ThismanualdescribestheoperationoftheGenius™2Checker/Calibrator.ThisdevicehasbeendevelopedtochecktheaccuracyoftheGenius™2TympanicThermometerandautomaticallyrecalibratethethermometer,ifnecessary.Inaddition,theGenius2Checker/CalibratorhasthecapabilitytogenerateatestreportforeachthermometertestedandsaveittoaUSBflashdrive.TheGenius2Checker/CalibratorwillworkwithallGenius™2Thermometersoftwarerevisions.
TheGenius2Checker/Calibratorcontainstwoindependentlycontrolledinfraredcalibrationtargetsthataresimilartofactorycalibrationtargets.These“blackbody”targetsaredesignedtohaveefficientradiativeheattransferandproduceinfraredradiationthatapproximatesthehumanearattemperaturesof32.2°C(90.0°F)and40.6°C(105.0°F).

• TheGenius2Checker/Calibratorisdesignedtobeoperatedasspecifiedinthismanual.ProtectionprovidedbythesafetydevicesintheGenius2Checker/Calibratormaybeimpairedifthedeviceisnotusedinaccordancewiththedirectionscontainedinthismanual.
• TheGenius2Checker/Calibratorenclosureisnotwaterproof.Avoidspillingliquidofanykindontothefrontpanelofthedevice.Likewise,theGenius2Checker/CalibratorispoweredfromanACpowersource.Avoidthepotentialforcontactbetweenliquidandanyexternalsurfaceofthedevicewhileconnectedtothemainssource.
• Thesurfacequalityoftheinteriorofthereferenceblackbodytargetsiscriticaltotheiroperationasefficientinfraredradiators.Careshouldbeexercisedwhenworkingneartheentrancetotheblackbodytargetstoensurethatnocontactismadewiththesurfaceinsidetherubberflaps.
• Intheeventofablownfuse,replacethefusewithafusethatexactlymatchestheratedvoltage,current,andformfactorasspecifiedintheGenius2Checker/CalibratorSpecificationssectionofthismanual.MakesurethedeviceisdisconnectedfromtheACpowersourcebeforechangingablownfuse.
• Thisdeviceshouldnotbeusedinthepresenceofflammableanesthetics.Thereisriskofanexplosioninthepresenceofthese anesthetics.
• Therearenouser-serviceablecomponentsinthisdevice.Donotremovethefrontpanel.Referservicingtoqualifiedservice personnel.
• Useonlythesuppliedpowermodulewiththisdevice.• WhenpromptedtoinserttheGenius2Thermometerintooneoftheblackbodytargets,thereisa60secondwindowoftimeto
accomplishtheinsertion.Ifthetimedelayexceedsthisperiod,theprocedurewillbeterminated.• Priortochecking/calibratingaGenius2Thermometer,ensurethatthethermometerlensisclean.Effectivecleaningwill
ensurethatthecalibrationtolerancesarecorrectlyverified.RefertothecleaninginstructionsintheGenius2Thermometeroperating manual.
• WheninstallingaGenius2probecoverontothetipoftheGenius2Thermometer,useonlycoversthatareinacassetteandnotreleased.Trytoavoidallhandcontactwiththeprobecoversinordertopreventinaccuratereadings.Donotreuseprobecovers.UseonlyGenius2probecovers.
• LettheGenius2Checker/Calibratorwarmupafterpower-upforatleast15minutesbeforeuse.MakesurethattheGenius2Thermometers,probecoversandtheGenius2Checker/Calibratorhavehadenoughtimetoequilibratetoroomtemperaturebeforeproceeding.Allowalongerwarmupperiodifthedeviceorthermometerswereattheextremelimitsofallowedambienttemperature.TheportabilityoftheGenius2Checker/Calibratorwillallowforrelocationofthedevicetoareasthatmeettheambienttemperaturerequirements.
• TomaintainElectromagneticCompatibility(EMC)conformance,useaUSBflashdrivethatisCEmarkedandmeetsEN55022 standard.
• DonotputorresttheGenius2ThermometeronthesurfaceoftheGenius2Checker/Calibratoratanytime.Thethermalsensorsinsidethethermometerprobetipwilldetecttheheattransferredfromtheblackbodytargetsthroughthefrontpanelsurface.Thiswillcauseinstabilityofthethermometersensors,whichwillproduceerroneoustemperaturereadings.
• TheGenius2Checker/Calibratormayonlybeusedindoors,inanareafreefromdraftsandwideambienttemperatureswings.• TheUSBportonthefrontpanelisintendedtobeusedwithonlyaUSBFlashmemorydrive.NootherUSBdevicesshouldbe
insertedintotheUSBport.TheUSBflashmemorydriveshouldbeinstalledpriortodevicepower-up.• IntheeventthattheGenius2Checker/Calibratorisdropped,returntheunittothefactoryforre-calibration.

Section VI - Operational Procedure
ThefollowingprocedurewilldescribethestepsrequiredtooperatetheGenius2Checker/Calibrator.Inordertofacilitatefamiliaritywiththeproduct,itwouldbeadvisabletousethissectionofthemanualduringthecalibrationcheckofthefirstfewthermometers.Installation of USB Flash Drive (Optional) InstallaUSBflashdriveintotheUSBportlocatedonthefrontpanelifareportfilewrittentotheUSBflashdriveisdesired.IftheUSBflashdriveisinstalledafterperformingacalibrationcheck,anerrormessagemayoccurwhenattemptingtowritethereportfileiftheoperatordoesnotwaitfortheUSBflashdrivetocompleteinitialization.IftheGenius2Checker/Calibratorispoweredoff,allinternalmemory(notyetsavedtotheUSBflashdrive)willbelost.
Apply Power MakesuretheAC-adapterendofthepowermoduleispluggedintoagroundedoutlet.Connectthepowermoduletothefrontpanelpowerconnector.ApplypowertotheGenius2Checker/Calibratorbyusingthepowerswitchonthefrontpanel.
Start-up Screen ThefirstscreenontheLCDdisplayistheInitializationScreen,whichdisplaysthesoftwarerevisionanddateoftheGenius2Checker/Calibrator.Ifthereisaninternalproblemduringinitialization,anErrorscreenwillbedisplayed(SeeSectionVII).
Reminder Screen ThenextscreenontheLCDdisplayisaremindertolettheGenius2Checker/Calibratorwarm-upforatleast15minutesafterapplyingpower.Thiswilllettheinfraredblackbodytargetswarmuptothepropertemperatures.Toexitthisscreen,presstheencoderknob.
Main Menu TheMainMenuscreenisdisplayednext.Thisscreenhasfourmenuoptions:
CheckCalibration Preferences SetUser/SiteInformation SetTime/DateToenteranymenuoption,usetheencoderknobtoscrolloverandhighlightthedesiredmenuoption,thenpresstheencoderknob.
Preferences ThePreferencesmenuisusedtosetupthelanguageoption.PresstheencoderknobtoentertheLanguageSelectionscreen.
Language Selection TheLanguageSelectionscreenliststheavailablelanguagesfortheLCDscreentext.Toselectalanguage,scrollovertheselectionanditwillbehighlighted.PresstheencoderknobtocompletetheselectionandreturntotheMainMenuscreen.Theselectedlanguagewillbestoredinnon-volatilememoryandwillbeusednexttimetheunitispoweredon.
Set User/Site Information TheSetUser/SiteInformationscreenisusedtoentertheoperator’snameandtheorganizationand/orsiteinformation.Thisinformationwillbewrittentothetestreportfile.
Toentertheinformation,usetheencoderknobtoscrollthroughthealphabetforagivenletterpositionintheoperatornameorsiteinformation.Whenthecorrectletterisshown,presstheencoderknobtoselecttheletterandadvancetothenextletterposition.Toenteraspace,justpresstheencoderknobwhenaspaceorblankletterisshowninthatletterposition.Theusernamecanbeupto20letterslong.Usetheencoderknobtoscrolltotheorganizationfieldandenteranameforthesiteinasimilarmanner.Toexitthemenu,scrolltotheDONEtextandpresstheencoderknob.

Set Date and Time TheSetDateandTimescreenmenuoptionisusedtosetupthedateandtimethatisusedonthetestreport.Thetimeanddateareinternallystoredandautomaticallyupdatedwhentheunitispoweredup.
Toentertime,usetheencoderknobtoselectthehoursandminutes.Note:thehoursissetupusinga24hourclockformat,where1PMisenteredas13:00etc.Whenthevalueiscorrect,pushtheencoderknobtomovetothenextfieldofthetimeandthentothedatefield.ThedatefieldissetupusingaMMDDYYYYformat.Afterthelastfieldofthedateisentered,thenextencoderpushwillexitthismenuandreturntotheMainMenu.Note:thetimeanddateareshownatthebottomoftheMainMenu.
Check Calibration ThismenuoptionperformsthecalibrationcheckofaGenius2Thermometer,andifrequired,automaticallyrecalibratesthethermometerusingaseriesofstep-by-stepscreens.Beforeenteringthismenuoption,makesurethattherequiredequipmentlistedinSectionIVisavailable.Thisincludesacassettewithunused(new)probecovers.
Step 1: Warmupofinfraredblackbodytargets.Thisscreenisdisplayedwhilethetargetsarecheckedforpropertemperature.BoththeLowTargetandtheHighTargetarechecked,andwhentheyareatthecorrecttemperature,thescreenwillchangeto“OK”foreachtarget.Thereisaprompttopresstheencoderknobtocontinuetothenextscreen.Ifeithertargetcannotreachthecorrecttemperature,anErrormessagescreenwillbedisplayed.Ifthishappens,checktobesuretheGenius2Checker/Calibratoriswithinthecorrectambient(room)temperaturerange,andhasbeengivenatleast15minutesofwarmuptimesincepowerwasswitchedon.
Step 2: InspecttheGenius2Thermometerthatwillbetested.Ensurethatthethermometerlensisnotscratchedandisfreefromearwaxand/orothercontaminants.Ifthethermometerlensis“dirty”,cleanthelensaccordingtotheinstructionsintheGenius2Thermometeroperatingmanual.Oncethethermometerlensisclean,connecttheGenius2ThermometertotheChecker/CalibratorbypluggingtheroundendofthethermometerinterfacecableintotheroundconnectorsocketontheGenius2Checker/Calibratorfrontpanel(refertoFigure3).OpenthebatterydoorofthethermometerbyusingasmallPhillipsscrewdriver.Removethebatteriesandsetaside.Connecttheotherendofthethermometerprobecableintothebatterycompartment,makingsuretheconnector“snaps”intoplacesecurely.RefertoFigure2inSectionV.
Note: Anewprobecovermustbeusedpriortoeverytargetinsertion.Fingeroilsonpreviouslyusedprobecoversorre-usedprobecoversthathavebeenheatedbyGenius2Checker/Calibratortargetcancauseerroneousreadingswhichmayresultinafailedcalibrationcheckorrecalibration.Therefore,itisextremelyimportantthatanewprobecoverisusedeachtime.
Step 3: Presstheencoderknobtocontinue,theninstallanewGenius2probecoverontotheGenius2Thermometer.Makesuretouseacoverthatisheldinthecassette.Oncethecoverisonthethermometer,donotpointtheprobetipatanyobject,includinghands,fingersorLCDdisplay,asthiswillcauseaninaccuratetemperaturereading.Inspecttheprobecovertomakesureitisfullyseated(nospacebetweenthecoverandthetipbase)andnoholes,tears,orwrinklesarepresentintheplasticfilm.Whenthecoverison,inserttheprobetipintotheLowtemperaturetarget,whichwillhaveablinkingLEDindicatornexttoit.Makesurethattheprobetipisfullyinsertedintothetargetwell.RefertoFigure3forproperinsertion.Inordertoavoidatime-outerror,insertthecoveredprobetipintothetargetwithin60secondsfromthetimetheencoderknobispressed.

Step 4: Theinsertionoftheprobetipintothetargetwillautomaticallybedetectedandthescreendisplaywillchangeto“PressGenius2Thermometerscanbutton.”PressthescanbuttonontheGenius2ThermometerwhileitisinsertedintotheLowtemperaturetarget.TheGenius2Thermometerwilloutput3shortbeepsasittakesthetemperatureoftheblackbodytarget.Afterthetemperatureistaken,thenextscreenwilldisplay.
Step 5: WithdrawthethermometerfromtheLowtemperaturetargetandejecttheprobecover.Thescreendisplaywillchangeto“InstallanewprobecoverandinsertprobeintotheHightarget.”Again,useanewGenius2probecoverfromthecassetteandbecarefulnottopointtheprobetipatanyobject,includinghands,fingersorLCDdisplay.Inspecttheprobecoverstomakesureitisfullyseated(nospacebetweenthecoverandthetipbase)andnoholes,tears,orwrinklesarepresentintheplasticfilm.Whenthecoverison,inserttheprobetipintotheHightemperaturetarget,whichwillhaveablinkingLEDindicatornexttoit.Makesurethattheprobetipisfullyinsertedintothetargetwell.
Step 6: TheinsertionoftheprobetipintotheHightargetwillautomaticallybedetectedandthescreendisplaywillchangeto“PressGenius2Thermometerscanbutton.”PressthescanbuttonontheGenius2ThermometerwhileitisinsertedintotheHightemperaturetarget.TheGenius2Thermometerwilloutput3shortbeepsasittakesthetemperatureoftheblackbodytarget.Afterthetemperatureistaken,thenextscreenwilldisplay.Step 7: IftheGenius2thermometeriswithinspecifiedaccuracylimits,aResultsscreenwillbedisplayedshowingthethermometerserialnumberalongwithanindicationthatthethermometerpassedcalibrationcheck.IftheGenius2thermometerisfoundtobeoutsidethespecifiedaccuracylimits,thedisplaywillindicatetotheuserthattheGenius2Checker/CalibratorisenteringintoacalibrationsequencethatrequirestheusertorepeatSteps3through6threemoretimesinordertogatherrecalibrationdata.FollowingthelastpassthroughSteps3through6,theGenius2Checker/CalibratorwillattempttorecalibratetheGenius2thermometer.Iftherecalibrationissuccessful,aResultsscreenwillbedisplayedshowingthethermometerserialnumberalongwithanindicationthatthethermometerpassedcalibration.Iftherecalibrationisunsuccessfulorthethermometerisunabletobecalibrated,aResultsscreenwillbedisplayedshowingthethermometerserialnumberalongwithanindicationthatthethermometerfailedcalibration.

Step 8: Afterthepass/failResultsscreenhasbeendisplayed,presstheencoderknobtodisplayasecondResultsscreencontainingthetargettemperatures,theGenius2readings,andthetargetversusthermometervariances.Step 9: Thenextscreenwilldisplay“WritereporttoUSBflashdrive?”anddisplayYesandNobelow.Ifareportisdesired,insertaflashdriveintothefrontpanelUSBport.Note:allowabout30secondsafterinsertionfortheUSBflashdrivetoinitialize.UsetheencoderknobtoscrolltoeitherYesorNoandpresstheencoderknobtomakeaselection.IfNoisselected,thescreenreturnstotheMainMenu.IfYesisselected,areportiswrittentotheUSBflashdrive,usingthethermometerserialnumberforfilenameand.TXTasthefileextension.Thefilecontainsthetestresultsaswellasotherinformationsuchasserialnumber,date,time,username,andorganization.ThisfileisasimpleASCIItextfileandisonlyavailableinEnglish.ThisfilecanbereadbyMicrosoftWindows®operatingsystemandMicrosoftWindows®notepadandsenttoaprinter.Afterthefileiswritten,thedisplaywillshow“Pushknobtocontinue.”PresstheencoderknobtoreturntotheMainMenu.Step 10: Aftercompletingacalibrationcheck/recalibration,removetheprobeconnectorfromthebatterycompartment,usingarockingmotiontofreetheconnector.Thenreinstallthe3AAAbatteries,observingtheproperpolarityorientation.Finally,reinstallthebatterycompartmentcoverandtightenthescrew.Step 11: RemoveUSBflashdrivebeforeclosingthelidofthecase.ThelidshouldbeclosedwhentheGenius2Checker/Calibratorisnotinuse.
Section VII - Error Messages
Theerrormessageswillhaveanumberassociatedwiththem,suchasError1,etc.Thefollowingisanexplanationoftheerrors:
Error 1: Internal Error ThiserrorisanindicationofaproblemwithintheGenius2Checker/Calibrator.Ifthiserrorpersistsaftercyclingpoweroffandbackon,returntheunitforfactoryservicing.
Error 2: Unable to communicate with Genius 2 Thermometer. ThiserrorisanindicationofeitheralackofcommunicationoramiscommunicationbetweentheGenius2ThermometerandtheGenius2Checker/Calibrator.Checkbothendsofthethermometerprobecable,especiallytheendthatconnectsinsidethebatterycompartment.Thepinsinthethermometerprobecablecanlosespringactioniftheyarebentordamaged.Afterinspectingtheprobecable,re-attemptthecalibrationcheck.Iftheproblempersists,tryadifferentGenius2Thermometer,ifavailable.Ifthisdoesnotresolvetheproblem,returntheunitforfactoryservicing,alongwiththethermometercableandtheGenius2Thermometerthatindicatedthiserror.
Error 3: TimeoutThiserrorisanindicationthattheoperatortooktoolongtoperformanoperation.ThiserrormightbeseenwhenconnectingtotheGenius2Thermometer,orwhileinstallingaprobecoveronthethermometer.Thetimeoutissetforoneminute.Tryrepeatingtheoperationthatgavethiserror.
Error 4: Target Out of Range Thiserrorisanindicationthatoneoftheblackbodytargetsisnotwithintherangeoftemperatureallowed.Checkthattheunitisbeingoperatedwithintheallowedambienttemperatureoperatingrange.RefertoSectionVIII.Ifoperatingwithinthespecifiedambientconditionsdoesnoteliminatetheerror,theblackbodytarget(s)maybedamaged.Returntheunitforfactoryservicing.
Error 5: USB Flash Drive Write Error ThiserrorisanindicationofaproblemwhenwritingthereportfiletoaUSBflashdrive.CheckthatthewriteprotectswitchontheUSBdriveisinthe“off”position.Makesurethatthereissufficientfreespaceonthedrive,andthatsecurityorencryptionfeaturesarenotinuse.
