The International Frumkin Symposia were orga- nized on the initiative of Academician Vladimir Evgen'evich Kazarinov, a pupil and the successor of Aleksandr Naumovich. The 1st Frumkin Symposium was held in 1979. In 1988, the Symposium became international. Now we open the 8th International Frumkin Symposium. I am glad to note that many young people take part in the symposium. Within the frames of the sympo- sium, a competition of the studies accomplished by young scientists is organized. All the participants of this competition are invited to make reports at the sympo- sium. Three of them, the winners, M.R. Erenburg (Frumkin Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electro- chemistry, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow), N.G. Bukhan'ko (Moscow State University), and E.V. Chentsova (Saratov State Technical University, Engel’s Technological Institute) will make their oral lectures at the symposium. The name of Academician Frumkin is still alive and famous. Within the frames of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Frumkin Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry was organized. The Russian Academy of Sciences publishes journal Electrochemis- try, which was organized on the initiative of Frumkin. It should be noted that its English version, the Russian Journal of Electrochemistry , is issued simultaneously. At the Moscow State University, a department of elec- trochemistry, which was founded by Frumkin, success- fully works. The International Society of Electrochem- istry has instituted the Honorable Frumkin Medal to be awarded for outstanding studies in the field of funda- mental electrochemistry. I am happy to note that the winner of this medal, Professor L.I. Krishtalik (Russia) will deliver a plenary lecture at our symposium. Unfor- tunately, at the last moment we have learnt that another winner of the Frumkin Medal, Professor S. Trasatti (Italy) cannot take part in this symposium. The participants of the 8th International Frumkin Symposium came from 24 countries. More than three hundred lectures and reports are to be presented at the symposium. This means that the name of Aleksandr Naumovich Frumkin is still highly acknowledged in the modern electrochemical community. Opening of the 8th International Frumkin Symposium B. M.
