WIL-RICH OPERATOR'S MANUAL 74292 11/07 14

The main frame depth on the WIL-RICH XL2

field cultivator is controlled by a pair of 12.6”stroke bypass cylinders. These cylinders are lo-cated at the rear of the unit, above the main framelift axles. The cylinders are tied to the main axleand to the main axle mast. The main axle mast isnonadjustable and pinned to the front of the mainframe through the main axle tie tube. See Fig 1.

The main frame depth is mechanically set by turn-ing the screw collar “DOWN” the cylinder rod todecrease the working depth or “UP” the cylinderrod to increase the working depth. An add-on stopcollar is provided for situations where the screwstop collar does not allow a shallow enough set-ting.

NOTE: Proper field operation is dependentupon the screw collars of the main framelift cylinders being first to contact themechanical stops. If a wing cylinder screwstop collars contacts first the levelingfunction of the system will not operatecorrectly.

NOTE: The cylinder screw stop collars onthe main frame depth control cylindersmust be set equally – failure to do so cantwist the main axle and cause axle fail-ure. Measure the collar locations or countthe number of turns each screw collar isrotated to ensure they are set the same.

The top bypass cylinders have adjustable me-chanical screw collars. These screw collarsare rotated on the cylinder rod to vary the re-tracted length of the cylinder, providing themeans to adjust the working depth of the unit.

The operational depth of the wing is controlledby use of a 10.8” stroke slave cylinder locatedabove the wing axle. These cylinders are con-nected in series with the main frame lift cylin-ders. The cylinders are attached to the wing axlemast, through the wing axle tie tube and to thefront of the wing. See Fig. 2.

NOTE: The screw collars and stop collarsare used to set the depth of the wing. Ad-justments to level the wing relative to themain frame are made at the front of theunit.

By adjustment of the wing adjust bolt the wingcan be adjusted to the main frame. To set the wingaxle, the wing adjust rod is made shorter or longer.Lengthening the adjustment rod (counter clock-wise rotation as viewed from the front of the ma-chine) will lower the wing and adjusting the rod(clockwise rotation as viewed from the rear of themachine) to a shorter position will raise the wing.To maintain the front to rear level of the wing thefront gage wheel will also need to be adjusted.Refer to the preliminary and field settings for ad-ditional setting information.

LEVELING

The operational leveling of the field cultivatormust be done in a level area of the field. Finalfront to rear and side to side leveling is done atworking depth. Preliminary setting can be com-pleted in the yard to speed up the field settingoperation.

The front to rear level of the main frame is con-trolled by the main axle lift wheels and the set-ting of the main hitch. The front to rear level ofthe wing is controlled by the wing axle lift wheelsand the hydraulic front gage wheel. Both the mainframe and the wings will need to be adjusted cor-rectly for proper operation.

PRELIMINARY SETTINGS

Proper preliminary and field settings will requireuse of a measuring device. Once the unit has beenproperly assembled and hitched to the tractor thatwill be used for field operation, make certain thehydraulic system has been properly charged. Po-sition the unit on a level area of ground and un-fold the wings, checking to ensure there are nopeople or obstructions in the path of the wings.

NOTE: Cycle the main lift hydraulics anumber of times to remove air in the sys-tem. Holding the hydraulic lever in the“RAISE” position will remove the un-wanted air from the circuit.

Lower the unit to the ground so that the front rowof shanks on the main frame are 1”-2” above theground.Measure the main frame height from the groundto the top of the outer frame tube and compare tothe distance measured from the ground to the topof this outer frame tube at the rear of the machine.See fig 4.

The depth control cylinders are hooked in se-ries. Each cylinder is a top bypass cylinderand when fully extended will pass oil by the pis-ton into the next cylinder charging the system.Top bypass cylinders will bypass oil when thecylinder is fully extended. This bypass conditionwill exist when the implement is raised to maxi-mum ground clearance. At this time oil will passthrough a 1/16" dia hole and go on to the nextcylinder. See Fig. 3.Note: This system requires periodic rais-ing of the unit and holding of the tractorvalve to expel air or contaminants.

If the front dimension is larger (front of frame ishigher than the rear) you will need to adjust thehitch adjust tube to drop the front of the unit.Loosen the locking nut and turn the adjust tube toshorten the overall tube length. Re-measure thefront and rear dimension and adjust the hitch ad-just tube as required to maintain a front to rearlevel main frame. Once the frame is level front torear, tighten the lock nut on the hitch adjust tube.Note: the adjustment tube may need to be read-justed in the field.

If the front dimension is less (front of frame islower than the rear) you will need to lengthen thehitch adjust tube and adjust as required.

NOTE: If the hitch adjust tube is difficultto turn, lower the unit to the ground toremove the weight from the adjust tube.

Once the main frame is level front to rear, cyclethe main lift hydraulics and lower the unit to theground. Measure the frame height at the rear cor-ner of the main frame and at the rear corner of thewing. If the rear of the wing is low, loosen thelock nut on the wing adjust rod at the front of thewing (See Fig. 2) By turning the adjust rod intothe wing axle tie tube you will raise the rear ofthe unit. Conversely if the rear of the unit is highyou will need to turn the adjust rod out (counter-clockwise) to drop the rear corner of the wing. When the rear corner of the wing is at the sameheight the wing the adjustment rod lock nut canbe tightened securely.

Repeat the above procedure for the opposite wing.Note: the adjustment tube may need to be read-justed in the field.

WIL-RICH OPERATOR'S MANUAL 74292 11/07 18

The XL2 field cultivator is equipped with a hy-draulically controlled front gage wheel on eachwing. This gage wheel provides support to thewing while transporting the unit with the wingslowered and maintains the level of the front ofthe wing while working. When adjusting the levelof the wing to the main frame this wheel shouldbe set also. Once the rear of the wing has beenset to match the main frame loosen the adjust-ment nuts on the lower link arm. By adjustingthese nuts the gage wheel can be raised or low-ered and will adjust the front corner of the wing.Measure to ensure that the front of the wing islevel with the rear as shown in fig. 5.

On smaller wings when adjusting in the yard theremay be sufficient rigidity in the wing for eitherthe rear axle or the front gage wheel to carry thecomplete wing. For example – if you have at-tempted to adjust the rear axle down to level thewing with the main frame and the wing does notseem to drop, check to see if the front gage wheelis holding the wing up. Once properly adjustedthe front gage wheel will raise and lower the wingin sequence with the rear axle movement.

The gage wheel contains a braking feature thatmay need periodic adjustment. Refer to Fig 5. Thisbrake is to maintain control of the rotation of thegage wheels. As the unit is operating the loadingon this gage wheel will vary as conditions change. While operating observe the gage wheel – if ittends to rotate rapidly back and forth (oscillate)the brake may need to be tightened. This will placea slight drag on the rotation of the gage wheeland stabilize the wheel.

Note: Only tighten the brake pad suffi-ciently to dampen rotation, do not overtighten and restrict rotation. If the wheeltends to push while turning the brake maybe to tight. Loosen the adjustment bolts.

WIL-RICH OPERATOR'S MANUAL 74292 11/0719

FIELD SETTINGSOnce the preliminary settings have been made inthe yard there should be minimal field adjustmentsrequired once the unit is taken to the field. It shouldnot be assumed that since the unit is level in theyard it will be level in the field. Variations inground conditions and loading will impact thefunctioning and setting of the unit. All final ad-justments should be made in the field.

Move to the field, unfold the wings and removethe transport channel locks front the main lift cyl-inders. Turn all screw collars on the main and winglift cylinders up to the clevis end of the cylinderrod. Cycle the hydraulics a number of times toclear out any trapped air. Lower the cultivator intothe ground and move forward for a short distance.Stop and check the depth of the shanks at the frontand rear of the main frame.

By use of the screw stops and stop collars pro-vided, set the main frame rear axle cylinders inposition at the desired operating depth. Set thescrew collars the same on both main frame liftcylinders. Check the depth of the front shanks witha tape measure or a yardstick. Adjust the frontrelative to the rear as required by adjusting thefront hitch tube. (See Fig 4) Once the front andrear depth is close, raise the unit out of the ground, cycle the hydraulics and drop unit into the groundwhile moving forward. After moving a short dis-tance recheck the front to rear level of the unit.Adjust either the screw collars on the lift cylin-ders or the front hitch tube to refine the depth set-tings.Once the main frame is operating level at the de-sired depth move to the wings. While the unit isstopped in the field at operating depth, check theoperating depth of the shanks at the front and rearof the wing. If the wing requires adjustment loosenthe jam nut securing the wing adjust rod at thefront of the wing (See Fig 2). By rotating the wingadjust rod as noted in the Preliminary Settings youcan set the operational depth of the wing. Set eachwing as required and secure the lock nut to thewing adjustment rod. Follow the same processwhile adjusting the other wing.

After the wings have been properly adjusted cyclethe hydraulics and lower the unit into the grounduntil the screw collars of the main lift cylinder’scontact the cylinder end plates. Move to the wingand turn the screw stop collars on the wing cylin-ders down until they contact the end plates. Turnthe screw collars one-half turn away from the endplates. Cycle the hydraulics and check to ensurethat the main frame cylinders are fully retractedand that the wing cylinders are not bottoming outfirst.

If the front gage wheels on the wings were setproperly during the preliminary setting procedurethere may be no additional adjustment required. It should be noted that the normal loading on afield cultivator would tend to rotate the framedown at the front of the machine. The extent ofthis frame rotation is related to the depth of op-eration, soil conditions, rear attachments and op-erating speed. This main frame rotation load iscarried through the main hitch and to the tractor. The rotation of the wings is controlled by the con-nection through the wing hinges to the main frameand by the front hydraulic gage wheels. On unitswith smaller wings a significant part of the rota-tion will be carried by the main frame hitch. Onlarger winged units the setting of the front gagewheel is more critical.

Adjust the front wing gage wheels to carry thewing in a level attitude (See Fig. 5). Loading onthe front gage wheels and main carrying wheelsshould be about equal while operating. The bestway to determine loading is to operate the unit atthe desired depth and speed and observe the func-tioning. If the wings seem to be carrying the frontgage wheel or appears that these wheels are notsinking into the ground you may need to lowerthe front gage wheels. If the front gage wheelsalways seem to be pushing into the ground youmay be carrying to much wing weight. Adjust thegage wheels to carry less weight.

Once the unit is adjusted level, operate the unitfor a period of time and watch the operation. Re-adjust as required and securely tighten any adjust-ment rods or locking nuts.

Wil-Rich field cultivators are also available withtwin spring shank assemblies. The twin springshank assemblies are recommended forheavy duty use.Note: Be sure to maintain adequate tire/shovel clearance on shanks located in oraround the wheel well when machine isfully raised or lowered.

MAINTENANCEPeriodic checks must be made to assure that allnuts and bolts remain securely tightened. Loosehardware is easily bent or lost and can cause ex-cessive wear on parts. Replace any bent or bro-ken bolts as soon as they are discovered.Clean off any dirt or grease that may accumulateon moving parts at regular intervals. This willprevent any abrasive action which could causeexcess or premature wear. Thoroughly inspectthe implement for loose or broken parts and ad-just or replace as necessary. It is important that the implement be regularlylubricated as recommended to obtain the mostefficient operation. Proper lubrication helps pre-vent down time due to excessive wear and increasemachine life.

CYLINDER SHAFTSIf the cylinder shafts are left exposed for any ex-tended period of time, they should be coated withgrease to protect them from rust and corrosion.

AXLE CAPSAll axle caps must be greased once a day with agood quality grease. Lower machine onto theshovel points to relieve pressure on the capswhich will make greasing easier.

HUB AND SPINDLE ASSEMBLIESEach hub and spindle assembly comes with agrease fitting installed in the hub. These must begreased once a week during steady usage. Cau-tion - do not over greaseClean and repack hub and spindle bearings onceeach season.Tighten spindle nut so that there is a slight dragon the wheel when turned by hand.

WALKING TANDEM ASSEMBLIESPeriodically check each walking tandem assem-bly for looseness and tighten spindle nut if thebearings show any evidence of side play.Clean and repack walking tandem assembliesonce each season. The spindle nut should be tightened to allow aheavy drag when assembly is rotated by hand.

HYDRAULICSInspect all hydraulic hoses and fittings for cracksand abrasion at least once a year. Tighten or re-place as needed. When connecting the hoses to the cylinders, tub-ing, or fittings; always use one wrench to pre-vent the hose from twisting and another wrenchto tighten the union. Excessive twisting willshorten the hose life.Do not overtighten hydraulic fittings, excessivetorque may cause them to crack.Care must be taken to prevent twisting whentightening hose connections. Straighten any hosethat appears twisted immediately. A twisted hosecan burst under operating pressure.

STORAGENote: if possible store your cultivator in-side.At the end of a season, clean the implement thor-oughly to remove any trash, soil or dirty greasewhich could hold moisture and cause prematurerusting. Repaint any chipped, bare, or rusted ar-eas to prevent any further deterioration. Inspectthe machine for any worn or broken parts andadjust or replace as required.See your Wil-Rich dealer for any parts and/orservice which may be needed.Thoroughly lubricate all grease fittings at the endof the season's use and again before the first op-eration of the next season. It is advisable, if possible to store larger fieldcultivators with the wings down. With the wingscompletely lowered, the rod end cylinder pins ofthe wing lift cylinders should be removed andcylinders carefully retracted.Avoid possible damage to the hydraulic systemby lowering the machine onto the shanks and re-lieve the pressure on the system. Doing this willalso prevent damage to the tires by removing thefield cultivator's weight.Coat the shovels with grease and place boardsunder the points to prevent the shovels from set-tling into the ground.
