the

chance of your left hand contactingthe chain if your hand slips off thefront handlebar.

• Position of front and rear handlebars:designed with distance between han-dles and "in-line" with each other. Thespreed and =in-line" position of thehands provided by this design worktogether to give balance and res,s-tance in controlling the pivot of thesaw back toward the operator if kick-back occurs,.

• Reduced-Kickback Guide Bar: de-signed with a Small radius tip whichreduces the size of the kickback dan-dgerzone. This type bar has been

emonstrated to significantly reducethe number and seriousness of kick-backs when tested in accordance withANSI B175.1.

GUIDE BAR AND CHAIN OIL

The chain oiler provides continuouslu-bricaUonto the chain and guide bar. Besure to fill the bar oil tank when you fillthe fuel tank (Capacity = 6.8 ft. oz.).For maximum guide bar and chain life,we recommend you use Craftsmanchain saw bar oil. If Craftsman bar 0il Isnot available, you may use a goodgrade SAE 30 oil untilyou are .abletoobtain Craftsman brand. The oiloutputis automatically metered during opera-tion. Your saw will use approximatelyone tank of bar oil for every tank of fuelmix. Always fill the bar oil tank whenyou fill the fuel tank.

FUELING ENGINEThis engine is cedified to operate onunleaded gasoline. Before operation, gasoline must be mixed with a goodquality 2-cycle air-cooled engine oil. Werecommend Craftsman brand oil. Mixgasoline and oil at a ratioof 40:1 (A40:1 ratio is obtained by mixing 3.2ounces of oilwith I gallon of unleadedgasoline). DO NOT USE automotive oilor boat oil. These oils will cause enginedamage. When mixingfuel follow theinstructionsprinted on the container.Once oil is added to the gasoline, shake container momentarily to assurethaf the_uel is thoroughly mixed.Always read and followthe safety rulesrelatingto fuel before f0elir_g your unit.

IMPORTANTExperienceindicatesthat alcoholblendedfuels (calledgasoholor usingethanolormethanol)can attractmoisturewhichleads to separationand formationofacidsduringstorage.Acidicgas candamage the fuel system of an enginewhilein storage. To avoidengine problems, the fuel sys-tam shouldbe emptiedbefore storage for30 deps'6r longer.Drain the gas tank, stad the engine and let it run untilthe fuel

• Stop engine beforesettingsaw down.TREE FELUNG TECHNIQUESWARNING: Check for broken or deadbranches which can fall while cuttingcausingsadous injury.Do not cut nearbuildingsor electdcal wires if you do notknow the directionof tree fall, nor cut atnight since you will not be able to seewell, nor dudng bad weather such asrain, snow, or strongwinds, etc.• Carefully plan your sawing operation

in advance.• Clear the work area. You need a clear

area all around the tree so you canhave secure footing.

• Study the natural conditionsthat cancause the tree to fall in a padlculardirection. These conditions include:

: The wind directionand speed. The lean of the tree. The lean of atree might not be apparent due touneven or sloping terrain. Use a

• Look for decay and rot. If the trunk isrotted, it can snap and fall toward theoperator.

* Make sure there is enough i'oom=forthe tree to fall. Maintain a distance of

2-1/2 tree lengths from the nearestperson or other objects. Engine noisecan drown out a warning call.

• Remove dirt, stones, loose bark, nails, staples, and wire from the treewhere cuts are to be made.

FELLING LARGE TREES(6 inches in diameter or larger)The notch method is used to fell largetrees. A notch is cut on the side of thetree in the desired direction of fall. Aftera felling cut is made on the oppositeside of tree, the tree will tend to fall inthe direction of the notch.

NOTE: If tree has large buttress roots, remove them before making the notch.NOTCH CUT AND FELLING TREE• Make notch cut by cutting the top of

the notch first. Cut through 1/3 of thediameter of the tree. Next completethe notch by cutting the bottom. Seeillustration. Once the notch is cut, re-move the wedge of wood from tree.

• After removing the wood, make thefelling cut on the opposite side of thenotch. This is done by making a cutabout two inches higher than the can-tor ofthe notch. This will leaveenOtl_h-uncut wood between the fell-ing cut and the notch to form a hinge.

This hinge will help prevent the treefrom falling in the wrong direction.

Hinge holds tree onstump and helpscontrolfall

Opening offellingcut

NOTE: Before felling cut i.scomplete, use wedges to open the cut whennecessary to control the direction of fall.To avoid Idckback and chain damage, use wood or plastic wedges, but neversteel or iron wedges.• Be alert to signs that the tree is ready

to fall: cracking sounds, widening ofthe felling cut, or movement in the up-per branches.

• As tree starts to fall, stop saw, put itdown, and get away quickly on yourplanned retreat path.

• Be extremely cautious with partiallyfallen trees that may be poorly sup-ported. When a tree doesn't fall com-pletely, setthe saw aside and pulldown the tree With a cable winch, block and tackle, or tractor. Do notuse your saw to cut down a partiallyfallen tree.

CUTTING A FALLEN TREE(BUCKING)Bucking is the term used for cutting afallen tree to the desired 10gsize.

WARNING: Do not stand on the logbeing cut. Any portion can roll causingloss of footing and control. Do not standdownhill of the log being cut.IMPORTANT POINTS• Cut only one log at a time.• Cut shattered wood very carefully,

sharp pieces of wood could be flungtoward operator.

• Use a sawhorse to cut small logs.Never allow another person to holdthe log while cutting and never holdthe log with your leg or foot.

• Do not cut in an area where logs, limbs, and roots are tangled. Drag logsinto a dear area before cutling them.

BUCKING TECHNIQUES

WARNING: If saw becomes pinchedor hung in a log, don't try to force it out.You can lose control of the saw result-ing in injury and/or damage to the saw.Stop the saw, ddve a wedge of plastic

CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT

WARNING: The chain will be movingduring most of this procedure. Wearyour protective equipment and observeall safety precautions. During the Iowispeed mixture adjustment recheck idlespeed after each tum of the screw. Thechain must not move at idle speed.

Carburetor adjustment is cdtical and ifdone improperly can permanently dam-age the engine as well as the carbure-tor. If you require further assistance oYare unsure about performing this proce-dure, call our customer assistance helpline at 1-800-235-5878.

Old fuel, a dirty air filter, dirty fuel fiitei',or flooding may give the impression Ofan improperly adjusted carburetor.Check these conditions before adjust_ing the carburetor.

The carburetor has been carefully set atthe factory. Adjustments may be neces-sary if you notice any of the followingconditions:• Chain moves at idle. See =Idle Speed"

under adjusting procedure.• Saw will not idle. See "idle Speed" ;

and =Low Speed Mixture"under ad-justing procedure.

• Engine dies or hesitates when itshould accelerate. See "AccelerationCheck" under adjusting procedure.

• Loss of cutting power. See UHighSpeed Mixture H" under adjustingprocedure.

There are three adjustment screws onthe carburetor. They are-lab61ed H, L,and T. They are located in the area justabove the primer bulb.

CARBURETOR PRESETSWhen making adjustments, do not forcethe plastic limiter caps beyond thestops or damage will occur. If carburetor presets are not needed, proceed to =idle Speed-T."• Turn both mixture screws counter-

clockwise until they stop.• Turnthe idle speed screw clockwise

unt11"Rstops. Now tum counterclock-wise 4-1/2 full turns.

Start motor, let it run for 3 minutes, andproceed t_>the adjustment section. Ifengine does not start, refer to trouble-shooting chart or call 1-800-235-5878.If engine performance is acceptable atthe preset positions and there is nochain movement at idle, no further ad-justment is necessary.

ADJUSTING PROCEDURE

Idle Speed-TAllow engine to idle. Adjust speed untilengine runs without chain movement orstalling.• Tum clockwise to increase engine

speed if engine stalls or dies.• Turn counterclockwise to decrease

speed. No further adjustments are necessary ifchain does not move at idle speed andif performance is satisfactory.

Low Speed Mixture-LAllow engine to idle. Then acceleratethe engine and note performance. If en-gine hesitates, bogs down, or smokesduring acceleration, tum mixture screwclockwise in 1/16-tUrn increments untilperformance.i_ satisfactory. Repeat thisprocedure as ne_cessary for proper ad-justment. After completing adjustments, check for acceleration and chain move-ment at idle. Reset if necessary.

High Speed Mixtura-HDO NOT operate engine at full throttlefor prolonged periods while making ad-justments. Damage to the engine canoccur. Make a test cut. Based on per-formance of the saw while cutting, ad-just the high speed mixture setting in1/16-tum increments as follows:• _ untilsaw has good power in

the cut with no hesitation. Do not adjustby scund or speed, but judge by howweU the saw performs in the cut.

• Countemlcckwisa if the saw hasspeed, but dies in the cut or lackspower in the cut.

After completing adjustments, check foracceleration and chain movement atidle. Reset if necessary.Acceleration CheckIf the engine dies or hesitates instead ofaccelerat_g, tum the low speed mixtureadjustment counteml_ until youhave smooth acceleration with no chainmovement at idle. Recheck and adjust asnecessary for acceptableperformance.
