    discussion/workshop will invite

    participants to think about thesteps students, here at Berkeleyand across the UC, could take to

    move our student associationstowards a 'union' model, and

    whether such a structural shift isworth the effort of existing

    informal student movements.

    10:30am Lessons from the

    Chilean StudentMovement

    Katy Fox-

    We will examine how Chilean

    students were able to organize amass movement for public

    education that brought millions outinto the streets and resulted in a

    seven month long student strike. Inthe second half of the workshop,

    we will consider the implicationsof the Chilean movement for

    student organizing in California.

    gender, sexualities, race and space

    in forming alliances necessary toopen up, sustain, and bringforward the movement as a site of

    political action, but also ofstruggle and transformation,

    together.

    Gabriel Hetland An introduction to participatorydemocracy, and specifically

    participatory budgeting. I willbriefly speak about participatory

    budgeting in Venezuela where I'vedone research, and then discuss

    ongoing efforts to bring it toOakland, and possibly to the

    academic workers union and/or the

    University of California.
