SWIMMING POOL INSPECTION & MAINTENANCE Swimming pool operations are supervised by four Rec Center professionals who are trained & have earned Certified Pool Operator status awarded by the National Swimming Pool Foundation and Aquatic Facility Operator certification attained under the auspices of the National Park & Recreation Association. The pool is inspected twice annually by the Genesee County Health Department & tested several times daily by Rec Center professionals & lifeguards to ensure that health & water quality standards are maintained. The swimming pool & spa receive special cleaning weekdays from 9-11 a.m., in addition to automatic cleaners which work throughout the night. LIFEGUARDS Any time the swimming pool & spa are open, members & guests are carefully & constantly observed by American Red Cross (ARC) trained & certified lifeguards. Lifeguards are equipped with two-way radios, an emergency telephone, rescue equipment, a well-stocked first aid kit & the knowledge that additional professional help is just seconds away. Lifeguards are required to maintain skills in CPR/AED, first aid & water rescue. They must pass a water readiness test & receive site-specific training before they are assigned to lifeguard shifts. Lifeguards participate in periodic in-service training sessions to keep their skills honed. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES The Rec Center staff works closely with the UM-Flint Department of Environ- ment, Health & Safety & the Department of Public Safety to ensure that all appropriate standards, policies & procedures are met & followed. Emergency drills, including fire & storm, backboarding & emergency building evacuation are planned, implemented, critiqued & fine-tuned on a regular basis. Successful collaborative efforts pay off in terms of safety on a daily basis. Health & fitness can’t be achieved without attention to safety. All staffers are concerned with working for the safety of guests who visit, & all are involved in & committed to the standards, guidelines, protocols, training, certifications & continuing education which are indicative of the tradition of excellence associated with the University of Michigan. General Policiest

It is the philosophy of Recreational Services to provide a safe, comfortable atmosphere& to strive to protect & respect the rights of all members. The conduct policy isimplemented to serve as a basis for governing use of the Recreation Center& other areas within the jurisdiction of the department. Incidents not coveredby a given policy will be dealt with upon occurrence. Persons in violation of theconduct policy may face expulsion, or other sanctions as outlined below, dependingon the severity of the conduct. Decisions may be appealed, as described below:

PROHIBITED CONDUCT• Use of obscene, profane, vulgar, derogatory, demeaning, or threatening language or gestures• Spitting• Disregarding facility usage policies & procedures including signage• Using a false I.D. or another person’s I.D. for admission to the building• Entering the facility by means other than proper check-in procedures• Verbal abuse of patrons, students, staff members or others• Harassment of patrons, students, staff members or others• Damage to University of Michigan-Flint equipment (whether restitution is made may mitigate the severity of the sanction imposed)• Violent, assaultive &/or physical behavior directed toward patrons, staff members or others• Threats, verbal or otherwise, directed at patrons, staff members or others• Theft of personal property• Theft of University of Michigan-Flint equipment or services• Sexual misconduct; including, but not limited to exhibitionistic & obscene behavior• Violation of Recreation Center policies or procedures• Violation of University of Michigan-Flint policy or local, state or federal regulations or laws

SANCTIONSEngaging in any of the prohibited conduct outlined above may result in sanction(s) asdetermined by Recreational Services Administration. Some of the factors influencing thenature of the sanction(s) include the severity of the prohibited conduct at issue, &whether the person is a repeat offender of the conduct policy. Sanctions for engagingin prohibited conduct may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Verbal warning by Recreational Services staff• Restitution• Expulsion from the Recreation Center for the remainder of the day• Expulsion from the Recreation Center for a specified period of time, e.g. one day, ninety days, one year, five years, etc• Permanent expulsion from the Recreation Center• Referral to the appropriate University of Michigan-Flint disciplinary procedures for additional possible sanctions, up to & including possible dismissal from the University

Patrons observing inappropriate behavior should report such behavior to a Recreational Servicesstaff member immediately.

APPEAL PROCESSPersons wishing to file an appeal should write to the Recreational Services Board of Review, Recreation Center, University of Michigan-Flint, 303 E. Kearsley St., Flint, MI 48502, within thirty (30) days of the date on the letter-issuing penalty. The Board of Review will set an appeal meeting within thirty (30) days after the receipt of the letter of appeal. The Board of Review will then make a written decision within five (5)business days. The decision of the Board of Review will be final.

1. If the Board of Review supports the action taken under the Conduct Policy, a prorated refund will be given from the time of the final decision to the end of the membership/service period.2. If the Board of Review reverses the action taken under the Conduct Policy, a prorated refund will be given from the day following the incident to the day the patron is allowed entry to the Recreation Center.

WEAPONS POLICYPossessing, wearing, carrying or using firearms or any other dangerous weaponsis prohibited on any property owned, leased or controlled by the University of Michigan,except by properly authorized law enforcement officers.Complete text of the Regents’ ordinance establishing this policy may be viewed atwww.umflint.edu/departments/safety/weapons.htm

ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUGSRegardless of age, alcohol is not permitted in the Rec Center at any time. Students, members and guests should not possess, transport, consume, or be in the presenceof alchol in any area of the Rec Center. The possession, use, sale, distribution, or manufacture of any illegal substance and the possession drug/smoking paraphernaliais prohibited in the Rec Center. Possession, use, or distribution of alcohol or illicitdrugs may lead to a referral to the appropriate local, state, &/or federal authoritiesfor prosecution for a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on the nature of the offense.The sanctions for such offenses may include fines &/or imprisonment.

OTHER PROHIBITED ACTIVITIESAfter careful review of facility design & usage patterns, it has been determined thatit is not reasonably prudent to allow indoor use of soccer balls (except futsal),throwing/batting a softball/baseball/lacrosse/cricket ball, throwing/ kicking a football,wearing roller blades/skates, using floor hockey sticks/ fencing swords, or using othertypes of hard projectiles & stick-like objects during open recreation. Allowing thesetypes of activities to occur during open recreations puts the Rec Center in directviolation of standards of care for facilities such as ours & makes the University liable ifan incident or injury should occur.

SOUND EQUIPMENTIndividuals who wish to listen to MP3 players, iPods, or other personal electronicentertainment devices while they workout, must use players with personal headphonesonly. Individual use of players without headphones is prohibited. Fitness Classes& group activities may sometimes use sound equipment without personal headphones.Advance authorization by Rec Center administrative staff is required for group useof sound equipment.

FOOD AND DRINKFood is allowed in vending area only. Groups may have food in the Activity Room byreservation only. Water in plastic containers is encouraged. The lobby & the thirdfloor in the University Center, as well as the ground level of the Murchie ScienceBuilding have food & drink sales, vending, & accommodations for eating.

LOST AND FOUND POLICYItems found in the Recreation Center are retained in the Business Office for a periodof 30 days. At that time, all articles become the property of the Recreational ServicesDepartment & are donated to a local charity. Please inquire during Business Officehours if you believe you may have lost belongings at the Rec Center.

FEES FOR EQUIPMENT AND TOWELSEquipment & towels checked out at the Equipment Station must be checked inbefore you leave the Rec Center. A record is created in the computer when you checkout equipment &/or towels, & you must inform the attendant when you return itemsso that your account record is cleared for each daily visit. Fees are assessed based onthe value of the equipment &/or towel non-returned. 2

SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONSThe University of Michigan-Flint Rec Center strives to meet the needs of all users.Please see administrative staff to discuss special accomodations.

PERSONAL TRAINERS AND COACHESThe University of Michigan-Flint is a state-funded institution; our buildings and resources may not be used for private/individual monetary benefit. Individuals whowant to provide personal training or coaching service must make contractual arrange-ments to rent space at the Recreation Center in accordance with University ofMichigan policies & procedures.

SPA AND SAUNA USAGEIn addition to the general spa & sauna guidelines posted, the following rules must beadhered to for the safety of all patrons wishing to utilize the spa.

• Each person shower before entering the spa.

• For their personal safety & well-being, children age 12 and younger are not allowed to use the whirlpool spa & saunas. Youth ages 13-17 must be accompanied by their parent/ sponsor who must remain in close proximity.

• The whirlpool spa is designed for persons who wish to sit & relax. Swimming, diving, dunking, & splashing are not allowed. Sitting, standing, or walking on top of the tub is prohibited.

If the chemical &/or temperature levels do not meet the standard requirementsestablished for operation & usage, or if there are mechanical problems, the spa willbe closed for the period necessary to correct conditions. No memberships will be prorated for this reason.

The UM-Flint Recreation Center follows the American College of Sports Medicine Health/FitnessFacility Standards and Guidelines.

Recommended temperature for dry heat saunas is 160-170 degrees Fahrenheit.• Wait at least 10 minutes after exercising before entering• Limit use to no more than 10 minutes at one time• If pregnant, have heart or kidney disease, are on certain medications for cardiovascular disease, and/or have medical issues that could be adversely affected by high heat, do not use.• Wear shorts and/or sit on a towel • Heat suits or sauna suits should not be worn• Exercising in the sauna is not allowed• Do not pour water or other liquids/substances on rocks or heating elements

Exposure to high temperatures for an extended period of time can result in heat exhaustion, heatstroke, heart attack, & death.

LAP SWIMMINGThe lifeguard is authorized to direct swimmers to appropriate areas of the pool according to the swimmer’s ability.

If you stop between lengths, sit on the edge of the pool to avoid congestion at theends of the lanes. Swim in the direction of the arrows posted & stay as closeto the side of the lane as possible. Share lanes when the demand warrants it.Be continually observant & considerate of those swimming near you.

POOL LOCKER ROOM SECURITYTo ensure the safety & security of guests & property, the pool locker room doors are locked during normal operating hours. Rec Center members enter by using their MCard in the appropriate card reader located at each door, front & back, to both men’s & women’s pool locker rooms. Day pass visitors can request a key card at check-in & use the key card at the pool locker room card readers. Swipe your card, listen for the click & open the door. Swimmers need to remember to take their MCard or key card to the pool so they can re-enter the locker room after their swim. We will assist in re-entry for those who forget & leave their card in their locker. For your convenience, we have safety pin equipped card holders available at check-in. Pin your card to your towel & take it along. If your MCard or key card doesn’t activate the card reader, please bring the card to the business office so it can be checked,adjusted, or replaced.

GENERAL POOL USERecreation Center policy requires that each person must shower before entering the pool. You may not enter the water wearing a bandage, with an open sore, or any type of skin infection. Proper swim attire of modest cut & design must be worn for admit- tance into the pool or spa enclosure. No thongs, jeans, cut-offs or dirty apparel arepermitted. Swim caps are not required. Only Coast Guard approved floatation devices are allowed; no inflatables.

Street shoes are not to be worn in the pool enclosure (unless performing official duties), & no food or beverages (other than water) are allowed.

Swim in the designated area for your skill or activity. You must be able to swim onelength of the pool without stopping in order to swim in the deep end. Swim gearor equipment are allowed in the general activity areas, only if room permits asdetermined by the lifeguard. Lap swimmers, classes, & open swim all share the pool & each must adjust to accommodate usage by all. Do not sit, hang or play on the lane markers. Running or rough play is not allowed. Nodiving of any kind is permitted. Flips, cartwheels, backdives, etc. are also prohibited.

All children under the age of 13 must be directly supervised by a parent or sponsorwhile in the pool area. If a child can swim (as determined by the lifeguard), theparent may supervise from the deck if desired. If the child cannot swim (as determinedby the lifeguard) &/or if the shallowest water level is more than chest high, thechild must be accompanied in the water by a parent or sponsor who is able to swim.

To prevent electrocution, the pool & spa are closed when thunder is heard &/or whenlightening is seen. The pool wil remain closed until 30 minutes of no thunder &/orlightening occurs.

Court Sportst

BASKETBALLCourts are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The east court will feature half-courtplay Friday nights & weekends. UM-Flint students, faculty & staff seeking full-court play mayparticipate in Intramural Sports leagues or inquire at the Business Office.

RACQUETBALL AND WALLYBALLFive (5) racquetball courts (two can be set up for wallyball) are available free of charge duringall open building hours. Rec Center members may reserve one court, for one hour, up toone day in advance. Make your court reservation during business office hours, at least2 hours prior to the requested reservation. If play has not started by 15 minutes past thereservation time, the court is turned over to the next waiting guest. Call the business office,(810) 762-3441, for more information or to make a reservation.

TENNISTennis play is available on the west gym court from 6-11 a.m. Monday through Friday mornings.Recreation Center members may make a court reservation by calling the business officeat (810) 762-3441 during office hours - the last scheduled reservation will be 10 a.m.Please call at least two hours ahead to ensure set up time. If play has not started by 15minutes after the reservation time, the court will be turned over to the next waiting guest.Use of the tennis court at other hours of the day, is at the discretion of the facility manager.

Safety Issuest

EXERCISE PRECAUTIONSExercise is a stress placed on the body, therefore certain precautions should be considered. Participants are encouraged to get a physical exam prior to engagingin vigorous exercise. Users who are over age 40 and/or have any ailment or specialcondition(s), which may increase risk of heart disease, are strongly encouraged toconsult a physician prior to engaging in exercise.

INSURANCE/LIABILITYInherently, many recreational sports & fitness activities present the possibility of injury.Participation in programs is voluntary; individuals assume responsibility for theirown safety & health. All individuals who intend to participate in vigorous activitiesshould, for their own protection, have a physical examination to determine if they areable to participate. Medical insurance, which would cover expenses incurred by aninjury, is strongly recommended.

PROPER FOOTWEARProper footwear is required in all areas of the Rec Center (other than the locker rooms& pool). No bare feet, open toe shoes, sandals, flip flops, etc.

• Must be age 18 or older to use weight equipment or machines without supervision• Ages 13-17 must have DIRECT one-to-one supervision provided by parent or sponsor• Ages 12 & younger are not permitted to use weight equipment or remain in the area• Do not drop dumbbells, bars, plates or machine weights• Secure all plates with collars on all barbell lifts• Lift with a spotter• Deadlifting is prohibited• Return all weight equipment to appropriate storage areas when done lifting• Shirts and shoes are required at all times• No food or beverages (except water)• Do not monopolize or rest on equipment or machines• Proper footwear is required in all areas of the Rec Center (other than the locker rooms & pool). No bare feet, open toe shoes, sandals, flip flops, etc

• Must be age 18 or older to use track without supervision• Ages 13-17 must have DIRECT adult supervision• Ages 12 & younger are not permitted to use or be on track• Runners use the inside lane• Walkers use the outside lane• No more than two runners or walkers side by side• Observe the directional arrow• Keep moving at all times• No skates, bikes, strollers allowed• No food or beverages, except water allowed on track• Proper footwear is required in all areas of the Rec Center (other than the locker rooms & pool). No bare feet, open toe shoes, sandals, flip flops, etc

Cardio Room Policyt

• Must be age 18 or older to use cardio machines without supervision• Ages 13-17 must have DIRECT one-to-one supervision provided by parent or sponsor• Ages 12 & younger are not permitted to use cardio machines• Shirts & shoes are required at all times• No open toes, sandals, or flip flops• No food or beverages (except water)• Do not monopolize or rest on machines• 30-minute limit when other patrons are waiting

A third party wishing to use University of Michigan (U-M) facilities (including UM-FlintRecreation Center) to host activities involving children/teens must: • Complete a Third Party Acknowlegement of Responsibility form: http://childrenoncampus.umich.edu/Third-Party-Responsibility.pdf • Inform participants and their parents/legal guardians that the third party’s event or program is neither endorsed nor sponsored by U-M. • Assume responsibility for conducting background checks* for all authorized adults or program staff.** • Provide training to authorized adult or program staff on policies and issues related to health, wellness, safety, and security of children/teens. Training must address the following topics: w Detecting and reporting abuse or neglect w First aid/CPR and medication management w Management of participant conduct management and disciplinary procedures w Authorized adult or program staff code of conduct w Sexual and other unlawful harassment w Safety and security protocols • Retain documentation of training completion. • Obtain liability waiver agreements between each program participant’s parent or guardian and the third party. Liability for incidents that may occur as a result of the organization’s activities falls on the organization only and does not extend to the University of Michigan. • Immediately report known, suspected, or received information indicating that a minor has been abused or neglected, or other concerns about the safety of minors to the appropriate campus Department of Public Safety and Security. • Standard lease agreements must be utilized when leasing space to third party. The third party must disclose if payment is received from program participant’s parent or guardian for the purpose of the event or activity. • Provide insurance coverage as outlined below and name the University of Michigan as additional insured on the policy for the duration of the event, program, or activity occurring on university property. w Workers’ Compensation - insuring all operations that are in full compliance with the worker’s compensation and occupational disease laws of all authorities having jurisdiction in Michgan. Aquatics Policies

CHILDREN AGES 12 & YoungerDay passes for children are discounted and are limited to designated areas in theRecreation Center (Gym Floor, Racquetball Courts, Activity Area, & Pool) & must be directly supervised at all times by a parent or adult sponsor age 18 or older. Children12 years of age & younger ARE NOT permitted to use or be in the area of the Track, Cybex®/Free Weight Room, Cardio Room, Saunas, Whirlpool Spa, & Adult Fitness Classes. Child care is not available. Adults sponsoring anyone 12 years old or younger must directly supervise the child(ren) & may not participate in acivities including, butnot limited to, playing basketball with other adults, walking/running on the track,using exercise equipment, participating in a fitness class, simming laps, etc.

YOUTH 13 through 17Youth ages 13-17 may use all areas of the facility; however, they must be directly supervised by a parent or adult sponsor age 18 or older while on the Track, in the Cybex®/Free Weight Room, Cardio Room or participating in Fitness Classes. When direct supervision is not required, the authorized adult must be accessible within the facility.

During camps and other special events, various activity spaces may become unavailablefor open recreational usage for a set period of time. Schedules will be posted notifyingmembers, students & day pass patrons.

Facility Rentalt

The UM-Flint Recreation Center is available for rent based on availability.

A maximum of 250 participants, including chaperones is allowed. Professional UM-Flint Recreation Center staff are on duty, however supervision of participants in all designatedareas is ultimately group leader responsibility.

Please call the membership office at (810) 762-3441 for information about rental fees and/or to check calendar avilability for your special event.
