Checking in is the right thing to do..

We are so lucky to have the programs and services that we do. Very often it is through special grants and community partnerships that we are able to get great programs like Open Circuit Workout and services like Second Harvest and Food Rescue. The way we are able to do this is through statistical information (we know it just got boring, but, keep reading). We give a few statistics and demographic information to justify our need and poof we have great programs and and services.

So, this is were you ask, “how can I help”. Thanks, we are glad you asked, always sign in on the My Seniors Center screens (there are 2) at the reception desk. Tell it what you are doing today and if you change your mind later you can tell the system you changed your mind. Need help? Just ask the receptionist!

Summer Changes, there are a few….

Let’s talk Line Dancing, you may have noticed some changes to the names of the line dancing programs. The names Absolute Beginners, Beginners, Improvers and Intermediate are being used in the UK and Karen your instructor extraordinaire believes those names best describe the abilities required for each class.

Did you notice that there has been a few time changes for some of the classes? We heard you when you said there should be some time for the classes to change over as it can get a little confusing in the room with everyone coming and going at the same time! We now have a 15 minute gap between Bone Builders and Stretch and Tone. Make sure you check the Summer Program Schedule for all time changes. This is also a great time to remind everyone that we have only a short time between the classes, please be mindful of your fellow members who are in the next class and vacate the room as soon as possible after class. Don’t forget your water bottles!!

On the injured list...Instructor Julie T. has been sidelined for another month due to a persistent injury. We wish her a speedy recovery and in the meantime Karen F. has agreed to continue being the substitute for Thursday mornings Open Circuit Workout and Low Impact Fitness until Julie is in tip top shape. Julie’s Thursday afternoon class Low Stress Chair Fit will be substituted by Nancy A. who is new to YWALC and has the Julie seal of approval.

Speaking of which, we have a number of subs working with us this summer. Jigna will be here for Abhi’s Yoga classes on July 25 and August 1. If you read above you know about Julie’s substitutes. Jenni will be here on July 10 and 17 for Lucy’s Bone Builders and Stretch & Tone class. We love the new energy that a substitute brings to our classes! Any comments you have about the subs should go in the suggestion box for the staff to read, we love to know how they are doing.

Did you know…... Canada has more lakes then the rest of the world’s lakes

combined.

The Fruit of the Month is Mango…..

Known as the king of fruits, mangoes are tropical fruits that belong to the same family as pistachios and cashews.

Mangoes are the national fruit of India. According to Indian beliefs, mangoes symbolize life and are used in almost every

sacred ritual. Mango leaves are often used for festivals and wedding decorations.

Beyond the sweet, luscious taste of mangoes, they contain an abundance of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that

ensure good health. Mangoes are very low in saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium. They are an excellent source of

dietary fiber and are rich in minerals like potassium, magnesium, and copper, and are one of the best sources

of quercetin, beta-carotene, and astragalin. Mangoes contain high amounts of vitamin A and C, which help produce

collagen proteins inside the body. Collagen helps protect blood vessels and the body’s connective tissues, thereby

slowing down the natural aging process. Therefore, mangoes can rightly be called an anti-aging food. Mangoes have

abundant quantities of vitamins, such as C, B6, and folate, which are a few nutrients vital for maintaining and improving

the brain’s function. With mangoes as a part of your diet, you can be assured of a healthy brain and effective nerve

functioning. The glutamine acid content in mangos also improves concentration and memory. There are seven varieties

of mangoes, and with so many health benefits it makes sense to find the one or ones for you!

How to Buy and Store Mangoes

Selecting

When picking a

mango, don’t focus on

color. It is not the best

indicator of ripeness.

Squeeze the mango

gently. A ripe

mango will give

slightly.

Use your experience with produce such as peaches and

avocados, which also become softer as they ripen.

Ripe mangoes will sometimes have a fruity aroma at

their stems.

The red color that appears on some varieties in not an

indicator of ripeness. Always judge by feel.

Storing

Keep unripe mangoes at room temperature. Mangoes shouldn’t be refrigerated before they are ripe.

Mangoes will continue to ripen at room temperature,

becoming sweeter and softer over several days.

To speed up ripening, place mangoes in a paper bag at

room temperature.

Once ripe, mangoes should be moved to the refrigerator,

which will slow down the ripening process. Whole, ripe

mangoes may be stored for up to five days in the

refrigerator.

Mangoes can be peeled, cubed and placed in an airtight

container in the refrigerator for several days or in the

freezer for up to six months. www.mango.org

Have you left it too late to protect yourself from sun damage?

It’s official: the older you are, the less likely you are to slather on sun screen. We’re meant to get wiser as we get older, but when it comes to SPF, we seem to have a bad case of sun blindness. Over 55’s are officially the worst at applying sun screen, with research showing 43% didn’t use SPF even once in the past year. "A lot of people think, 'Well, the damage has been done, it’s futile to start using SPF now.' However sun damage isn’t a definite thing. Keep adding to it and you risk tipping your immune system past the point where it can’t repair mutations any more, leading to skin cancer." (and in the meantime, you’re making yourself look older, faster.) "If everyone over 55 started using sunscreen properly now, regardless of what they’d done in the past, there would be fewer cases of skin cancer in the future," says dermatologist Dr. Sam Bunting. https://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/style/3am-fashion-celebrity-beauty/protect-skin-sun-damage-spf-12894792

Volunteer Corner...

Hello Volunteers! Summer is here and a lot of street festivals and outdoor activities are coming. We are looking for volunteers to advertise YWALC during these neighborhood festivals. Weston Buskerfest is an event happening on Saturday July 20, 2019 from 2:00pm to 6:00pm along Weston Road north and south of Lawrence Ave. We are looking for 3 or 4 volunteers who can walk through the festival route for about 1 hour, distributing brochures in pairs. Also, YWALC will have a table at the Weston Farmers’ Market on Saturday August 17, 2019 from 9:00am to 1:00pm. We need 2 volunteers to join Allegra at the table to talk about YWALC. Enjoy the summer weather and community involvement, it’s fun! Contact Allegra and become a YWALC ambassador for the summer.

From the Suggestion Box…

The Suggestion Box topic is in the volunteer corner this month as the following suggestions are relevant to volunteering and about volunteers.

Comments on June 6, 2019:

Dear Directors, Today in our Spanish for Beginners Class the teacher had to leave to pay for her parking meter which was about to expire. We were shocked that a volunteer who donates her time and expertise was not given a parking pass by YWALC. Why should a volunteer have to pay to park when it would cost you nothing to issue a parking pass with the understanding that they return it if they leave before the year long pass is ended. From a member

Dear Directors, It is kind of volunteers to give their time to instruct us, e.g. the Spanish teacher. It is an unfair expectation that she should pay for parking as well as giving her time and expertise. Thank you, From a member

And lastly, The Spanish teacher should get free parking YWALC Response: We love to see the passion that our members have for their volunteers! It means they are doing a great job and are appreciated. We can see how giving a parking permit might be seen as a simple thing to do, however there is a little more to it. Firstly, we will start with the volunteers themselves, when someone volunteers their time it is understood that they also are required to get to their volunteer job and stay for the duration. We do not ask and they do not tell us how they get here. It is understood that they are freely giving of their time and all that is involved with seeing the job done. Secondly, lets talk about the dreaded P word...Parking! Parking passes are for members only, we have had an incredible time with parking issues here at the building. From off site construction workers and transit users using the lot (if you pay it is OK) to there just not being enough parking to satisfy everyone. Many of our volunteers are lucky enough to also be members so there is no issue with parking (unless the lot is full). You see, if we bend the rules for one volunteer then we need to bend them for all. Can you imagine Bonnie trying to get all those permits printed off? So although we understand and applaud you for standing up for your teacher, we ask that you in turn also understand that if we make an exception for one we must do it for all, our lease agreement doesn’t allow for anyone other then members to receive passes, and for the purpose of visiting the centre. This point in our lease had been a point of contention as it was felt from the building that the parking privileges for YWALC were being abused. We need to always remember that we do not own the parking lot and it belongs to the entire building.
