First Editon | Spring 2012 To begin, select your colour scheme; Easter naturally brings plenty of pastels to choose from. Pick one or two colours and then take these into every area of your home, beginning right at the front door. Swap out your winter wreath with one that contains silk tulips - make your own, or choose one of the many ready-made ones available in your neighbourhood home décor store. Play up your colours on fingertip towels in your powder room, tea towels in the kitchen, candles and a centerpiece on your dining room table. Go a step further and place collections of hand painted eggs in glass bowls or vases throughout your home (hint: you can buy these too!). Add armloads of fresh tulips and hydrangeas throughout your home to complete the look. Voila! You are ready to greet the Easter Bunny in sensational style! Start by thinking about the purpose of the space. What do youwant it to be used for?” asks Glazier. “Form always has to followfunction. Once you’ve decided that, the rest is as easy as followingsome simple rules.”

The “rules” which Glazier refers to are actually easy ways to makesmall spaces look larger using colour, furniture arranging andlighting - all to give the illusion of space.

ColourDark colours tend to absorb light and makespaces look smaller. So stick to lighter tones, andreserve darker colours for borders or trim.Monochromatic is key, suggests Glazier. Pick atone that speaks to you, and provide easy, visualtransitions by going shades darker and lighter.

For maximum effects, even try to keep fabrics and windowtreatments within your chosen palette.

FurnitureMulti function furniture (achest used as a coffee table orbeds with drawers for storage)are a clever way to make themost of your space. Stick toclean lines and avoidoverstuffed pieces. Also stayaway from tall furniture thatvisually lowers the ceiling. Extendable dining tables and nestingtables can be tucked away when not in use. Glass tables give theappearance of space, letting light travel through.

LightingNatural light helps open a room up, so ifit’s available, make sure it shines throughfilmy or gauzy window treatments. Potlights are key, as their light is evenlydispersed so they don’t create shadows;and are not limited by furnitureplacement.

AccentsDial up the drama with patterns(for best results, mix a pattern witha solid in one of the colours fromthat pattern), by adding an accentcolour on a feature wall, hangingspectacular artwork 10”- 12” abovethe sofa back (opt for one pieceinstead of a collection of smallerones), or using a gorgeous rug tohelp anchor your furniture anddrawing the eye down.
