    OPERATING THEATRE CLEANING GUIDELINES

    Research has proved that the risk of infection from any horizontal/vertical

    surface is of minor significance. Therefore cleaning with disinfectant isunnecessary except when there is spillage of blood/ body fluid from a patientwith a known infectious disease.

    The appropriate protective clothing must be worn see Protective Clothingsection 2.3.

    OPERATING SUITE including: Anaesthetic Room, Scrub Room,Preparation Room, Operating Room, Offices and Corridors.

    Furniture and all horizontal surfaces must be kept clean and dry and free from

    visual dirt/dust.

    SURFACE FREQUENCY OF CLEANING SUBSTANCE TO BE USED

    FLOORS

    a) Spot mop spillage betweencases

    a) Use appropriate cleansingagent/ disinfectant asadvised page 3.1.1)

    b) Clean at the end of a list. b) Warm water anddetergent, dry thoroughly.

    c) Use scrub machine oncedaily.

    c) Warm water anddetergent and drythoroughly.

    WALLS

    a) Splashes of body fluid, e.g.blood must be cleaned offimmediately

    a) Use Chlorine releasingtablets (as advised page3:1:1)

    b) All walls to be cleaned by

    wall washing team every3-6 months.

    b) Warm water and

    detergent and drythoroughly.

    HORIZONTALSURFACES

    Daily Warm water and detergentand dry thoroughly.

    FURNITURE a) Splashes of body fluid e.g.blood must be cleaned off

    immediately

    Warm water and detergent and drythoroughly, and for blood

    contamination as advised see page3.1.1

    b) In between patient useWarm water and detergent and drythoroughly.

    c) Daily Warm water and detergent and drythoroughly

    WASH/HAND BASINS See Cleaning Policy page 3.2.1

    CLEANING EQUIPMENT

    Disposable cloths/paper must be used for cleaning and must be discarded after use.

    EQUIPMENT CLEANING METHOD FREQUENCY

    MOPS Must be disposable or laundered. Daily

    MOP BUCKETS Cleaned and dried thoroughly. Daily

    SCRUBBING MACHINE(Designated for operatingtheatre use only):

    BRUSH AND PADS Detached and washed and dried. After each use

    TANK Machines with a tank shouldpreferably not be used. However ifscrubbing machines with a tank areused, the tank must bedisconnected, emptied, washed andstored dry.

    Between use

    TANK TUBING a) Disconnect from the machine.

    b) Flush with warm water.

    c) Leave to dry.

    Between use.
