Kids and teens are challenged to keep track of the days they spend reading to earn some great prizes! Join us on June 6 for the Kick-off Party! See pages 6-7 for lots of fun programs to keep your little ones busy this summer.

Something Old, Something NewThis summer the Library celebrates its 125th Anniversary. Our Summer Challenge invites you to participate in classic library experiences and branch out into some new library adventures. Read a good book, attend a program, or say “hi” at the Fourth of July Parade. You can also sample streaming music and movies with Hoopla and Kanopy or sign up for Your Top 10 and have holds automatically placed on your favorite authors’ new releases. Stop by the Adult Services Desk for a challenge card.

Bring family, friends, neighbors, and a picnic dinner to Memorial Hall Lawn for some summertime fun! Sit back, relax, and enjoy Sunnyside Up, a bluegrass band that incorporates elements of jazz, rock, and traditional music to create an energetic

acoustic show. Refreshing summer drinks and treats will be provided. Register at the Library, over the phone, or online.

About the Sponsor: The Friends of the Hinsdale Public Library help to maintain and improve the quality of life in Hinsdale by enhancing the Library’s work. Over the years they’ve sponsored many Library initiatives, had a wonderful time hosting speakers, helped provide free children’s books at the Fourth of July Parade, and funded

HPL’s 125th AnniversaryGrover Cleveland was president, a loaf of bread cost seven cents, the World’s Fair was in town, and Hinsdale Public Library was opening its doors for the first time as a tax-supported library. The year was 1893, and now, 125 years later, the Library is celebrating over a century of service to the community with exciting programs and giveaways. Hinsdale Alum Studies How Kids View Rule Breakers June 18–23

James Dunlea, Hinsdale native and Psychology doctoral candidate at Columbia University, will be conducting research at the Library that investigates how children perceive those who commit moral transgressions. Children ages 6-8 (with their caregivers) are invited to participate in a 10-15 minute research study. For more info, or to register your child, contact Ridgeway Burns at [email protected].

Bad Actions, or Bad People: Children’s and Adults’ Explanations for IncarcerationWednesday, June 20, 7:00 p.m.– 8:00 p.m.

James Dunlea will discuss his research on moral cognition, specifically on how children and adults perceive people who are incarcerated. An informal Q & A session will follow James’ presentation. This discussion is intended for adults.

Helen O’Neill ScholarshipCongratulations to library shelver and scholarship winner Hinsdale Central High School senior Jenna Friedman. Jenna has been a page at the Library since February 2017. She will attend Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY to study Computer Science.

Helen O’Neill was a lifelong Hinsdale resident and Head Librarian from 1963 to 1978. In 1999, donations made to the Library to honor Ms. O’Neill’s memory were combined to establish the Helen O’Neill Scholarship Fund. From this fund and a matching contribution from the Friends of the Hinsdale Public Library, a college scholarship is awarded each year to a library page.
