Harvard and MIT have similar ideas for their MOOC.

They have combined their efforts into what they call

Edx. They want to offer classes that are controlled by

the universities and are taught by the universities

proffesors. Students can take classes and earn

certificates based on their performance. Their

primary goal, however, is to be available as aresource to their students. Another group known as

Coursera is making education free to all people, but

the issue is sustaining the programs.

Open-Source Versus Crowd-Sourced

Open-source urbanism and crowd-sourced urbanism

are a new phenomenon that are still being defined but

can work in tandem. Open-source urbanism is when

an element is capable of being used and adapted by

none professionals. The user however does need to

have a certain knowledge base in order to manipulate

the source. For instance, open coding systems can

be used and manipulated but, the user must

understand coding.Crowd-sourced urbanism however is design based on

feedback form crowds. They are given tools that allow

them to give impute on their environment or a product

that then allows designers to re-develop the

environment or product.

When the mass population has the ability to offer

feedback and the ability to manipulate their

environment, design will become a tool of the masses.
