Dear participants of the Frumkin International Sym-posium!

This year, we celebrate a jubilee, the 110th birthdayof Academician Aleksandr Naumovich Frumkin. Aca-demician A.N. Frumkin was an outstanding scientisthighly acknowledged all over the world. He foundedhis school of electrochemistry. The scientific heritagehe left still has a great influence on the development ofelectrochemistry all over the world.

The International Frumkin Symposia were orga-nized on the initiative of Academician VladimirEvgen'evich Kazarinov, a pupil and the successor ofAleksandr Naumovich. The 1st Frumkin Symposiumwas held in 1979. In 1988, the Symposium becameinternational. Now we open the 8th InternationalFrumkin Symposium.

I am glad to note that many young people take partin the symposium. Within the frames of the sympo-sium, a competition of the studies accomplished byyoung scientists is organized. All the participants of thiscompetition are invited to make reports at the sympo-sium. Three of them, the winners, M.R. Erenburg(Frumkin Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electro-chemistry, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow),N.G. Bukhan'ko (Moscow State University), andE.V. Chentsova (Saratov State Technical University,

Engel’s Technological Institute) will make their orallectures at the symposium.

The name of Academician Frumkin is still alive andfamous. Within the frames of the Russian Academy ofSciences, the Frumkin Institute of Physical Chemistryand Electrochemistry was organized. The RussianAcademy of Sciences publishes journal

Electrochemis-try,

which was organized on the initiative of Frumkin.It should be noted that its English version, the

RussianJournal of Electrochemistry

, is issued simultaneously.At the Moscow State University, a department of elec-trochemistry, which was founded by Frumkin, success-fully works. The International Society of Electrochem-istry has instituted the Honorable Frumkin Medal to beawarded for outstanding studies in the field of funda-mental electrochemistry. I am happy to note that thewinner of this medal, Professor L.I. Krishtalik (Russia)will deliver a plenary lecture at our symposium. Unfor-tunately, at the last moment we have learnt that anotherwinner of the Frumkin Medal, Professor S. Trasatti(Italy) cannot take part in this symposium.

The participants of the 8th International FrumkinSymposium came from 24 countries. More than threehundred lectures and reports are to be presented at thesymposium. This means that the name of AleksandrNaumovich Frumkin is still highly acknowledged in themodern electrochemical community.
