The abbreviation (OAR) was chosen to represent open art room. The paintbrush in the circular emblem is shaped like an oar to reflect the mission statement; the symbol of the oar empowering and guiding training artists.

The coloured squares represent paint on a palette, and its position in the circle represents a paint stroke, leading the eye around the emblem.

The circular shape is representitive of the holistic approach to the arts at OAR and the ‘O’ in Open.

The tagline “Dare to Create” signifies a challenge to students at open art room to push beyond boundaries. The essence of creating requires you to step out, to put your foot forward. It requires a confidence in your own ability, one that is not tied to the value of your works.

It is a challenge to teachers to celebrate students, their works, to help cultivate the culture of mentorship and encouragement, to build confidence in the students so that they will step out again and again to create.

The logo may be used without the tagline in situations where it’s used on OAR branded materials which provide context and further clarity. As well, this version maybe used if intended for an audience who is knowledgeable about the brand.

In materials where the audience may not be familiar with OAR, it is best to use the tagline version.

Full Colour

The logo is to appear in its full colour versionwhenever possible.

Full Colour on Dark Background

On black or dark backgrounds the Full Colour version can be used as long as the background provides enough contrast to all of the logo colours. In situations where there is not enough contrast, the One Colour or One Colour Reversed version should be used.

Colour Variations

9

One Colour

When colour printing is not available or feasible, this version should be used. For best contrast, use the One Colour version in grey. It may also be printed in black.

One Colour Reversed

For dark background, solid colour applications this version should be used. For best contrast, use the white version. It may be printed in other corporate colours so long as there is no loss of contrast in the logo. This version is suitable for mechanical applications such as cut vinyl or embossing.

The logo consists of 9 colours. The grey is used for the tagline and the image of the brush/oar.

In One Colour prints, any of the listed colours may be used for all elements so long as the contrast is correct and the brandmark and tagline are clearly defined.

A combination of the various colours can be used in various OAR branded designs (such as stationary) and also used to create hierarchy in OAR branded elements.

Josefin Sans Std has been chosen as the main display typeface based on its modern style, light weight, and circular construction in the lowercase letters.

The typeface conveys a light and artistic sensibility. It also has a playfulness to it which makes it a suitable representation of OAR.

Josefin Sans Std is the primary weight. It is to be used for display headers, headers and other non-copy elements. To add variation on a page, point size differences, can be used to create hierarchy. In some instances, all caps may also be appropriate.

Perpetua has been chosen as the secondary typeface based on its transitional style, classic and versatile. It provides a strong contrast between the primary typeface.

Perpetua conveys a elegant and light sensibility. It also has a handcrafted feelwhich will represent OAR well.

Perpetua Regular is the primary weight. Its primary purpose is for copy and other text heavy elements. To add variation on a page, point size differences, bold or italic can be used to create hierarchy. In some instances, all caps may also be appropriate.

The essence of OAR is in its students, teachers, and studio space. It is the interactions, the energy, and work produced which speaks clearly and loudly the strength of the brand. We want this personality to shine through the various applications such as business cards, stationary and in the studio space itself. Student artworks will be the source for imagery for brochures, business cards and other OAR branded items.

Samples of environmental graphics have been displayed, including a mock up campaign for a series entitled “What’s Your Colour.”

Dear Parents,

Welcome to another school year. I trust that you all had a restful and enjoyable summer.

I am very happy to be a part of Open Art Room (OAR). I will be starting my 2nd year here and I am very excited about teaching fourth grade again this year.

Tomorrow and Friday will be full days of school. Starting tomorrow, please send in a snack each day for the morning.

Tuesdays and Thursdays will be gym days. The children may dress in their gym attire tomorrow and wear sneakers. Friday will be a casual dress day.

I will be posting homework and reminders on the school’s website beginning the week of September 12th. Please be sure to check this on a daily basis.

The best way to contact me is by the school email. I look forward to seeing all of you on Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 14th.

Sincerely,

Mr. Justin Liu
