Eastside Transit and HOV Project

APRIL 2018

Major improvements on the Eastside include: • Transit/HOV lanes in both directions through the Eastside corridor.  • Wider, safer shoulders. • Transit stops in the median at Evergreen Point Road and 92nd Avenue Northeast.• Direct-access ramp to and from 108th Avenue Northeast for carpools and transit. • Regional bicycle and pedestrian path with connections to local trails.

Environmental and community enhancements include: • Wider, fish-friendly culverts.  • Noise-reduction structures. • Stormwater-drainage system and natural-filtration sites.• New lids at Evergreen Point Road, 84th Avenue Northeast and 92nd Avenue Northeast.

The Evergreen Point Road lid in Medina provides community open space and access to highway-level regional transit stops (pictured lower left).

Bus riders board a bus at one of the Eastside's new median transit stops.

Two bicyclists and a walker cross paths on thefloating bridge’s 14-foot-wide shared-use trail.

• A safer floating bridge, built to withstand a 100-year windstorm, and fixed approaches built to modern earthquake standards.• A 14-foot-wide bicycle/pedestrian path on the north side of the new bridge. • The addition of a transit/HOV lane in both directions as well as shoulders that allow disabled vehicles to safely move out of active traffic.

West Approach Bridge North Project

Major improvements of the West Approach Bridge North Project include: • A new, seismically sound structure designed to current earthquake standards. • The first of two, side-by-side west approach bridges with transit/HOV lanes and shoulders for disabled vehicles. • Completion of the new SR 520 Trail across Lake Washington to Montlake. • Environmental improvements such as a new Arboretum Loop Trail and wetland creation at the Union Bay Natural Area.

Replacing vulnerable bridge structures

The existing Portage Bay Bridge and old west approach bridge sit on hollow columns built in the 1960s that are at risk of structural failure during an earthquake.

Columns built for the new West Approach Bridge North (WABN) structure are significantly stronger and better designed to withstand a seismic event.

SR 520 Diversity and Inclusion ProgramWSDOT has established an agency-wide voluntary goal of 26 percent on state-funded projects, to encourage participation and inclusion of minority, small, veterans, and womens business enterprises (MSVWBEs).

To date, the SR 520 Program has utilized 100 MSVWBE and DBE firms in its design and construction work totaling more than $195 million.

The Montlake Phase project contract includes voluntary goals for MSVWBE participation. The future Montlake Phase design-builder is encouraged to utilize MSVWBEs.
