OPENING at Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema in September

OPENS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15

Blurred Lines: Inside the Art WorldD: Barry Avrich | Canada | 2017 | 80 min

This Hot Docs hit is an all-access pass into the contemporary art world. Modern art pieces from established names can go for what seems like absurd amounts of money, accessible only to the elite. Assessing the value of a work of art in both cultural and monetary terms is tricky territory that calls into question what we view and accept as art to begin with and how we commodify said value in our capitalist society. Filmmaker Barry Avrich takes you around the globe to auctions, museums, art openings and talks to experts and the artists themselves—including Marina Abramovic and Julian Schnabel—about this unregulated economic system and what it reveals.

OPENS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8

Hare Krishna! The Mantra, The Movement and The Swami Who Started It AllD: Jean Griesser, John Griesser | USA | 2017 | 90 min

A teacher and visionary whose powerful words started a global movement, meet the 70-year old Swami who came to New York from India in 1965, bearing a message of peace. Prabhupada brought the meditative mantra of Hare Krishna and shared that the key to happiness, love and freedom was to understand yourself. Soon, he had countless followers, most famously George Harrison, who integrated the Hare Krishna chant into “My Sweet Lord.” As the movement grew, so did its resistance and devotees came under threat but it was already too strong. Hare Krishna! gives you the chance to meet the Swami who started it all.

OPENS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1

REM: Rem Koolhaas DocumentaryD: Tomas Koolhaas | USA | 2016 | 75 min

Renowned Dutch architectural thinker and designer Rem Koolhaas is a singular genius with an astounding body of work. In line with his principles of dynamism, this unique documentary conveys the human experience of architecture as an interactive relationship that shifts and evolves, emphasizing moving camera footage to properly explore space. Directed by his son Tomas, REM provides full access to Koolhaas’ process and philosophy. His most revered accomplishments—the Seattle Central Library, the CCTV headquarters in Beijing, De Rotterdam in the eponymous city and the Casa da Musica in Porto—are all explored here in rich detail with beautiful cinematography.

OPENS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1

Food EvolutionD: Scott Hamilton Kennedy | USA | 2016 | 92 min

How will we feed ourselves in the future? In this thought-provoking doc, science superstar Neil deGrasse Tyson hosts a balanced and vital conversation about GMOs and food security. Food Evolution is an insightful examination of the different sides of the argument that makes the case for GMOs as our hope for the future. Some claim genetically modified foods have negative impacts on our health, while others say it’s our only chance at feeding the world’s population and both say they have the science to back it up. A slate of farmers and scientists weigh in with deGrasse Tyson, helping make sense of this vital debate.“ In a world desperate for safe, sustainable

food, G.M.O.s may well be a force for good.” - The New York Times

“ A valentine from a son to his father as well as a largely absorbing architecture documentary.” - The Hollywood Reporter

“ Explores the art world from a multitude of angles in this engaging and entertaining doc.” - POV Magazine

“ Fittingly devotional tribute to Srila Prabhupada, who traveled from Calcutta to New York and spearheaded a revolution.” - Los Angeles Times

The Last Dalai Lama?D: Mickey Lemle | USA | 2016 | 82 min

Now in his 80s, the Dalai Lama is dealing with mortality but it doesn’t seem to concern him much. This inspiring documentary looks at the life of the Dalai Lama and focuses on his thoughts and reflections looking back and forward. The big question everyone is asking: will the Dalai Lama be reincarnated again? He isn’t so sure. The Last Dalai Lama? also features interviews with those who admire him, including Philip Glass (who composes the film’s score with Tenzin Choegyal). Scenes of the Dalai Lama visiting young students demonstrate he’s still youthful himself and not done spreading the word of peace.

Meanwhile, independent engineers are working on their own towards the same results, to harness nuclear fusion as a sustainable solution. Let There Be Light gives you insider access to this epic science experiment as some of the world’s greatest minds strive to make a monumental breakthrough.
