MissionMOTHER McAULEY LIBERAL ARTS HIGH SCHOOL is a Catholic educational communitycommitted to providing a quality secondary education for young women. In the tradition of theSisters of Mercy and their foundress, Catherine McAuley, we prepare students to live in a complex, dynamic society by teaching them to think critically, communicate effectively, respond compassionatelyto the needs of their community and assume roles of Christian leadership. In partnership with parents,we empower young women to acknowledge their giftedness and to make decisions with a well-developedmoral conscience. We foster an appreciation of the diversity of the global community and a quest forknowledge and excellence as life-long goals.

ABOUT McAULEYA small group of Mercy Sisters arrived in Chicago in 1846, led by FrancesWarde, Catherine McAuley'sclosest friend. Within weeks they opened a "select school" that became St. Francis Xavier Academy forFemales, the first school chartered in the city of Chicago. The course of study covered primary, secondary and collegiate levels. The first building was located onWabash Avenue between Madison andMonroe Streets. When the Chicago Fire in 1871 destroyed the original building, St. Francis Academyrelocated to 29th andWabash for a short time, then to a larger site at 49th and Cottage Grove in 1900.In the 1950's, the southwest side of Chicago needed a Catholic girls' school to serve a fast-growingpopulation. In 1956 "the Academy" relocated once again. Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High Schooland St. Xavier College (which is now a university) opened in the fall of 1956 to serve secondary andpost secondary students respectively. McAuley opened with 523 students, 300 of which were first yearstudents. McAuley has continued to expand. Today approximately 1400 young women and 150 facultyand staff members form the McAuley community.

CHARISMMother McAuley was dedicated to serving those in need. She had strong faith, courage and initiative.Others joined her and worked with her because they too believed in the dignity of all persons. They alsobelieved that one must work actively to make the world a better place in which to live.

CHALLENGEThe young women of Mother McAuley High School have inherited a great tradition and a greatchallenge. They are challenged to preserve the faith and make it grow, to have the courage to live by theCatholic values they believe in, to take the initiative to be women of the 21st century - educated womenwho will respond to the needs of others. The faculty, staff and administration share in Mother McAuley'scall to educate young women. The challenge for the future requires the commitment of each person whohelps form the community of Mother McAuley High School.

SERVICEService is an essential dimension of the mission of the school. Through direct service and withreflection, students respond compassionately to the needs of the community and critically reflect onneeded societal systemic change.

Giving ThanksWe are pleased to present the Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School2010 Annual Report. This past school year marks the completion of our164th year of Catholic education in the Mercy tradition. We are grateful tothe Sisters of Mercy for entrusting us with their mission to develop youngwomen as confident, well-educated and strong leaders for the future.

We are truly thankful for the generous financial support from our board,Sisters of Mercy, alumnae, parents, faculty, staff, friends, and neighbors. We need to ensure that a McAuley education remains within the financialreach of our students by keeping tuition rates affordable and by providingfinancial assistance to those families that need help. This delicate balancecan only be accomplished through our ongoing partnership with individualsand organizations.

Given their rigorous liberal arts education, we are confident that ourgraduates are thoroughly prepared for college. The Class of 2010 has theproud distinction of having achieved a 100% college acceptance rate. They also received over $23 million dollars in college scholarship funds. In fact, we believe that each of our alumnae enjoys a “Lifetime ofAdvantages” as a result of their unique McAuley experience.

In this Annual Report, we will acknowledge our supporters, present ourfinancial results, and share some stories of our success at McAuley.Whether you are a donor, alumna, parent or friend, we are certain thatMother McAuley has touched your heart in some way. Please continueto support and/or participate in our sacred mission and help us spread themessage of Catherine McAuley to others.

We wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving, a Merry Christmas andin the words of Catherine: “Provident God, pour out your blessings on ourbenefactors. Their goodness has encouraged us; their gifts have enhanced ourefforts to recreate your merciful presence in our world. In gratitude, we ask youto reward them with signs of your generous love and, when their lives onearth are over, to welcome them to your heavenly banquet. Amen.”

Staff honorees and building managers Vicki Nettle and PaulRossetti are an integral force behind the scenes at MotherMcAuley. The care and concern they show for even the smallestof tasks exemplify their true love of McAuley and its community. They selflessly give their time and energy to keep the students, faculty, staff and Sisters of Mercy safe, and ensure McAuley isrunning smoothly at all times.

Operation Haiti and the EcoMacsThe students in theEcoMacs Club beganbuilding a solar-powered biodieselprocessor in November2009 with theintention of donatingit to a school in Haitimonths before theregion suffered thedevastating earthquake. The students designed a processor that would combine a naturalresource with a natural energy source to create a sustainable systemfor producing fuel. The natural resource is the seed of the Jatrophaplant which grows abundantly in Haiti. The solar poweredprocessor will heat the oil rich seeds of the Jatropha plant. Onceheated, the oil is easily extracted, mixed with Methaoxide andagitated in order to separate the glycerin byproduct from the oil.Once the glycerin is removed, the pure biodiesel fuel created canbe used by farmers in their tractors. The glycerin byproduct willalso generate a source of income for the village since it can be usedas fertilizer and made into soap. Any excess energy generated bythe solar panels for the biodiesel processor will be used to provideelectricity for the school. The hope is that with electricity, studentsbeyond sixth grade can continue their education by attendingclasses at night. The young women in the EcoMacs Biodiesel Teamhave learned much more than just the steps in building a biodieselprocessor. These students have learned how their work goes beyondthe streets of Chicago and will impact the people of Pichon, Haitifor generations. The EcoMacs have received national attention fortheir hard work including being named a 2010 Grand PrizeWinner in the prestigious Lexus Eco Challenge; a winner of theTrue Heroes contest, and the “Education Vision Award” from theKeep Chicago Beautiful organization.

Top Lifetime Donors at Mother McAuleyIn addition to the many recent donors who made gifts to our organization within the last school year,

we want to recognize those who have given generously over their lifetimes. Some have givensteadily for years, some have given one-time major or planned gifts; some have done both.

Thank you to the following individuals for their extraordinary gifts.

The Bigane FamilyAs the five daughters of a wonderfully caring and lovingmom, the Bigane girls knew they had to plan somethingspecial for their mom’s 80th birthday. The Bigane familyhas been part of the Mother McAuley community for over30 years. The five girls, Anne ’76, Katie ’78, Sheila ’79,Meg ’82, and Julie ’84, are all alumnae of the school. Theirmom, Mrs. Edward Bigane, has played an active role in thecommunity since Anne was a freshman. The girls thoughtwhat better gift than to give back to McAuley on behalf oftheir mom. The Bigane family and friends raised money thatwas dedicated to tuition assistance as well as helping currentseniors receive the full McAuley experience.

Paying it Forward Two families show their support of McAuley’sMission by giving back in the name of loved ones.

The Thibeau FamilyOn January 24 the Mary Kay Thibeau MemorialScholarship Luncheon was held in the new dining hallat Mother McAuley. Mary Kay was an alumna from theClass of 1970 who passed away in January 2004 ofovarian cancer. A scholarship was set up in her name tohelp current seniors who are struggling to pay their tuition.Mary Kay strongly believed in the McAuley educationand that every student should have the opportunity tocomplete her four years here. The event raised $4,500 andthe afternoon’s success will allow a senior to finishher education at McAuley.
