Open Studios Cornwall is a celebration of Cornwall’s wealth of creative talent, and the following information will help you to enjoy that talent to the full. Each venue is clearly indicated by a Cornwall Open Studios sign – so look out for the orange O as you travel around. This catalogue is divided into West, Mid and North/East. Within each section artists are ordered geographically and then alphabetically. If you plan to visit a particular place like Falmouth or St Ives, you can look up the artists exhibiting in that area. If you intend to visit a particular artist, you can find out who else is in their neighbourhood.

Remember, opening times vary and not all participants exhibit for the whole week, so check before you visit. Many are happy to accept commissions. It is important to ensure that what is agreed is confirmed in writing. Pick up the artist’s information card, so that you can contact them again if you want to add to your collection of their work.

Most exhibitors will be happy to take a deposit to reserve an artwork and make arrangements for you to collect it at a convenient time. Please ensure that you obtain a receipt.

Feedback is essential for the future development of Cornwall Open Studios. The artists will ask you to complete a feedback questionnaire. Completing it gives you the chance to win a bottle of Camel Valley 'Cornwall' Brut!

Most importantly – please don’t forget your cheque book! Most exhibitors are not able to take payment by credit card – but cash will do nicely, thank you!

There is nowhere like Cornwall. Fact. The coastline is incomparable. So is the extraordinary range and vitality of its art. In every part of Cornwall there is a great coastline. In every part of Cornwall you find remarkable artists.

I first came on holiday here in 1950, and since 1970 we have never missed a year. Well, we missed one and it didn’t feel right. Cornwall does something to us. It draws us back. It lifts us, like the surge of a wave, and inspires us. Yes, art is very hard work – all creative things are – and you have to keep going, and you often need the support of friends, but you cannot keep going without the inspiration.

In the early 1990s I absorbed myself in that sense of Cornish place and Cornish community. And I needed all the Cornish inspiration I could find. I spent three years researching (and partly imagining) a true story set in Lamorna just before the First World War. As well as climbing the rocks and the steep footpaths, I made mental sketches and came to feel a bit of what a particular group of Cornish artists must have felt a hundred years ago. All that became my 1995 novel 'Summer in February', now the film, shot on location in Cornwall and to be released this June.

A hundred years after my novel is set, the Open Studios Cornwall brings artists

and art lovers together in exactly the way we need. It is a remarkable open event, conceived in an open hearted spirit; it involves sharing studios, homes and ideas. Although artists and writers are strong individuals – they have to be – and sometimes loners, we also greatly value coming together, learning from each other and being with kindred spirits.

As an event there is nothing like Open Studios Cornwall.

Printmaking Without a Press

Explore the many expressions achievable from printmaking without a press, using a range of monoprinting techniques, such as bold stencil work, delicate pencil or brushlike wiping. Printmaking through monoprinting is a direct and less technical process than relief and intaglio allowing you be creative without much equipment in an easier, more immediate way.

Machine Embroidered Card and Pictures

Use free machining and a variety of fabrics and threads to create lovely cards and pictures. Experiment with a selection of machine stitches and embellish with some hand embroidery.

Things to bring with you Sewing machine and manual, darning foot, embroidery ring, threads and basic sewing kit.

The Owl in the Art Tree

Create a piece of felt in your own design/ choice of style. Lots of inspiration available in the gardens of the studio. Art books and reference material aplenty to work from. Bind a small 3 inch square book with what you have made.

Relief Printmaking Without a Press

By arrangement 10am–4pm £50 per day (includes equipment)

Relief printmaking is the oldest form of printmaking and can be easily continued at home without a press. Linocuts work well using simple bold imagery and are ideal for homemade greetings cards, but have the potential for highly complex artist's prints. All partcipants will be able to take home an original print of their own.

The Lizard Peninsula clifftops are amazing and stunning. The sky is enormous. A multitude of sandy beaches and coves offer potential for remarkable adventures and discoveries as nature reveals and divulges some of her innermost secrets.

It is from this standpoint that I draw inspiration, in an environment that allows me so much mental and physical space. I find clarity in this environment, amongst the rocks the sand and sea. It is a place to stop and be still. A place to just ‘be’.

Part of my working day is often spent walking the clifftops and beaches. Whether the day offers great drama and movement, or extreme calm and stillness, the experiences I have there, open the way, and allow me a foundation from which to paint.

Directions: The Gallery (with Jane’s studio and Tea Garden behind) is on the main B3071 Penzance to St Just road,opposite The Star pub. The gallery is accessible to wheelchairs (one step) but there are several steps to the studio and garden.

I design and make silver jewellery using traditional techniques, many of which have been around for thousands of years. My designs are inspired by England's history of exploration and discovery. All paintings have a large area of sky in them, this I believe sets the tone of the paintings. I usually work on small canvases with large brushes in this respect I have been influenced by Howard Hodgkin. I do not believe that art should be exclusive or expensive hence you will find the bulk of my work available in the region of £30.

I hand paint plants and birds, and use coloured slips to decorate my pots and bowls, creating delicate images. Simple bird forms are cast in porcelain and hung from wire or mounted on aluminium rods. Coloured stains highlight intricate detail of wild flowers pressed into hollow porcelain pebbles.

Wheel thrown, extruded and hand built ceramics often heavily modified and usually without any pre planning. Jugs are probably my favourite forms and the sculptural quality often outweighs functionality. I am now starting to experiment with wood, making small pieces of furniture.

What Inspires Me...Jane Winton

I have been like a magpie all my life surrounding myself with things that ignite my imagination and please my eye. They are a large part of what inspires my work and many of my ideas come from the old toys, ephemera and books, vintage packaging, textiles, china and many other things I have collected over the years and also our dogs, cats, chickens and the wildlife that lives in and around our home on the edge of the Roseland Peninsula.

My background is in children’s book illustration and my paintings still tell little stories that I make up while out walking the dog. Little hills here, a row of round trees there, huge buds on the end of spindly twigs and apples and cherries

bright against green leaves are all noted for future use in my paintings.

There are so many beautiful places in Cornwall and we are very lucky to live on the Roseland where we can get lots of walking in stunning locations. Trewithen Gardens and grounds are just around the corner and a regular haunt. Ruan Quay near Ruan Lanihorne is beautiful and great for spotting marsh and water birds. Walking from Gerrans past Rosteague to Towan Beach and back along the coastpath to Portscatho a firm favourite, Messack Point with its giant Scots Pines and views of Carrick Roads and over to St Just in Roseland with its famous church and almost garden –like grounds are regularly visited. Truro Museum is always worth a visit for its collections of near enough everything from typewriters to Egyptian mummies!

Drawing from observation is the foundation of Victoria’s practice. She draws primarily from the human figure. Her medium is mixed from charcoal and pencil to monoprinting with oil-based ink. Prices range from £3–£150. Victoria’s studio is located in Potager Gardens where there is a gorgeous, glasshouse café serving home-made lunches, cakes and tea.

Wandering the Cornish coast painting, drawing and writing, I collect insects, shells, birds wings, skulls, stones, seed heads, bones and driftwood. With these and my words I create intimate and precious poems. Prints, paintings, drawings and sculpture to view and buy.

I work with natural and found materials in a variety of media. My current paintings are created from the earth and rock pigments I collect from the beaches in and around Falmouth. These materials are carefully recycled, reformed and refined to represent the fragility and understated beauty of the Cornish coastal ecosystem.

Directions: My studio is in a shop by the clock tower. There is a free car park on Permarin Road. From the direction of Falmouth go along Commercial Road, turn left up St Gluvias Street and right onto Permarin Road. There is also a train station and bus service.

Celebrating 10 years of Open Studios

For hundreds of years artists have been DRAWN to the Tamar Valley for inspiration.DRAWN TO THE VALLEY Artists of the Tamar Valley are celebrating 10 years of living, working and opening our studios to visitors. This year we are aiming to arrange 10 events to celebrate 10 years. We are delighted to have members exhibiting in this year’s Cornwall Open Studios event.

Three of this year’s events will be:• The Garden House, near Yelverton 19th August-22nd September• Annual Summer Exhibition at Tavistock Town Hall 5th-11th August• Open Studios event 31st August- 8th September.

85North and East Cornwall is an area that sometimes gets overlooked. This hidden area of unspoilt scenery is a well kept secret – it’s full of the most dramatic moors and Atlantic beaches but is also home to the gentle rock colours of the south coast.

The Tamar Valley, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is home to ‘Drawn to the Valley’ a strong community of artists working in all disciplines, now recognised as a new school of art. For those who don’t usually venture to this part of Cornwall come and

share our secret and see for yourselves during Open Studios Cornwall 2013.

My inspiration as a landscape artist comes from walks over Bodmin Moor, working on Talland Bay with my students and clambering down the cliffs at Whitsand Bay. I also get inspired by words, prose and poetry and combine visual references to the landscape within those written connections. I’m drawn to sea charts and the abstract qualities of depth lines and chart symbols and the poetic rhythmic words of the shipping forecast.

I’d like to invite you to look at this part of Cornwall through my eyes. Whichever direction you go in, this part of Cornwall is different – it’s awe inspiring and truly spectacular, a real hidden delight. So allow plenty of time and come with friends and enjoy it as I do.

Work that explores the draw of the light, pattern and colour of the world around me. Paintings are mostly in mixed media on canvas, using acrylics, oil pastels, inks and collage. Photography can be part of the exploration process, developed in its own right as a medium, working with images through light and pattern.

Directions: From Pelynt on the B3359 take the lane by the Church for Lansallos/Polruan. Leaving the 30 mph area, go just down the lane almost to the bottom of the hill. The cottage is on the Left. Parking on drive (or by church, 5 mins walk). 2 steps to studio.

A love of colour and line leads to a range of traditional and modern art and patchwork designs, kits and patterns; also dolls and mannequins to intrigue the imagination. We are only a few miles from the Eden Project, so drop in and meet us before or after your visit there!

Directions: Lostwithiel can be found on the A390 main road. Go down main street then at the co-op turn right; carry on until the iron railway bridge; we are situated in the next to the last house with trees in the garden. Parking available.

I work in mixed media textiles combining hand printing, collage and machine embroidery mainly featuring fish and birds that are found around the picturesque village of Lerryn. I also work in Mosaic, often creating humorous figures using found and recycled materials.

Within my work I like to integrate materials to create large size images blending both mark making and paint together, use of old mattresses, wire, string and wax creating touchable sculptures. My textiles fabric books are of Memories of Life from found and already used cloth.
