a picture of me again with my lipstick off.” At 95 years old, Dr. Height was sharper than most 35-year-olds with an MBA degree. Dr. Height was operating at an entirely different level of understanding, comprehension, caring and commitment than most anyone I’ve ever known.

When Hurricane Katrina hit, I discovered that there was a community of 300 homes in Gulfport, Mississippi which Dr. Height had helped build some 40 years ago. In the 1960’s, Dr. Height had approached the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) and encouraged them to believe in a group of women and families in Mississippi enough to invest in them, and allow them to contribute “sweat equity,” while the government provided the financial resources to build the homes. Thus the Forest Heights (yes, named after Dr. Height) community came to be. The community thrived, and 40 plus years later every one of those homeowners had paid off their mortgage and fulfilled their obligations to the government and lenders. One of the Forest Heights households even produced a young man who today, as a Secret Service agent, guards and protects our President. This was and is inspiring but when Hurricane Katrina struck most of this good work and good will was washed away. With little to no outside focus or attention on the rebuilding, Dr. Height moved into action once again – calling me and reminding me, “John, I always said you were a dreamer with a ‘shovel in your hands.” It was time to pick that shovel up and help the people of Gulfport recover.

Inspired by Dr. Height’s commitment, Operation HOPE created Project Restore HOPE, and with our partners at E*TRADE, we created a fund that provided more than $500,000 in cash grants to the families of Forest Heights. Next, Habitat for Humanity and the NAACP were moved to act by Dr. Height in the same vein, rebuilding houses and homes. Soon after, a group of Hollywood activists pulled together plans to rebuild the community center in Forest Heights, and before long, former U.S. President Bill Clinton and I were showing up in Forest Heights, with the Clinton Foundation and Operation HOPE working in partnership, making the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program available to all who qualified, and teaching financial literacy skills to the children who lived there (so that the financial aspect of

this crisis this may never happen again). This was classic Dr. Height; all about

action and servant leadership for her community. She just never stopped. She was love leadership in action.

I have so many wonderful memories of my time with Dr. Height, from the countless times she spoke and riveted audiences at Operation HOPE events and forums, including our Anacostia Economic Summit and our 2009 HOPE Global Financial Literacy Summit, to an incredible taped interview I did with her for my book LOVE LEADERSHIP: The New Way to Lead in a Fear-Based World, to the countless times she would “show up” in a city near you, always ready to help advance the cause of social justice, to quiet moments together in her home, helping her set up her new home computer, donated by HOPE partner Dell Computers. This is probably my most precious and hilarious memory of her.

At over 90 years old, Dr. Height simply didn’t want to be dated or out of the loop of progress. And so, when she heard that I had succeeded in getting my personal hero, Ambassador Andrew Young, hooked on first an iPod and then an iPhone, she was not about to be shown up! She asked if Ambassador Young was on the computer.

“No, Dr. Height, he is not,” I responded, and immediately, this was her next conquest. Within a couple of weeks my friend Brian Jones of Dell Computers, also an Operation HOPE Mid-Atlantic board member, had arranged for a first-class, brand-new Dell computer system to be delivered and installed in Dr. Height’s home office, replacing the PC dinosaur that had been there for decades. Within no time, Dr. Height was mastering the computer. Last time we spoke about her new passion for technology, she had her eyes on an iPod, so she could listen to books. She simply would not be outdone or outrun.

Dr. Height never gave up or gave

in, and she didn’t believe in retiring, but rather re-wiring. Dr. Height was not only an advisor to the last ten U.S. Presidents, and a matriarch to the civil rights movement, and a role model for women all around the world (the only African-American to control an office building on the same block as the White House and U.S. Department of the Treasury I might add), she was a real woman, and a real leader, and a real person, mentor and

friend --- who showed me and countless others “how to live.”

Like all good people who have passed on to be with the Father, “she has been promoted.” She is still with us, and with me, as her virtues and values are imbedded within the lives of the countless she touched along the way. I can see Dr. Height right now, giving God computer and hat-wearing lessons in Heaven.

This spring marked the release of a national advertising campaign on both radio and television an-

nouncing HOPE programs across the country. The Public Service Announce-ments were designed to highlight the importance of financial literacy and empowerment across the country.

The television ads were developed and produced by advertising leader BBDO as a part of their national part-nership with Operation HOPE.

John Osborn, president and chief executive officer of BBDO New York said, “eradicating poverty and empow-ering underserved communities with sustaining hope is an issue we at BBDO, and I personally, take very, very serious-ly. We believe that our partnership and approach, which we call ‘soul branding’ that accentuates the positive, will help further strengthen the power of this important message.”

The radio PSAs feature John Hope Bryant; HOPE Global Spokesman and Civil Rights legend Ambassador Andrew Young; and senior advisor to HOPE, President and CEO of the King Center and Founder of Realizing the Dream, Martin Luther King III.

The 30- and 60-second spots were produced by Premiere Radio Networks and are featured nationally. Produced in collaboration with Premiere engineers Larry Morgan in Los Angeles and Ra-chel McGrath in Atlanta, the spots en-courage people to take advantage of the organization’s suite of financial literacy products, which include foreclosure prevention, credit debt management and first-time homebuyers assistance by calling 888-388-HOPE(4673) or vis-iting www.operationhope.org.

“In many cases, the people who need Operation HOPE’s help the most don’t realize that we’re just down the street,” said John Hope Bryant. “Pre-miere Radio is helping us bring atten-tion to the free financial literacy solu-tions we offer through our centers and toll-free hotlines to underserved com-munities across the entire nation.”

“We are very proud of our partner-ship with Operation HOPE,” stated Julie Talbott, Premiere Radio Networks Presi-dent, Content and Affiliate Relations. “It’s an honor to help shine a spotlight on their tireless efforts to further finan-cial literacy and empower people across the nation, while encouraging other leaders to join us in this effort.”

The longstanding partnership with Premiere has produced and broad-casted of more than 18 different PSAs focused on HOPE financial empower-ment services. As a national sponsor to Operation HOPE, in the last six years, Premiere has provided millions of dol-lars worth of in kind support of HOPE’s Silver Rights Movement.

In response to the 7.0 magnitude earth-quake in Haiti and the commitment in January to help support the survivors

of the disaster now and in years to come, Operation HOPE sent a delegation to Hai-ti in May and June to explore the logistics of delivering HOPE’s programs in Port-au-Prince, with an eye on expanding to other Haitian cities in the months to come.

Immediately following the January 12, 2010 quake, HOPE responded by ex-panding services to Haitian communities in New York, Miami, and Washington DC.

“Most, if not all, Haitians living abroad have been deeply affected by this disaster,” said Fred Smith, senior advisor to the office of the chairman. “By providing these people with support in their com-munities, we have been able to help them

help their family and friends who survived the quake.”

As a Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) commitment, HOPE will hire and train staff and recruit HOPE Corps volunteers in Port-au-Prince to provide financial lit-eracy, economic empowerment and emer-gency recovery services to survivors, in hopes of creating sustainable change on-the-ground in the Caribbean country. All this will be done with the aim of starting a new paradigm of how international aid agencies respond to disasters and empow-

er local communities in the future.“Our vision for Haiti, in concert with

our belief of giving people a hand up and not a hand out, has Operation HOPE go-ing to Haiti, setting up shop in Haiti when, where and how it makes sense, and train-ing Haitians to provide services to help their fellow citizens recover from this di-saster,” stated John Hope Bryant. “It is our goal not only to provide them with the financial tools to help build their future but to inspire a new generation of entre-preneurs in the country.”

Highlighted during the visit were plans to deliver “economic triage” to Hai-tians as well as financial life management programs and long-term economic en-hancement services. Services offered in-clude youth and adult financial literacy, operating a cyber café for residents, pro-viding financial life management skills, effective self-employment skills, training for identified jobs and employment refer-ral, small business ownership and access to microfinance loans. These services will be delivered in coordination and partnership with other nonprofit organizations, gov-ernmental services providers and private sector companies in Haiti and America.

The services already available in Ameri-can cities include:• Adult financial life management skills

to Haitians and their extended fami-lies through local HOPE Financial Literacy Empowerment Centers and community venues.

• Access to HOPE Consumer Credit Crisis Hotline, Mortgage HOPE Crisis Hotline, credit improvement, home-owner workshops and counseling, and small business start-up guidance.

• Encourage individuals to obtain debit cards to facilitate the transfer of funds to Haiti with minimum fees.

• Delivery of HOPE’s award-winning Banking on Our Future curriculum to youth in Haitian communities which consists of a course on the basics of banking, checking and savings, power of credit, and investments.

The following services will be offered in Port-au–Prince:• Guidance and direction to individu-

als who are self-employed or want to become self-employed.

• Employment skills training and re-ferral to identified job opportunities.

• Workshops on small business expan-sion and personal wealth building through the ownership of appreciat-ing assets.

• Financial life management skills workshops for individuals and families.

• Access to micro-loan products for existing small businesses and self-employed individuals.

• Access to information on opening savings and debit card accounts.

• Youth financial literacy through the HOPE Banking on Our Future program.

In May, John Hope Bryant helped lead discussions around innovation in job creation and 21st century employ-

ment skills at the annual Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Develop-ment (OECD) Forum in Paris, France. This year’s delegates, which included high level government officials and business leaders, gathered to examine “The Road to Recov-ery: Innovations, Jobs and Clean Growth.”

OECD Secretary-General Angel Gur-ría, who opened the conference, noted “The OECD has a key role to play in shaping a new model of growth. The Forum offers a unique opportunity to debate the key issues on the international agenda, and to influ-ence policy making. For us, it is invaluable to benefit from the insight and perspectives of representatives of trade unions, business, academia, civil society, media, government and other international organizations as we develop these important new strategies.”

Bryant has played an active role in the global economic development community for many years and has used the forum to advocate financial literacy, economic em-powerment, small business and entrepre-neurship leading to an era of silver rights for the underserved.

“Integrating practical elements into traditional education needs to be a focus of OECD member countries if we are going to return to the levels of pre-crisis growth in the developed and developing world,” said Bryant. “To stay competitive, we need to in-corporate the next generation of financial literacy empowerment and innovative en-trepreneurship instruction into traditional curriculum, and to help the workforce of today to be inspired to train for the emerg-ing jobs of tomorrow. An “aspirationally” relevant worker that is willing and has the

ability to adapt will become a future asset.”The focus of the Road to Recovery

panel was matching skills to (job) oppor-tunities, as well as the emergence of green technologies as a new model for growth in the 21st century. Discussions also sur-rounded the life-long learning process and helping individuals train or re-train for new jobs.

Bryant’s participation at the confer-ence included guest blogging online in the OECD Observer. The entire session can be viewed on the OECD website.

Moderated by Stéphanie Antoine, a prominent media personality from France 24, Bryant was joined during the confer-ence-wide session by: Christine Evans-Klock, Chief, Skills and Employability Department, International Labour Orga-nization; José Mariano Gago, Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Portugal; Geoffrey I. Gallop, Professor and Director, Graduate School of Government, University of Sydney, Australia; Bob Harris, Senior Consultant to the General-Secretary, Education International; and Barbara Isch-inger, Director, Education, OECD

The OECD was established in 1961 and includes 31 member countries. Their mission is to bring together the govern-ments of countries committed to democ-racy and the market economy from around the world to support sustainable economic growth, boost employment, raise living standards, maintain financial stability, as-sist other countries’ economic development and contribute to growth in world trade. The organization provides a setting where governments compare policy experiences, seek answers to common problems, iden-tify good practice and coordinate domestic and international policies.

John Hope Bryant at the OECD Annual Forum in Paris Before 2010 and my introduction to Jahi Davis at Operation HOPE, I

thought that I was “ok” financially, spending whenever I felt like it. After at-

tending an excellent Credit and Financial Management seminar with Mr. Da-

vis, where I received a copy of my credit report and score, I was able to make

an appointment with him to personally analyze my financial situation.

Mr. Davis has given me a wealth of information on how to understand and

repair my credit score and how to become financially stable. He explained to

me what factors made up my score and the importance of paying bills on

time. He also analyzed my expenses and prepared a budget plan which would

help me to pay off the old debt that had been holding down my credit score.

I am now paying off my bills responsibly and cleaning up the mess that I had

procrastinated on for so long.

Mr. Davis assured me that by following the budget and repair plan we agreed

on, I would be headed in a positive direction towards increasing my credit

score and obtaining financial stability. I can not recall a time since college of

not spending out of control and never would have imagined that living on a

budget could be so liberating. I am confident that it will be life changing!

Sincerest thanks!

Petra

I wanted to take the time to send a special “thank you” to Opera-tion HOPE. I was laid off from my full time job in June 2009. Simul-taneously, I was producing a reunion concert that was slated to take place at A Phillip Randolph HS, the original home of Fiorello LaGuardia HS of Music and Art, my alma mater. Facing unem-ployment, no computer resource center to produce said reunion concert, no budget, I thought my professional career was over. Feeling very depressed and somewhat hopeless, I decided to come into Operation HOPE to see what resources were available. After receiving a tour of the facility, I was relieved to know that one could become a member and use the computer center. As I walked through the doors, it was a breath of resourceful fresh air. To see the clean open space, computer terminals was a godsend. Not only was I able to handle all the marketing and promotions for the reunion concert , but I met many wonderful people.Thank you, Operation HOPE! All my best, Juliette

On April 7, 2010, Operation HOPE celebrated the further expansion into the southeast with two events.

The day began with the Operation HOPE Financial Literacy Empowerment Center at Ebenezer Press Conference and Shovel Ceremony. It brought together over 200 leaders from banking, government, the community and clergy to celebrate the years of work and planning for a new finan-cial resource center for Atlanta residents.

Speakers included Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) Chairman Sheila Bair; HOPE Global Spokesman Am-bassador Andrew Young; The King Cen-ter President and Chief Executive Officer Martin Luther King, III; Ebenezer Baptist Church Senior Pastor Rev. Dr. Raphael G. Warnock; SunTrust Bank Mid-Atlantic Banking Group President and Chief Ex-ecutive Officer C.T. Hill; and FINANCIAL SERVICES ROUNDTABLE President and Chief Executive officer Steve Bartlett, among others. Distinguished podium

guests included Reverend Bernice King and Ms. Christine King Farris, daughter and sis-ter of Dr. Martin Luther King, respectively.

“For over 123 years, the Ebenezer Bap-tist Church has been directly engaged in leading the Atlanta community,” said Rev. Warnock. “The Operation HOPE Financial Literacy Empowerment Center at Ebenezer within the Martin Luther King, Sr. Resource Facility will become another one of those benchmarks. We welcome John Hope Bryant and the Operation HOPE team, who work tirelessly to provide the disenfranchised with a renewed vision, a feeling of hope, a sense of self-respect and dignity and an opportunity to succeed.”

Sponsors for the center include found-ing signature partners SunTrust Bank and State Farm Insurance, founding major partner Wachovia/Wells Fargo, along with supporting center partners Citizen’s Trust Bank, Capitol City Bank, the FINANCIAL SERVICES ROUNDTABLE and Ebenezer Baptist Church. The FDIC is a national

partner with Operation HOPE.“We can’t fully enjoy our hard-won

civil rights without economic rights,” says Bryant. “Our goal is to ensure that every individual has access to the mainstream economy and no communities are locked out or preyed upon. We are doing all we can to eliminate the need for what I call ghet-toized financial services, from payday lend-ers to check cashers to rent-to-own schemes that do little more than keep poor people poor. And there’s no better place to teach these life-giving lessons than in the cradle of the civil rights movement.”

In the afternoon, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta hosted the HOPE Atlanta Financial Forum, which gathered some of the country’s leading financial, political and business minds where they sought to ad-dress the next steps in coping with the eco-nomic crisis.

The event kicked off with keynote remarks by FDIC Chairman Bair, where she stated: “We look forward to partner-

and personnel to Anglican churches and of-ficials and help the overall promotion, facili-tation and participation of these programs across South Africa.

The Dignity module of Banking on Our Future was principally developed through the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders Global Dignity pro-gram. Dignity provides the empowerment module of the curriculum and is approved by the provincial and national South Afri-can Departments of Education. The ses-sions are designed to teach youth how to live a dignified life and empower them with the tools to get there.

Following the signing ceremony, Bry-ant and Tutu conducted a special session with a group of young learners encouraging them to think globally.

In 2007, HOPE made its five-year com-mitment to recruit 250 HOPE Corps volun-teers and teach 50,000 South Africans, pri-marily women and youth, about financial literacy, dignity and entrepreneurship. Since then, the program has successfully educated

over 15,000 individuals in seven provinces and recruited nearly 700 volunteers.

Private sector partners include the Citi Foundation, Deutsche Bank, International Finance Corporation, and the UPS Founda-tion. HOPE public sector partners include the Gauteng and Western Cape Departments of Education and the City of Tshwane. HOPE non-government organization partners in-clude the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, Peace Corps South Africa, Clinton Global Initiatives, the Banking Association South Africa, the South African Coalition on HIV/AIDS, CIDA University, The Tertiary School of Business Administration, and the Anglican Youth of Southern Africa.

Additionally, HOPE has expanded its volunteer program in South Africa to in-clude a Global HOPE Corps. Interested volunteers from the United States traveling to South Africa will have an opportunity to empower youth and women through the Banking on Our Future program. Volun-teers will instill learners with a sense of dig-nity, through financial education and entre-preneurship. For more information about HOPE Corps and volunteering contact Shannon Campbell at [email protected].

ing with the new HOPE Center… It will be a new beacon for Dr. King’s message of freedom, justice and dignity for all but more than that, it will be a place where people can come to gain practical knowl-edge and skills that they can use to attain their goals.”

After the keynote address, panelists joined moderator Chairman Lockhart to discuss financial literacy in the light of the current global economic crisis with the topic “Where Do We Go From Here?” The session addressed the role of financial literacy as we move out of this financial downturn. Questions also focused in on how to measure performance in this area and how federal agencies and nonprofit organizations should work together to ac-complish these goals. Panelists included Michelle Greene, deputy assistant secre-tary for financial education and financial access with the Department of the Trea-sury, civil rights icon Ambassador Andrew Young, Steve Bartlett, CEO of the FINAN-CIAL SERVICES ROUNDTABLE, Execu-tive Vice President and Chief of Staff for The King Center Isaac Newton Farris, CEO of the New York Stock Exchange Duncan Niederauer and Jim Clifton, president and CEO of Gallup, Inc.

HOPE is proud to welcome Land-on Taylor as Senior Consultant for the HOPE Office Innova-

tion, Research and Assessment (OIRA) as well as HOPE Advisors.

As Senior Consultant, Landon Tay-lor will provide direction and will aid in the development of the OIRA. A long-time supporter of HOPE, Landon Taylor is currently the Founder, Chairman, and CEO of the New Paradigm Broadcast-ing Network. Prior to founding NPBN, he worked as a Fortune 300 corporate officer for The First American Corpora-tion and as President- Strategic Markets Division for the corporation’s largest subsidiary, First American Title Insur-ance Company.

Taylor’s involvement with HOPE dates back several years to the early days of the organization. In 2006, he was hon-ored for his emergency economic “silver rights” response to Hurricane Katrina through HOPE Coalition America and led the effort at First American to fund the establishment of the virtual HOPE Center in Poway California.

The focus of the newly-created HOPE Office of Innovation, Research and Assessment, will be to track the success of current programs including Banking on Our Future, HOPE Finan-cial Literacy Empowerment Centers, HOPE Coalition America, HOPE Corps, HOPE Advisors, HOPE Forums and HOPE Global Initiatives, as well as FIVE MILLION KIDS (5MK), and the impor-tant 5-year Framework Agreement with the FINANCIAL SERVICES ROUND-TABLE; contribute to the development of the new Gallup- HOPE Financial Lit-eracy Index; and analyze the impact of HOPE programs and services on youth, adults and the community at large.

HOPE is proud to welcome its newest HOPE National Board Member NYSE Euronext

Chief Executive Officer and Director Duncan Niederauer.

“Given Duncan’s commitment to financial literacy and his standing in global finance, Duncan will be a great asset to our board” said Walbrecher, who made the announcement from Operation HOPE’s World Headquarters in Los Angeles. “Duncan has demonstrated outstanding leadership in financial education and believes it is time to take action to empower individuals to give them financial stability in their lives. We are honored to have him join our board and look forward to his guidance and insights for continued success.”

“I believe in the work Operation HOPE and in the need to help people of all ages and walks of life better understand and participate in the financial system,” Niederauer said. “NYSE Euronext shares Operation Hope’s commitment to financial education, and it is my goal to extend our association and mission to others in our community of listed companies and the financial system so that all Americans have the opportunity to become more financially capable and knowledgeable. Doing so is beneficial

for individuals and local communities, our economy and our nation.”

Niederauer will serve on the HOPE National Board under vice-chairs Tim Chrisman, the CEO of Chrisman & Company, the President of Capital One Bank, Lynn Pike and the Vice Chairman of US Bancorp Rick Hartnack. The HOPE National Board is comprised of some of the nation’s most powerful executives, decision-makers, bankers and economists. These individuals play an essential role in providing insight and guidance to the organization’s direction. To date, HOPE has served over 1.2 million customers, raised more than $500 million in inner-city investments and educated more than 475,000 youth in financial literacy.

ver rights’ mission to eradicate poverty and build wealth by providing people with a practical skill set and the ability to under-stand the ‘language of money.’”

U.S. Bancorp’s Chairman, President and CEO Richard K. Davis is also chairman of the FINANCIAL SERVICES ROUND-TABLE and in this position will encourage other leaders to make financial literacy a high-level business priority.

U.S. Bank and Operation HOPE share the view that the best way to deal with the current economic crisis and to help prevent it from happening again is to help people get out of the untenable situations they are in - through loan modifications and other pro-active assistance. The second objective, shared by all the members of the FINAN-CIAL SERVICES ROUNDTABLE, is to en-sure that false barriers do not impede the flow of credit to the American consumer with less than an 800 credit score; that cred-

it is available to all who need it and have demonstrated that they can use it wisely. Fi-nally, to make sure that a crisis of this mag-nitude does not repeat itself, all financial institutions need to guarantee that Ameri-can consumers are educated in the effective, safe and wise use of the financial system for credit, savings, investing, home purchases, retirement planning, life insurance and the myriad of other products available to the American household.

U.S. Bank has been a supporter of HOPE programs aimed at youth financial literacy in Los Angeles and Denver for several years. In addition, through its acquisition of CalNational Bank in Los Angeles, U.S. Bank has taken over annual financial support of the HOPE Financial Literacy Empowerment Center in Maywood, California.

In making these financial commit-ments to HOPE, U.S. Bank strives to en-courage other financial service organiza-tions to join the Silver Rights Movement in making financial literacy a national priority and an essential objective of every financial service provider in America.
