For the next few weeks I will try to describe the Turnaround Program by using the discipline that was given to me. I want all of us to be aware of what's happening in the parish and the kind of program we are in. "The turnaround program was initiated to provide intensive hands-on support to parishes experiencing significant financial instability. Our experience working with these parishes suggested that the nature of the challenges often required much more significant hands-on support than occasional consulting. Achieving financial stability first helps the parish—it enables resources to be better used for mission activities; it frees pastor, staff and parishioner time for pastoral activities vs. administrative burdens; and it aims to reduce the stress experienced by pastors and staff in trying to address a significant financial problem. In addition, helping parishes achieve financial stability also helps the Archdiocese overall. A significant number of parishes end each fiscal year with some amount of aid from the Archdiocese in the form of grants, payroll loans or unpaid bills. The level of aid required for parishes has threatened the overall financial stability of the Archdiocese. It has also restricted the amount of resources that might otherwise be available for evangelization, religious education or other important pastoral initiatives, and it has led to the closure of parishes and schools that may otherwise have been avoided. Simply said, parishes that are not able to operate in a sustainable manner, relative to what should be expected of them given their demographics, hurt everyone in the Archdiocese." "The goals of the turnaround program in supporting a parish are the following:

Stabilize the financial results of the parish relative to what should be expected given parish household incomes. Implement standard administrative practices to support local ministry. Free pastor time to focus on ministry needs. Build lay leadership support to assist in long-term ministry growth and sustainability."

Parish New Security Measures

Few weeks ago the Rolling Meadows pastors met with the Chief of Police, John Nowacki. We spoke about the security of our churches. There are some improvements we need to make. A few recommendations were given to us: Securing the basement when it is not being used, closing the choir loft, & having only one side as an entrance. People should not walk through the building freely. After the shooting in Las Vegas, any balcony where the entrance and people's actions cannot be controlled is not a safe place for anyone. Many stores have greeters by the door and only one entrance that helps to know who comes into the place. We will implement these changes beginning in February. In addition, we will have to practice some drills and evacuation procedures from our church building. We will have to meet with and train our ushers to be more vigilant in the way they do their ministry. We also need more ushers who are willing to help our senior ushers. If there is any danger in the building during any service one should: first, run, second, hide and third, fight. This is the order of behavior that is recommended by the police. Also, calling the police is a very responsible behavior.

Pax,

Rev. Michal Lewon Pastor

Sunday, Jan. 28th - St. Thomas Aguinas - d. 1274 "We can look to Thomas Aquinas as a towering example of Catholicism in the sense of broadness, universality, and inclusiveness. We should be determined anew to exercise the divine gift of reason in us, our power to know, learn, and un-derstand. At the same time we should thank God for the gift of his revelation, es-pecially in Jesus Christ."

Monday, Jan. 29th - Servant Brother Juniper - d. 1258 "'Would to God, my brothers, that I had a whole forest of such Junipers,' said Francis of this holy friar. We don’t know much about Juniper before he joined the friars in 1210. Francis sent him to establish “places” for the friars in Gualdo Tadi-no and Viterbo. When Saint Clare was dying, Juniper consoled her. He was devot-ed to the passion of Jesus and was known for his simplicity."

Wednesday, Jan. 31st - Saint John Bosco - d. 1888 "John Bosco’s theory of education could well be used in today’s schools. It was a preventive system, rejecting corporal punishment and placing students in sur-roundings removed from the likelihood of committing sin. He advocated frequent reception of the sacraments of Penance and Holy Communion. He combined cate-chetical training and fatherly guidance, seeking to unite the spiritual life with one’s work, study and play."

Friday, Feb. 2nd - Presentation of the Lord "At the end of the fourth century, a woman named Etheria made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Her journal, discovered in 1887, gives an unprecedented glimpse of liturgical life there. Among the celebrations she describes is the Epiphany, the ob-servance of Christ’s birth, and the gala procession in honor of his Presentation in the Temple 40 days later. (Under the Mosaic Law, a woman was ritually 'unclean' for 40 days after childbirth, when she was to present herself to the priests and offer sacrifice—her 'purification.' Contact with anyone who had brushed against mys-tery—birth or death—excluded a person from Jewish worship.) This feast empha-sizes Jesus’ first appearance in the Temple more than Mary’s purification."

Saturday, Feb. 3rd - St. Blaise - d. 316 "We know that Bishop Blaise was martyred in his episcopal city of Sebastea, Ar-menia, in 316. The legendary Acts of St. Blaise were written 400 years later. Ac-cording to them Blaise was a good bishop, working hard to encourage the spiritual and physical health of his people. Although the Edict of Toleration (311), granting freedom of worship in the Roman Empire, was already five years old, persecution still raged in Armenia. Blaise was apparently forced to flee to the back country. There he lived as a hermit in solitude and prayer, but he made friends with the wild animals. One day a group of hunters seeking wild animals for the amphithea-ter stumbled upon Blaise’s cave. They were first surprised and then frightened. The bishop was kneeling in prayer surrounded by patiently waiting wolves, lions and bears. The legend has it that as the hunters hauled Blaise off to prison, a moth-er came with her young son who had a fish bone lodged in his throat. At Blaise’s command the child was able to cough up the bone."

2018 Annual Catholic Appeal “Come, Follow Me”

Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you received with your bulletin. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. The ACA theme for 2018 is “Come, Follow Me.” Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services to answer Je-sus’ call to “Come, Follow Me.” After our parish goal of $ $40,171, is reached in cash, 100% of any additional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

Update The first Renew My Church (RMC) meeting for our group-ing took place Saturday, January 20th. We had been asked to go over a twenty-page welcome packet that in-cluded clarification of our roles as well as guidance for a spiritual connection to the process. The archdiocesan representative and group facilitator expressed the need for consolidation of services and ministries to optimize the dwindling number of priests. We had multiple oppor-tunities to interact with representatives from the other parishes which allowed us initial insights into what each parish has to offer. Our next group meeting is scheduled for February 12th. We ask you to keep us in your prayers throughout this process.

PADS MINISTRY This summer St. Colette Parish will partner with Journeys the Road Home to offer shelter to persons experiencing homelessness on Saturday nights. Journeys the Road Home is a non-profit agency that provides shelter, social services and housing to the homeless and those at risk of be-coming homeless in north/northwest suburban Cook County. Journeys programs include PADS, which has been providing overnight shelter in our area in several churches since 1989. We will offer overnight shelter May 5 through the last Saturday of the 2018 summer season which is September 25. Our ministry will need 15-20 volunteers each week to cook, set-up, greet, clean up, and manage the overnight. We are hoping to partner with the other churches in our grouping and with the other faith communities in Rolling Meadows.

For more information on Journeys, please check out their web site at

https://www.journeystheroadhome.org/ . There are many details to be work out and we will be communicating with you through the bulletin over the next months. If you have any questions or wish to be involved in the planning process please email us at [email protected]

New 5:30PM Sunday Evening Mass We added a new mass time at 5:30PM on Sunday Evenings. We started this initiative with busy families & parishioners in mind. We know that life can be busy and that makes it hard to participate in the Sunday liturgy. Therefore, our hope is that you find this time more accommodating to your sched-ule. We are also trying out different styles of music and instruments for this mass.

Join the growing number of people attending this

mass to praise the Lord and continue to grow closer to God through His word & the Eucharist.

Check the FOCUS Page on www.stcolette.org for the packet or Contact: St. Colette’s: Lori Brandt at [email protected]

What is Kairos? Kairos, the Lord’s time, is a Christian experience of prayer and reflection run by a team of adults and students. This is a rare time in a teen’s life to step back from stress and pressure to gain some perspective and insight on what’s important in their lives, all in a safe and beautiful environment.

Why? This is the question you should really ask! Why should I spend time reflecting on my life at a retreat? It is hard to know until you have tried. Maybe you are scared about going off to col-lege. Maybe you are trying to decide if you want to go to col-lege. Maybe you are hurt. Maybe you are healed– and wish to rejoice. Maybe you don’t know if God really cares. Maybe you are scared to find out how much He does. There are so many reasons those who have already gone on Kairos could give you about why you should go, but first you have to choose to trust them. Thousands of teens go on Kairos each year. They go and discover who they really are and how they want to live. They come for their own reasons. All leave changed. Maybe the best reason to go is that someone cares enough about you to invite you. Talk to past Kairos partici-pants, youth ministers or priests and ask them why. Even if your decision is not to go, you owe it to yourself to explore why so many people consider that a retreat is an essential ex-perience in your life. FOCUS Teen Ministry want to thank our Kairos Alumni who spoke at Masses sharing their Kairos experience and about the Kairos (K6) Retreat in February!. Marie Lombardo, Sean Feikes, Itzel Melesio and Hugo Zarate inspired us with their inspiring experiences. Information and Registration forms for High School Junior and Seniors are available through FOCUS Teen Ministry and St. Colette Website.

Welcome to Online Giving!

Introducing...GiveCentral!

St. Colette Parish has begun accepting online donations through GiveCentral, our new online

donation service. GiveCentral is a safe, secure, and paperless way to make your Sunday offertory and

other contributions.

It was designed specifically for Catholic churches and schools in the Chicago area, and many other par-ishes in our Diocese have already found success with

it. The site allows you to make a one time or auto-matically repeating payments on a schedule that

works best for you, using any credit card, debit card or electronic bank account.

We believe that having a flexible online giving option will make it easier for many of you

to support St. Colette. Visit our website at www.stcolette.org and click on

the “GiveCentral” link or go to www.GiveCentral.org

Mission Statement We, the faith community of St. Colette, in proclaiming the truth of the Gospel are committed to follow Jesus Christ by being ”the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world”. By our Baptism we are called to serve people of all cultures, migrants, and those who have no voice of their own; our born and unborn children; victims of violence, and the impoverished. Empowered by the Holy Spirit and nurtured by the Eucharist, we are led to promote human dignity and justice for all people. We believe that this is the way the Lord is calling us to be a sign of His kingdom in this time and place.
