“OPEN ARMS” FOOD PANTRY We will be having an open house and “Pounding” for our new food pantry, “Open Arms” on Sunday, January 27, 2013, 9:00am to noon, beneath the Sanctuary. All are invited to come and see this ministry first hand and how your gifts will be used to bless those that are in need. We are collecting food items, (non-refrigerated), hygiene products, detergent, baby food and diapers. We would also like to have some children toys and books for the children there in the pantry to read and play with while their parents are in with Pastor Zach. Open Arms is an extension to other food pantries here in Hot Springs to help with immediate need of food to those who are less fortunate. If you would like to donate to this ministry, we accept all the items listed any day and every day. If you would like to donate money to this ministry, please make it out to the FUMC, Hot Springs and mark it “Open Arms”. ANNUAL GUMBO COOK-OFF IS COMING FEBRUARY 6TH

Set your calendars and get out your best gumbo recipes. Wednesday, February

6th we will be having another great Gumbo Cook-off in the Christian Life Center’s

Cupp Hall at 4:45pm. This will kick-off Lent that begins the next Wednesday,

February 13th. Come and bring your best gumbo and the church will have rice

and King’s Cake ready to share. If you are planning on bringing gumbo, call Can-

dy Poirier at 623-6668 ext. 117. We had a great turnout last year; let’s make this

one even bigger.

It Starts At Home, Wednesdays, 6:00 p.m, Christian Life Center 209, January

23rd – March 13th. Our children can grow up smart, athletic, popular and polite

but lack a vibrant relationship with Christ. The few hours they spend in church each

week can be helpful, but it cannot nurture a faith in our kids that will withstand the

trials that are on the horizon. Church alone cannot teach them, we must start at

home. But many parents feel ill equipped to develop the faith of their children. In

these six sessions, we will explore biblical and tangible ways that parents—

couples, single parents, blended families and grandparents—can build a legacy of

faith for their children. Each session includes interviews with everyday parents talk-

ing about their own doubts, fears and desires. Gary Thomas, Matt Chandler, and

Kurt and Olivia Bruner provide powerful teaching that will help you give your kids

what they need to build a solid framework for lifelong faith.

Made to Crave, Mondays, January 21st, 12:15 - 1:30 p.m., CLC 204,

Orientation. Classes are January 28th - March 4th, 12:15 -

1:30 p.m. Lynda Jackson, facilitator. A health, fitness and spirituality

study designed to help you gain control of your cravings and make peace with

your body. Nutrition and exercise will be taught with Bible study.

Faithful, Abundant, True, Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m., Christian Life Center 207, January 15-February 19th. Lee Calloway leads this women’s study with a video study led by three well known speakers. Kay Arthur teaches from basically, the entire book of Hebrews! Hebrews is both an example of God's faithfulness and a challenge to believers to be faithful in difficult times. Priscilla Shirer teaches from Ephesians 3:20-21 on God's abundance. A fundamental basis for every believer is the absolute reality that God can do whatever He chooses to do. God's ability empowers our faithfulness.

Beth Moore teaches on the topic of discernment. In these difficult days it is absolutely essential that we learn to trust the Holy Spirit to enable us to determine what is true and what is false. While these three women each speak on the distinctive topic the Holy Spirit had lead them to teach, the messages result in a marvelous blend. Kay challenges us to faithfulness in difficult days. Priscilla points to the essential of trust in God's ability, and Beth teaches on how to discern truth from error in these difficult days.

Single and Parenting, Wednesdays, 6:00 p.m., Christian Life Center

211, January 16 – April 24th. Alison Toney and Julie Allard lead this

study with video seminars that explain how to: Wisely encourage your kids

to obey; Help your hurting child; Eliminate debt; Deal with verbal on-

slaughts; and Figure out what your emotions are telling you. The small

group also gives a support atmosphere with others who are going through and understand the prob-

lems that you face.

ART AND SOUL RETREAT HAS BEEN RE-SCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 4-6!

Many thanks to all who made this past Advent and Christmas season a musical success! Our Chan-cel Choir members and ‘seasonal singers’, along with both the Celebration and Jubilation! handbell choirs, did so well at the December 9

th “Christmas Celebration 2012” presentation. Thanks, music

leaders, for all of the hard work and professional attitudes that were shown in the preparation for the wonderful music you presented. And thanks to Steve Burns for his usual super job narrating the presentation!

We are fortunate to have Sandy O’Bier, Lynne Crow, and Kay Provus as our organists / pia-nists these past two years. Much thanks go to them for their weekly musical leadership. Our services are always “special” for the wonderful keyboard support they give each one.

And church members—thanks to you for your continued support of our church’s traditional and contemporary services. We were all created to worship the Lord—let us continue to come together to give Him our adoration and praise!

FUMC KIDZ Sunday School

JANUARY—“THE AMAZING RACE...DETERMINATION”

Our lives are like a big Amazing Race, and when we practice determination, we can be the one who goes the distance and finishes strong.

The monthly memory verse is: “Let us keep on run-ning the race marked out for us,” Hebrew 12:1b. When God asks us to do something, He’s of-ten guiding us step-by-step in a certain direction that

we may not even see or realize. Our determination to be the one who follows God leads us closer to the good things He has in store for us! When you put your faith in God, He’ll give you the strength you need to keep doing what you should do—even when it’s hard and even when others give up. Because when you have the determination to finish what you’ve started, you won’t miss out on the good things God has in store for you.

OR SALAD AND BAKED POTATO

Just over 2 years ago, Lynn Reeves and I were talking about The Caring Place sale that used to be held each April. I had been asked to try and start this up again; how-ever I was not able to gather any interest in it. Lynn told me that a person had passed away and that the family had taken the contents of the home to Godbehere Auction Company for sale. A check came back for $1600 and I said, “This is the an-swer to our situation”! Subsequently, we received over $28,250 for the Scholarship Fund and today we give over $42,000 in scholarship aid annually.

The ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) club picks up items for the Godbehere Auction each Wednesday after lunch from about 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. I would like to thank the following men who have helped me with this project: Billy Watts, Andy Calloway, Jerry Bush, David Wylie, Byron Jackson, Sam Clark, and Ron Dent. It would be great to have more men who would like to join ROMEO and help with this mission.

During this year, we reached 81 enrollees at The Caring Place. Not all are able to attend every day – we average 30 daily. We have 9 employees and 68 volunteers that make this ministry possible. The scholarship fund is in need of your help. Please keep sending items to the Godbehere Auction each week. They are located at 901 Airport Road here in Hot Springs (501.767.4499) Tell them the proceeds are for The Caring Place or call me and I will make arrangements to pick up the items. We are also asking you to consider joining us in helping with this need. It costs $8 an hour for a person to come to The Caring Place. If you would like to give to support a person who is unable to pay his or her way, it costs $192/week or $760/month. However, any amount you can give will be greatly appre-ciated.

Thank you for your consideration of this worthy ministry.

Sincerely, Ken Krabbe

RUSSIAN DANCE TROUP “GRAND JETE” A HIT

What a great evening of entertainment Saturday evening, Jan. 5

th in Cupp

Hall when the children from Russia graced the stage with their folk danc-ing and ballet. We had over 300 who came to see these children ranging from ages 7 to 17 years of age that had been performing in Arkansas for 2 weeks and were leaving the next day to go back home to Russia. You all were a great support for these kids for their last performance and the love offering you gave, $1500, gave them a grand send-off back home. Thank you.

We are in need of bus drivers for the church bus on Sunday mornings.

You will need a CDL license to drive the bus. We have had a couple re-

tire and move from Hot Springs and we are short some drivers. If you

are able to help with this, call Candy Poirier at 623-6668 ext. 117 for

more information.

The Intercessory Prayer team and Prayer Ministry team would like to thank Brooks Clem of Peters Paint for his contribution of the burgundy carpet for the new Prayer Room. Thanks, Brooks, for your continued service to our church. For the children that will be starting the confirmation class. Pray that through these classes their relationship with God grows into a deeper commitment to Christ. Praise

God for this sixth grade confirmation class and their parents. May they have a desire in their hearts to know and and worship HIM. Welcome to the two new additions to our volleyball team –

the O’Rorke siblings! Van is 17 and a Senior and Bri is 13

and in 8th grade at Lakeside. They helped us get back on

track by winning the match on Jan 8 in two straight games!

Van is actually a soccer player but has proven himself to be

an excellent volleyball player. And Bri, who has been a vol-

leyball player since way back, also played with great prow-

ess! Remember, we play every Tuesday at the Oaklawn

Church of God gym at 2110 7th Street. Check the bulletin for

game time and come cheer us on. Hope to see you there!
