Conditioning the Moisture Analyzer Moistureintheaircancondenseon
thesurfacesofacoldmoistureanalyzerwheneveritisbroughtintoasubstan-tiallywarmerplace.Ontransferingthemoistureanalyzertoawarmerarea,makesuretoconditionitforabout2hoursatroomtemperature(un-pluggedfrompower).Afterwards,ifyoukeepthemoistureanalyzerconnectedtoACpower,thecontinuouspositivedifferenceintemperaturebetweentheinsideofthemoistureanalyzerandtheoutsidewillpracticallyruleouttheeffectsofmoisturecondensation.

Material Themoistureofamaterialisoften
mistakenlyequatedtoitswatercontent.Infact,themoistureofamaterialincludesallofthevolatilecomponentswhichareemittedwhenthesampleisheated,irrespectiveofthetypeofmaterial.Amongsuchvolatilesubstanc-esare:
– water– fats– oils– alcohols– organicsolvents– flavorings– volatilecomponents,products
ofdecomposition(whenasampleisoverheated)
Therearemanymethodsfordeter-miningthemoisturecontentofasub-stance.Thesemethodscanbedividedintotwocategories:
Whenabsolutemethodsareused,themoisturecontentisdetermineddirectly(forexample,asaweightlossregisteredduringthedryingroutine).Thesemethodsincludeovendrying,infrareddryingandmicrowavedrying.Allthreeofthesemethodsarethermo-gravimetric.
Whendeductivemethodsareused,themoisturecontentisdeterminedindi-rectly.Aphysicalpropertyrelatedtothemoistureinthesubstanceismeasured(e.g.,absorptionofelectromagneticrays).ThesemethodsincludeKarl-Fischertitration,infraredspectroscopy,microwavespectroscopy,etc.
Thermogravimetryistheprocessofdeterminingthelossofmassthatoccurswhenasubstanceisheated.Inthisprocess,thesampleisweighedbeforeandafterbeingheated,andthedifferencebetweenthetwoweightsdeterminediscalculated.
Inaconventionaldryingoven,circulatinghotairwarmsthesamplefromtheoutsideinwards.Efficiencyislostduringdryingbecauseasthemoistureevaporates,itcoolsthesamplesurface.
Bycontrast,infraredrays(IRrays)penetrateasamplewithoutbeingimpeded.Havingreachedtheinteriorofasample,theyareconvertedintoheatenergy.

Incorrectapplicationofasample
Whenpreparingsubstancesformeasurement,donotuseprocessesthatgenerateheat,astheheatgeneratedmayresultinalossofmoisturepriortothemeasurement.
PerforminitialanalysisofanewsubstancetotesthowtheIRraysareabsorbedbythesampleandconvertedintoheat.Aprintoutoftheinter-mediatevaluesofthedryingprocessprovidesyouwiththisinformationatanearlystage.
Experiencehasshownthatthetem-peraturesettingselectedforinfrareddryingisusuallylowerthanthetemperaturesettingusedwhenworkingwithadryingoven.
Inmanycases,thefullyautomaticshutoffmodewillmeetyourrequire-ments.Ifthefinalresultishigherorlowerthanexpected,tryvaryingthetemperaturesettingbeforeresortingtoadifferentshutoffparameter.
Whenanalyzingthesamplesthatlosetheirmoistureonlyveryslowlyorwhenoperatingacoldmoistureanalyzer,thefullyautomaticmodemayendthedryingroutinetooearlysincenoana-lyzableprogressinthedryingroutinecanbedetected.Inthiscase,preheatthemoistureanalyzerfor2–3minutesbeforestartingthedryingroutine,orselectadifferentshutoffparameter.
