Welcome to Open Learning

The course outlines in this brochure aim to help you to choose the appropriate Open Learning course for you.

Our students enjoy our courses for many different reasons: ♦ All adults of any age and any ability are eligible. ♦ Open Learning students have the freedom of working from home and organising

their study time to suit them. ♦ Courses are offered at three levels: Starter, Foundation and Certificate or Award

level, to accommodate all levels of ability. ♦ Single lessons for a course may be requested ♦ Students can build their own “tailor made” courses by choosing bite sized courses or

single lessons from selected courses (as shown). To constitute a course lessons picked must be from the same level of study and only be the required number for that level e.g. 6 at Award Level

♦ Lessons may now be submitted electronically to [email protected]

or posted to the Open Learning address in this brochure

♦ Lessons are available in different fonts, large print (large font grey scale on off white) or on coloured paper for those who have additional needs. Please ask when enrolling

♦ Students new to study can begin at Starter level. ♦ Mature adults who have not studied for some time use our courses as ‘back to study’

opportunities. ♦ Each student has a personal tutor who provides support, guidance and

encouragement as they progress through their course. The tutor will also grade assignments and give feedback on written work.

♦ These courses offer an opportunity to: • undertake serious study of the Bible • learn more about God, the Christian faith and Church tradition • gain insight into one's own personal faith experience • develop resources for practical ministry

♦ Some of the courses could be adapted for group study and provide a forum for

further discussion. ♦ Pictures used within brochure and study guides have been sourced from Microsoft

Word Clipart or are Salvation Army stock photographs

The Courses Bite Size Courses Open Learning is now starting to develop bite sized courses. These are short, single pieces of work that aim to introduce the student to a range of different topics. They are available at Award, Foundation and Starter levels. Starter Courses These are mainly in workbook form, and there are worksheets to be completed for each lesson. They are basic studies, suitable for students who don't have a comprehensive knowledge of the Bible, or who are not used to doing written studies. Students who are new Christians and who wish to learn about the Christian faith will find these courses helpful. Foundation Courses These courses require short pieces of written work. They give students basic information on their chosen subjects and aim to stimulate the student into further reading and study. Certificate Courses These courses provide an opportunity to study at a more in-depth level. Personal research as well as reading from set textbooks is encouraged. These courses are appropriate for students who are prepared to commit to study and to applying what they learn to their own personal spiritual experience. Award Level courses These courses aim to encourage and resource students for in - depth study. Each one has a set text book and additional reading is also suggested. Assignments vary and include, but are not limited to, writing essays. These courses also encourage students to explore how they can apply what they learn to their own lives.

QQuueessttiioonnss ssttuuddeennttss aasskk –– aanndd tthhee aannsswweerrss Q How can I get advice on which course to take or if I need help when I

receive my course materials? What do I do if I have problems obtaining text books?

A Contact Open Learning - details are given on the Enrolment Form and on page 1

of this brochure. Q The course fees are reasonably priced, but I can't afford the full cost. A The Salvation Army is a charity and no profit is made. The courses are

subsidised and tutors' fees are kept to a minimum. Fees may be paid in instalments by arrangement with the Open Learning Office.

Q What is the timescale for completing assignments? A No set assignment dates are given. However many students set their own

timetable and often send in lessons once a month. Q When will I find out who my tutor is? A When you receive your course materials. Tutors will send you a profile of

themselves and you will be asked to submit one of yourself so that your tutor can get to know you.

Q What if something prevents me from studying for a while? A Students may resume a course after a break in their studies. It is helpful if you

can let the Open Learning Office know if you are taking a break. Q What if I receive the course materials and, having looked at them, decide

that the course is not right for me? A If this happens, please contact the Open Learning office to discuss an alternative

course. You can then exchange the materials you received for a course that is better suited to your needs.
