1. About this Manual
This manual describes the assembly and dismantling of the Non-Magnetic Cart. It should be read in conjunction with the Non-Magnetic Cart product brochure (DS3142) which can be found found on the product page of the Bartington Instruments at: www.bartington.com.
All components of the Non-Magnetic Cart are shown in numbered diagrams. A number in square brackets in the text refers to the item number of that component according to these diagrams. Diagrams are for illustrative purposes only.
Note: As well as numbers, some items are also identified with a letter. In these cases, that letter is physically marked on the items supplied to the customer.

2. Safe Use
WARNING: The greater part of this product consists of an assembly of carbon fibre tubes. Damaged carbon fibre tubes may splinter. Always use gloves if handling damaged carbon fibre tubes.
WARNING: Carbon fibre dust may cause severe irritation to mucous membranes, eyes and skin. Avoid drilling, machining, filing or any other operations that may cause the formation of dust particles.

WARNING: Carbon fibre is semi conductive. Avoid sources of high voltage electricity.
Caution: Do not overload the cart beyond the limits specified in the product brochure.
Caution: Do not exceed maximum speed specified in the product brochure under any conditions. Adjust speed as appropriate for the terrain and the weight of instrumentation on the cart. It is the operator’s responsibility to select a speed and suspension setting that is appropriate for these conditions. See Section 7: Suspension Upright Spring Assembly.
3. Introduction to the Non-Magnetic Cart
The lightweight, carbon fibre Non-Magnetic Cart is designed to carry an array of Grad-13 or Grad-01 sensors over a search area, tracking data by GPS and logging it on an on-board computer.
The cart is constructed by OXP Ltd and available exclusively through Bartington Instruments. It can be operated manually by either pushing or pulling, whichever the operator finds most practical/comfortable. It can also be configured for towing by a small vehicle.
4. Direction of Travel
Direction of travel depends on the cart’s configuration.
Caution: The wheel track and suspension must always be configured to trail the cart’s direction of travel. Failure to ensure correct assembly may result in serious damage to your purchase. See Section 8.4: Wheel Assembly for further details.
Caution: The cart must not be pushed by a vehicle.
Note: The manoeuvering and handling characteristics of the cart will change depending on the number of instruments and their relative weight distribution.

5. What’s in the Box
The following items are supplied as standard with any order of the Non-Magnetic Cart. Check that each piece shown here can be identified in what has been supplied. Contact Bartington Instruments if any appear to be missing.
Note: The full range of items supplied may vary depending on the customer’s specification at time of order.
Note: Keep all clamps, tubes, screws and fittings clean.
Note: As the direction of the cart changes depending on whether it is to be pushed / pulled or towed, the terms ‘left’ and ‘right’ are interchangeable. For the purposes of this manual, ‘left’ and ‘right’ are used from the point of view of a user observing the cart from the sensor bar end.
5.1. 10mm AF tool
This single tool is used to operate all locks and catches.

6. Clamps and Screws
Clamps are tightened or jacked (spread) by dual function clamping and jacking screws. These perform one or the other function depending on the direction they are turned. Tightening the clamp automatically releases jacking pressure, and vice versa.

Caution: Do not drop clamps onto hard surfaces or strike with hard-faced objects as they may shatter.
Note: Top clamps and suspension upright clamps are specific to left and right, and are not interchangeable.
Note: Clamps will become more rigid and brittle in temperatures near or below zero. In warmer temperatures they will become more flexible.
Note: In cold weather, the front knuckle clamp can be greased, along with D and E tube ends.
6.2. Clamp Operation
Note: Clamps are fitted with security screws that engage holes in the tube ends. This gives extra safeguard against tube pull-out. This is particularly important on rough ground or when cart is being towed.
6.2.1. Assembly
1. Loosen security screws (if used) so that they are just clear of clamp bores.
2. Jack clamps apart with the clamping/jacking screw, just enough to insert or remove the tubes.
3. Line up tubes to match the angle of the clamp bore and slide into place.
4. To close clamp, tighten screws ¼ turn at a time, alternating from screw to screw, to finger tightness using socket tool provided.
Caution: Do not overtighten.
5. Tubes should be clamped just enough not to move.
6.2.2. Dismantling
6. Loosen each clamp with ¼ turns anti-clockwise, working around all screws.
Caution: Take care only to jack clamps apart sufficiently to release clamping pressure on tubes. Overjacking will damage clamps.
7. If security screws are used, loosen them sufficiently to clear holes before pulling the tubes out.
Note: For rapid deployment next time the cart is used, the operator may choose to leave sections of the cart pre-assembled, e.g.:
• data logger / battery bracket / H tube / I tube

6.3. Screws Overview
Turn screws clockwise to grip tubes and prevent them becoming detached from their correct position.
Turn screws anticlockwise to jack or spread the clamps, to allow tubes to be inserted or removed.
Caution: Lightly tighten screws on clamps using only the socket tool provided.
Caution: Do not overtighten screws or overjack clamps.
Caution: Check screw tightness regularly during fieldwork, particularly where the cart is subjected to vibration.
Caution: In push/pull configuration, security screws may be used at the operator’s discretion. Security screws should always be used in towing configuration.
Note: Clamping/jacking screw heads and security screw heads should always face outwards from the cart.
Note: When assembling the cart, the last operation is a final tightening of all clamping screws.

7. Suspension Upright Spring Assembly
7.1. Suspension Overview
The suspension assembly is supplied pre-assembled but can be dismantled to replace leaf springs.

Caution: Your suspension has been rated for the number of sensors originally specified at time of order. If you wish to vary the number of sensors, contact Bartington Instruments for advice on whether you need to adjust the spring leaves.
Caution: Always check the suspension for stress before and after operation of the cart. Stress is shown by delamination on the spring leaves. Replace if stress is evident. These checks are especially important if towing over rough terrain.
7.2. Suspension Assembly Instructions
Springs come pre-assembled and consist of three types of leaf springs of different lengths, held together by clamping plates. Customers can dismantle and re-assemble them with leaf springs of different thickness.
After replacing springs, reset the leaf springs by tightening the screws, washers and lock nuts to finger tightness.
Note: The clamping plates must only apply friction, not a clamping force.
Note: If towing, and/or if more than 6 sensors are utilised, suspension can be made harder by replacing the leaf springs with thicker leaves. This can be done incrementally by replacing individual layers. Contact Bartington Instruments for further information.
Caution: Swing arms and springs must always trail the direction the cart is travelling. Hence their configuration depends on whether the cart is being pushed or pulled/towed. See Section 8.4: Wheel Assembly for details.

8.2. Push/Pull Cart Frame Assembly Instructions
8.2.1. Assembly of Cart Frame
Step 1. Slide axle clamp [7] to midpoint of axle tube A. Loosely tighten clamp to hold in place.
Step 2. Push suspension uprights onto either end of axle tube A.
Step 3. Push B tubes into suspension uprights [1].
Line up the security screws with the holes in the tubes and tighten just enough to locate the screws into the holes.

Step 4. Fit crossbar tube C to top clamps [2].
Push crossbar C down onto B tubes.
Fit security screws and tighten loosely.

Step 5. Insert D tubes into suspension uprights.
Rotate tubes to locate security screws with holes and tighten loosely.
Step 6. Insert E tubes into top clamps at either end of crossbar.
Rotate tubes to locate security screws with holes and tighten loosely.
Loosen front knuckle clamp centre screw [30] fully.
Insert E and D tube ends into front knuckle clamp [11], with ‘T’ marking uppermost.
Ensure ends of tubes are fully seated.
Fit front knuckle clamp security screws [29] and tighten loosely.
Tighten up centre screw [30].
Step 7. Push both F and G tubes into sensor bar clamps [3].
Tighten security screws.
Step 8. Push G tubes into suspension upright clamps [1].
Push F tubes into top clamps [2].
Loosely tighten security screws.

Insert handle platform [12] into front knuckle clamp [11] and tighten.
Caution: The stand attached to the platform [12] is not a kick stand and should be unfolded gently until fully opened.
Tighten screws of all clamps from step 1 in succession, tightening screws no more than ¼ turns at a time, alternating from screw to screw.
Note: clamp tightening screws for suspension uprights are located on base of suspension uprights.

Step 9. Fit battery/data logger bracket to H tube.
Step 10. Push I tube into instrument junction clamp [9d].
Tighten security screw loosely.
Push I tube into axle tube clamp [7].
Tighten security screw loosely.
Push H tube into crossbar tube clamp [7].
Connect reinforcing spar [18a] to bottom of GPS clamp and left hand top clamp.
Tighten all screws.
8.4. Wheel Assembly

The wheel assembly is supplied as a complete unit.

Note: Washer is not secured and care should be taken that it does not slide off its spindle when not attached to the cart.

8.4.2. Wheel Assembly Instructions
Step 11. Insert suspension arm [8b] into axle through suspension upright, with leaf spring resting on top of hub spindle.
Turn security catch [8a] to secure suspension spring.
Caution: Swing arms and springs should always trail direction of travel, whether cart is being pushed, pulled or towed.
To reverse direction, remove suspension upright clamp [1b] (see Section 7.1: Suspension Overview). Remove leaf spring assembly from suspension upright. Replace facing in opposite direction. Fasten suspension upright clamp and reattach wheel as described above.

Step 12. Push L tubes into sensor bar coupling [5]. Tighten coupling over join.
With the sensor bar complete, plan where the sensors will be fitted. For any sensors that are to be situated inside the sensor bar clamps [3], slide quick release sensor clamps [6] onto sensor bar tubes L in the appropriate positions.
Tighten with jacking screw.
Position sensor bar in sensor bar clamps [3].

Close each clamp and tighten.
8.5.3. Positioning Sensors
Step 13. Position sensors into clamps previously fastened to sensor bar.
Caution: Do not overload the sensor bar.
Note: When set up for manual pushing or pulling, the cart will be stable with up to four sensors fitted.
WARNING: The balance of the cart will be altered when it is being loaded/unloaded with equipment. If sensors are loaded first, this will cause the front of the cart to spring up. Ballast should be attached to the front platform to compensate for this.
Caution: Be sure always to load a suitable amount of weight towards the handle end to maintain a roughly neutral front to rear balance.
Tighten clamps just enough so sensors do not rotate or slide.
Note: The sensor bar and all sensors can be rotated 180° and moved in a linear direction, left or right.
Caution: Rotate sensor bar only by manually turning tube. Do not use sensors as levers.

9.2. Towing Assembly Instructions
Step 1. If cart has been assembled in push/pull configuration, remove handle platform [12] from front knuckle clamp [11]. Otherwise assemble as described in Section 8: Push/Pull Assembly but do not insert handle platform.
Step 2. Screw both sets of tubes T1, T2 and T3 together.
Step 3. Fit T1 tubes to axle using clamps at end of tubes.
Step 4. Slide front ‘T’ clamp [19] onto T38Fr, with the two large holes facing away from the towing hitch.

Connect tubes T38 and T38Fr. Place mid ‘T’ clamp [20] on junction.
Note: Towing hitch [27] is supplied pre-attached to T38Fr tube.
Note: Do not finish tightening at this stage.
Step 5. Insert both sets of diagonal tubes, TD1 & TD2 [23], into diagonal ‘T’ clamps [22].
Loosely tighten security screws.
Step 6. Insert TD1 tubes into front knuckle clamp [11] and fit diagonal ‘T’ clamps at joins of T1 and T2 tubes.

Step 7. Insert TD2 tubes into mid ‘T’ clamp and fit diagonal ‘T’ clamps at joins of T2 and T3 tubes.
Keep towing hitch upright.
Step 8. Slide T3 tubes into front ‘T’ clamp [19].
Tighten all screws.
Step 9. Hold the T38Fr tube.
Tighten the 3 top screws on front ‘T’ clamp.
Step 10. Tighten all clamps and screws.
Caution: Do not overtighten.

10. Sensor Setup
10.1. Setup with Bartington Grad-01-1000L Sensors and DL601 Data Logger
Note: Contact [email protected] for guidance on setting up the sensors in NMEA format.
When using Bartington Instruments Grad-01-1000L sensors, the data logger should be set to NMEA mode. Data logging takes place using a laptop running third party software.
Note: A separate data logger is required for each pair of sensors. Each data logger is powered by one BC601 standard battery cassette.
Note: Some older data loggers are not able to support NMEA mode. These should be returned to Bartington Instruments for upgrading.
Attach the data logger(s) to the data logger bracket [4]. Attach battery cassette(s) to the battery bracket [9b] and GPS system to the GPS clamp [9c].
Sensor setup follows the same procedures as for the standard Grad601 Single Axis Gradiometer System, described in the Grad601 Operation Manual (OM1800) available on the Bartington Instruments website.
Caution: Do not use sensors as levers. Grip the sensor bar itself when rotating it.
Note: You will need to locate a quiet magnetic spot in order to perform the adjustment. To simplify the process, pairs of sensors may be set up separately from the cart so as to avoid having to find a quiet magnetic area that is suitably large. A Grad601-2 carry beam from the Grad601 gradiometer system will be required for this.
Note: Set-up for both Grad601 and Grad-13 sensors includes a stage of rotating the sensors by 180o. The sensor bar rotates so that this can be accomplished without detaching the sensors from the cart.
Note: Connecting cables of different lengths may be supplied to accommodate the increased distance between sensors and data loggers. These should be fastened to the cart frame to prevent damage. Velcro tabs are provided for this purpose, coloured for easy identification of cables belonging to different sensor/data logger combinations.
10.2. Setup with Third Party Sensors and/or Data Logger
If using non-Bartington instrumentation, consult the manufacturer’s documentation. Bartington Instruments is unable to advise on the operation of third party products.

11. Cart Operation
Once the cart and all required sensors are assembled as required, proceed over the area to be surveyed at a speed appropriate to terrain conditions.
Caution: Not for towing on highways.
Caution: Not to exceed speeds stated in the product brochure.
Caution: Not for transporting any items other than scientific sensors and connected equipment.
12. Maintenance
Keep all cart parts clean and free from grit.
Keep all exposed threads clean, especially on the towing cart tube ends T1, T2 and T3.
T1, T2 and T3 can be greased on assembly, to prevent binding.
Note: Avoid use of grease in sandy / dusty conditions as this may cause a buildup of abrasive particles embedded in the grease.
12.1. Wheel Lubrication
It is recommended that the wheel beaings are lubricated at regular intervals of 60-100 hours of use.
The M6 screw in the centre of each wheel can be removed so that oil can be dripped into the bearings. The screw hole should be filled to the top with oil. Following this, PTFE tape needs to be reapplied to the screw before refitting it in the hole.
This should then be repeated with the M6 screw on the opposite side.
13. Storage
Clamps should be stored with the clamping/jacking screws in a neutral load (not under clamping or jacking pressure).
Tubes can be stored horizontally or in an upright position.

14. Transportation
Tubes should be strapped together for ease of handling.
Clamps should be boxed and kept separate from other parts, to avoid damage.
WARNING: Clamps can shatter if dropped.
15. Disposal
This product should not be disposed of in domestic or municipal waste. For information about disposing of this product safely, check local regulations.
