LAS VEGAS–After a dozen years of bringing bowlers the best and mostdynamic bowling events in the world, the Mini Eliminator will offer TWOexciting main events at the beautiful Orleans Casino, Hotel, and BowlingCenter this summer.

First on the agenda is an all-new All Matchplay event July 2-3. TheMoRich Matchplay Championship will guarantee $20,000 first place andan incredible 1:4 cash ratio. This Saturday/Sunday tournament will featurean all matchplay format, and the entire event will be held in only one week-end!

The matchplay format is simple – win two one-game matches and earn$250. Winnings increase with each win until the top two square off for$20,000 and $10,000. Those who lose in rounds one or two may re-enter,and as a special bonus, all re-entries get a new top-of-the-line MORICHbowling ball. Entry deadline for this all-new event is Friday July 1 at 5:00pm., and pre-paid entries are not refundable unless the tournament office isnotified by then.

After the MoRich Matchplay Event, the traditional 3-Game Mini Quali-fier Event will begin and run July 4-10. With all other megabuck events intown completed, the Mini 3-Game Qualifier will be the only game in town,but what a great game it will be, with $30,000 guaranteed 1st place, and aminimum of $1000 to all semi finalists. Half of all those who make thefinals will earn a minimum of $1000. All bowler who do not advance fromthe quarter finals to the semi-finals will earn $500.

The entry fee is only $200 and there will be 26 qualifying squads bydivision (35 and under, 36-44, 50-59, 60+, women and 205 and under aver-age) over seven days July 4-10. Re-entries are $160, but special 4pm squadsJuly 4-7 are $100 re-entry squads provided another squad is bowled earlierin the day. This special $100 re-entry is the best bargain in megabuck bowl-ing.

All Main Event prizes are guaranteed, and in addition to the $30,000 topprize, $15,000, $12,500 and $10,000 is guaranteed for second through fourth.5th-8th will win $5000 each, 9-16 pays $3000 each, 17-32 is $2500, and 33-64 is worth $2000. The Mini Eliminator pays more prizes of $2000 or morethan any other megabuck event! The prize list is not top heavy and is guar-anteed by Pinacle Events and all it’s great sponsors.

Singles at Silver Nugget Lanes in N. Las Vegas is just about filledto it’s capacity of 72 bowlers for this one squad qualifying Singles.Squad Time on Saturday, April 23rd, will start at 10:00AM. Two 5game blocks is the qualifying format with an hour lunch break inafter the 1st block. $165.00 is the Entry Fee for Current WCSTmembers, Guests to add $15.00.

This two divisional format will have two finals on Sunday, April24th, to start at 8:30AM. Age Eligibility to enter: Regular Divi-sion, Men: ages 45 to 59, Ladies, 40 to 49, Super Seniors: Men,ages, 60 and up, Ladies, ages, 50 and up. All bowlers entered willbe bowling for the Regular Division Finals. Super Seniors that donot make the Regular Division Finals, will have their own divi-sional finals. Number of games and bowlers to each finals will bedetermined by the number of entries in each division. There willbe No choice of what finals the Super Seniors bowl, if their quali-fying scores are high enough to make the Regular Division Finals.Super Seniors crossing over to the Regular Division Finals willcarry their prize money paid into the tournament from their entryfees , and this money to be deducted from Super Senior Finals Pay-Offs, and added to the Regular Division place pay-offs. Tourna-ment pays one place for every three entries.

On Friday, April 22nd, starting at 3:00PM, there will be a 5 gameoptional singles sweeper. $55.00 to enter, includes the side-pots.Brackets will be optional at $5.00 per bracket. Losing ATeammate

after receiving the news thatdear friend and fellow bowler,Deloris Douglass had beenrushed to the hospital ICU thatmorning and shortly thereafterlost her courageous battle to re-cover from cancer surgery. Ser-vices were held March 22nd atAngelus Funeral Home, LosAngeles and there was not anempty seat in the chapel.

Alpha Deloris Seals Doug-lass was born April 12, 1928 inMarceline, Missouri.

She was the middle daugh-ter of the late Ralph and MarieSeals. Her constant companionswere her sisters LaVaughnMaxine who lives in Wichita,Kansas and younger sisterVenda Jean who precededDeloris in death in 1999.

Deloris graduated from Lin-coln University in JeffersonCity, Missouri. She moved toLos Angeles and continued hereducation at the University ofSouthern California where shereceived her Masters of Sciencedegree. Deloris had a long anddistinguished career as an edu-cator, working in the Los Ange-les Unified School District forover 35 years.

In 1959 Deloris married Wil-liam “Bill” Douglass, who wasa wonderful musician. Theywere proud parents of onedaughter, Kelli Marie. Sadly,Bill preceded Deloris in deathin 1994.

Deloris was a member ofAlpha Gamma Omega Chapterof Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,Inc. She belonged to many otherorganizations including: Lin-coln University Alumni, TheSociety, Inc., and Friendly Edu-cators. Deloris was a memberof the Los Angeles WBA; theLos Angeles “600” BowlingClub and prided herself in re-maining competitive by partici-pating in the local, state and na-tional tournaments. She playedbridge every week and reportshave it, she posed a threat to heropponents here too. Delorisloved to travel, which also in-cluded making the trip to theWIBC Tournament with us formany years.

Deloris is survived by hersister LaVaughn, her daughterKelli, son-in-law Brent Gill; herfour grandchildren; two niecesSharyl Minnis and Kim(Raymond) Scales; four neph-ews Marc and Anthony Minnis,Kenneth and Bryan Jennings;sister-in-law Frances DouglassCottrell and brother-in-lawJames R Douglass, as well as ahost of other relatives andfriends.

Deloris was a member of theBoard of Directors of our LosAngeles “600” Bowling Cluband in her honor and on behalfof all our members, I will be pre-senting a $50 check to the BVLCommittee at the CWBA Con-vention Meeting May 22nd atthe Pacific Palms ConferenceResort, City of Industry.

I have to say that the shockof this dear lady being gone, stillhasn’t really worn off. In fact,since Deloris was to be ourteammate at the WIBC Tourna-ment in Tulsa this month, Ifound it difficult to go on line tosearch for a “Sub”. However, itwas almost as if Deloris wasacting as our “Bowling Angel”for I was able to pick up an al-most-local gal…… she’s fromBakersfield!

We know Deloris is pleased,because that’s the way she was.

DOWNEY — Tom West, fa-ther, grandfather, great grandfa-ther, husband, bowler and nowofficial S.A.G. actor has a thirdcareer.

Having known the West fam-ily for the past five years, itcame as a surprise to see TomSenior in an episode of WESTWING. When I asked for an in-terview, Tom was happy to com-ply.

Born in New Jersey. He at-tended Rutgers College andmajored in Business Manage-ment and Psychology.

Tom met future wife Franand they were married onChristmas day 1954. They havefour boys, Tom Jr., Greg, Garyand Scott.

The family moved to Cali-fornia in 1971 so Tom could geta PHD in Psychology. Over theyears, the family moved 22times, living 2 1/2 years in VietNam, and various exotic loca-

tions. After three career changes,1. Labor relations; 2. PersonnelConsulting; 3. Intermediarywith Gould Corp., Delta Air-lines, General Signal and WorldVision (traveling around theworld twice), Tom decided tosettle down and enjoy bowling.He and Fran had taken to thesport about 17 years ago. Withthe help of Mark Hammel, theyimproved quickly. They bothlove their scratch leagues andtournaments. Tom has been per-fect eight times. Fran thinks he’sperfect 88% of the time!

Tom Jr. a school teacher,worked as an “extra” duringsummer vacation and talked Dadinto applying at Central Casting.In three days, Tom was “on theset”. He has a face, the age, andposture needed right now. Hol-lywood is desperate for charac-ter actors, not just beautiful bod-ies and perfect teeth. There areplenty of hunks and honeys

standing in line waiting to bediscovered. Tom has more workthan hours in a week.

His credits include: “FlightOf The Phonex”, “Cold Case”,“West Wing”, “Six Feen Under”,and most recently “World OfThe Worlds” with Tom Cruise,directed by Stephen Spielberg.Watch for Tom, he could be“anybody” anytime.

Tom, thanks for giving me apeek into a life that would makea good movie! It is a pleasureknowing your bowling family.

LA HABRA–There will be only three Qualifying Squads in aSpecial One -Day Saturday Event April 16 at La Habra”300” Bowl.

There are (3) Qualifying Squads at 12:30- 2:00 and 3:30 PMwith the 3-6-9 roll-off at 5:00 PM. We will finish early in this one!

The board will be frozen with one in five making the Semifinalsplus added Super Seniors.

There are Guaranteed Pots of $50 per game at 12:30PM and$75 at 2:00PM and at 3:30 PM they will go for $100 Minimum andas always the pots are only $2 per game to enter.

Due to only 3 Squads, First Place in this 3 squad Event is $800min and up to $2,200 can be won 1st Place with full Bonus andCash n Carry options.

New Members are welcome and may join onsite for only$10.Men and Women qualify separately and the ABTA Guarantees aminimum of 34 semifinalists and 27 men and 7 women with one infive also being added to the semifinals.

WEST COVINA–MarkWayman, gentleman to the core,certainly bowls well at WestCovina Lanes. He performedsuperbly, winning his secondABTA Title and his second atWest Covina Lanes. A nice$1,100 top prize downing thetop seed Bret Rose in the titlegame made for a nice win.

In our return to West Covina,Mark topped a nice turnout of209 entrants (four squads only)at the popular Center. Thebowlers produced great cutscores of +107 for the men, and+59 for our lady bowlers. Dueto the nice turnout, we had 55bowlers advance to the semis.We also added Super SeniorsJavier Avila, Lonzell Burnettand Karen Sargent to the semi-finals.

The bowlers took to the lanesin hopes of advancing to the top16 single elim finals. Leadingthe Semis was Big Bret Rosewith his big +171. He wasscheduled with Carlos Vejar insecond place by one scant pinsat +170. Bret would sit out andbowl for the title, with Carlos re-ceiving a first round bye in thetop 16 single elim finals. It tooka +84 for the men and +64 forthe three guaranteed women tomake the top 16 finals. The la-dies had a tie at +64 and JinnyLei edged Amy Arsenault in aclose 9- 10 frame rolloff to ad-vance to the finals. Amy cashedin with fine bowling also.

The top sixteen took to thelanes. Losing in round one ofthe single elims finals wereMichele Tucker, Tim Austin, JoeSarreal, Bobby Alvarado, GilRomero, Chauney Merritt, andJinny Lei. They got $100 finish-ing in 10-16th places.

Round two had Vejar enterthe field and be eliminated byMark Wayman 241-209. VicCopeland got to Dan Cobbs 224-213. David Schaffer downedValerie Carrillo 228-212. DavidFairow downed fellow CitrusBelt Bowler Lonzell Burnett234-218. Losers of round twogot checks of $110 each inplaces 6-9th.

Round three saw Mark takeit to Vic 220-198 and David tookout David Fairow 248 Schaeffer202. David and Victor were 4thand 5th with Fairow andWayman to meet for the right toadvance to the title game vs BretRose.

The Match was set for lanes3-4. These two great guys(gentlemen) were performing sowell, and with only one pin inhandicap differential we ex-pected a good one and weweren’t disappointed. Roseelected to lead off and choppeda spare. Wayman then had a 4-7-10 split, Rose again opened inframe 3 and Mark had a slimlead, but rose then doubled inframe 5-6 and the game was tied.A big split by Rose in frame 7and Wayman began his title runwith a clutch three bagger andhad a nice lead, spared the 10thbut Rose putting it all on the linestruck another turkey andneeded the last two for a tiegame but came up short. Thetitle went to the “good guy”from Corona 203/219-186/203and deservedly so as he did itthe hard way by winning fivestraight matches. Great bowlingMark and you now have a spark-ing record and a two time cham-pion and who says he doesn’tlike West Covina Lanes:-) Goodthings happen to good people.Is #3 next? A nice possibility tobe sure.

Nice bowling by Bret Roseand David Fairow in 2nd and3rd. Rose had his blood flowingright before the semis. He wasthe top qualifier and had to drawfor the $3,090 Match game.Unbelievably drew a 258 andGuess what? that was his game3 in the Semis. He got some niceCash and the beer was on Mr.Rose. He surely had a greatevening at West Covina.

ABTA Notes: Tourney HiQualifiers were David Emrichwith a huge +211 for the men,and Belinda “Brat” Crowder ledthe femmes at +165. That was708 scratch for the pretty lady.Needless to say Mr. Emrich alsohad a nice 7 also. The two willreceive paid entries.

The optional doubles weretaken by Emrich, and DannyCobbs. Their big 1557 got them$120. Belinda and MarvinCrowder had a big 1515 in 2ndfor $100. We paid 10 places inthe doubles. Marv was also in3rd with Matt Fukuda $90.

Chris Romero was last up inthe 3-6-9 going for $1,000, andhe missed on the second shot sowe will have a nice $1,100 inthe 3-6-9 pot this Saturday in ourone day “Early Event” at LaHabra “300” Bowl.

Gay Nineties Wins33-Year Old GilJay Men’s TitleLEISURE WORLD —

“They just keep rolling”, that’swhat Gil Jay said when hetalked about his Leisure Worldleague/tournament bowlers.Gil organized his 55-plus se-nior bowling empire at ForestLanes in the 1972-’73 era.

Last Monday during asweeper rolloff, the Gay Nine-ties team won the tie-breakerthree-gamer by taking all threepoints.

The Gay Nineties trio got itsname for the two 90-year-oldmembers, Sam Block 95 andAl Grama 91; Wayne “Bo”Bowbeer was the secondshooter at 80 years.

The “90” trio needed asweep against Hal’s Pals, AlNeiman, Harry Fagan andCaptain Hanes, for the title.

Grama paced the scoringwith a 206/554, Bo had a 194/494 and Sam a 153/436.

Jay, long gone...passed on in1997, but his leagues and jack-pots keep rolling Mondays andFridays 52-weeks a year.

Bo said, Jay always hadsomething going from ForestLanes, Hawaii, Las Vegas, SunCity, AZ, Mexico city ornearby, home and homematches with other “Leisure”communities. He lined-upteams for the state, OrangeCounty, PBA pro-ams andeven the mens and womensnational tournaments.

Jay was well known. Hewas very active, Cal-State Se-nior President and Hall ofFamer.

DOWNEY–Two more perfectos were notched Monday nightas Armando Zavala and Vic Fabris were both able to string alltwelve strikes. Armando started his night with perfection whileVic followed up on his feat in game two. Armando added 249 hislast game to finish the night with 733 and lead his Etonic team toa 3-1 victory over Reback’s Plumbing. Etonic got help from GregJackson 677 and James Mowrer 666, while Reback’s counteredwith Levi Slocum 708, Jason “Magilla” Carrillo 678, and ScottSlocum 676. Freek Racing kept their chances alive by sweepingpast Pro Approach – Lakewood 4 games to zilch. Chris Makroglouscontinued his hot bowling by firing 269/258/739, Charlie Kinstler279/718, and Paul Barraco 258/645 to lead the Racing team. BillyMyers Jr. stroked a nice 694 set in the losing effort. These twoteams will match up next week to decide the Round Winner. LinderInsurance was hitting on all cylinders in beating league leadersTranscon Logistics 3 games to 1. The rest of the “B” side saw a split between Boulevard Brakesand Exacticator Vise in a well bowled match. John Vanderham267/696, Jerry Ernst 648, and George Parker 643 were tops forthe Vise squad, and Greg Neuer 696 led the Brakes along withJason Hoppe “Go Lucky” 650. The Immel Team defeated ProApproach – Downey 3 games to 1. Missy Bellinder 653 and JavierHernandez 645 led the Immel Team and the pair, as only GaryGladstone got going for Pro Approach with 635. Tony Velascoshot 644 to turbo charge a 3-1 victory for Overboost.com overPrudential – Picarelli. James “Strike” Maker 255/696 and An-thony Carlton Jr. 664 sewed up a 4 game sweep for Threadworksas Driver Insurance was again bowling with two blinds.

On the “A” side we are still awaiting the final decision of theUSBC regarding the protest and subsequent appeal between Fam-ily Amusement and T.D. Rowe. We are hoping to have this settledbefore next week so we can accurately determine the 4th RoundWinner. Ironically, T.D. Rowe and Family Amusement matchedup for the 2nd straight week and this time T.D. Rowe came out ontop 3 games to 1. Derek Lee 269/711 and Jeff Hickenbottom 248/669 were the leaders for T.D. Rowe with Gary Duran 269/256/738 and Memo Rosales 279/636 got the lone win for FamilyAmusement. Royal Alliance jumped out to a two game lead overJ.C. Spas put couldn’t pull the plug. Spas came back strong ingame 3 and gained a split. Vayle Floria was his usual steady selfwith 688 to lead the Royal team along with Ramiro Garcia 248/602. J.C. Spas had three jets working with Norm Black Sr. 678,David Van Gaston 258/666, and James Cox 652 powering the

Tri Star Vending blasted Parke Industries by shooting the nightshighest team series with 2680. Every team member fired a 600 ormore led by Jon Brandon “Iron” 705, Harry Wong Jr. 689, JamieRovner 666, and David Yamauchi 620. Mike Ashby rolled a fine700 series in a losing cause for Parke Industries. Bowlers Depot –Lake Forest came back from a game 1 loss to take the next threebehind the hot bowling of Pat Danforth 279/668 & Chris Oakes662. Al’s Bar Supply struggled after game 1 with Spanky Rosales’s625 being high for Al’s. Western Pacific bowled just well enoughto sweep by Team Storm who was mostly cloudy all night. LarryOsterhoudt 655 & Danny Cobbs 637 paced the winners withHerbert Jones striking a little lightning for the Storm with 263/666. The last match of the evening was another sweep as the Ath-letics ran Circles around America’s Lending. Circle was led byKyle Asberry 622 and Tim Greenwood 269/611. Only MykeStrafford with 620 was able to get on track for the Lending team.

The side pots were missing some key bowlers again, but thewinners are grateful! 1st game went to Armando Zavala with his300 game and Herbert Jones 263 secured 2nd. Pat Danforth stroked11 of 12 strikes again this week to take game 2 with a nice 279and Greg Neuer 243 took down 2nd. Game 3 was a two way tiebetween John Vanderham and Alonzo Lemons with 267 to splitboth the 3rd game and Super side pots. Frank Barefoot Jr. took theSeries pot with his 723 set. Congratulations to Vic Fabris andArmando Zavala on their 300 games (can’t wait to see your 100pins over average watch Vic!) and to all the pot winners!

As mentioned above, no decision has been made regarding thestatus of the 4 games under protest/appeal between Family Amuse-ment and T.D. Rowe. If the games stand, Family Amusement willhold a 3 game lead and would bowl J.C. Spas for the Round need-ing only to win one game to clinch. A reversal of those 4 winschanges everything! J.C. Spas will be first with 16 wins, WesternPacific 2nd with 15.5, and Family Amusement would be tied withBowlers Depot l- Lake Forest with 15 wins. Royal Alliance wouldneed a strange finish to win it, but could with a sweep at 14.5wins. Either way, we will have an exciting finish as two teamswill battle it out the last night for the round on both the “A” and“B” side. Rich enteredour 4 PM squad and shot 297,286, 275 and 190 with handicapgood for a 1048 four game se-ries and the $800 1st place prize.Rich also won an additional$500 in the Win, Place, andShow Pot, for a total of $1,300dollars. Vic Paolucci of Orangefinished in second place with his1040 handicap set for $400 plusan additional $300 in the Win,Place, & Show Pot for a total of$700 dollars. Finishing in thirdplace for shooting a 1035 fourgame set with handicap was JeffTaino of Chino Hills. We drew the Mystery Pot ofGold game number (game #2)after the final squad and alsodrew the first chance score (254with handicap) after our finalsquad. After going through allthe scores from this weekend,we found one bowler that shot254 with handicap in Game #2,but that bowler was not in theMystery Pot of Gold. The 2nd

chance score was 199, and therewas no winner. The 3rd chancescore was 201, and there was nowinner. Remember, the MysteryPot of Gold is available to allmembers (Classic and Masters)and costs only $5 for a chanceat $1,000.

LAS VEGAS–The Las Ve-gas Travel league 2004-2005season ended their 47th seasonMonday, April 4, with optionalDoubles and Singles sweeps atThe Orleans. Thirty-threebowlers competed for a record$1,145.25 prize fund and acouple of hundred more dollarswas up for grabs in the sidepotscollected by Bernice Bennettand Joan Roper.

There is always a star bowlereach year and Doris Lewisearned the spotlight this yearwith 244-610 scratch total. Thesingles paid six places to Doris,658 handicap high, Vi Wilson637, Pris Mauricio 206-608, SueMcGill 603, Ada Burri and JoanLumpford tied on 600 so 5th and6th place positions were com-bined and split equally. AnnFedderly rates honorable men-tion with 595 and did cash indoubles.

Obviously, Doris and Vicopped first place in doubles andmany more places in doubles.We especially thank PhyllisBaldwin for doing the doubles,with assistance from RobertaMcNaught. LAS VEGAS, NV. On March 28, Sports Illustrated graced bowl-ing with a single paragraph., 121-Word essay about Liz Johnson’smonumental second place finish in the PBA Banquet Open. Withpossible intervention from above, SI “discovered” that ... good grief... a WOMAN barely missed winning a MEN’S professional title,thus on April 4th they found room for more on her astonishingperformance.

All of which caused me to write the SI Editor...a message whichwill never see the light of day... it is too long and too critical of theauthor. So let me offer it to you for review:

“LETTER TO THE EDITOR:The ecstasy of it all! Imagine: “BOWLING” received SI men-

tion on consecutive weeks! (Mar. 28 & Apr. 4.) Why? A profes-sional woman. bowler, Liz Johnson, basically did the impossiblewhen she not only qualified in a “rabbit squad” shootout, but also“made the cut” in the PBA (Banquet Open) Tour event, and, wenton to finish second in the ESPN televised finals-. This unbeliev-able accomplishment rated a one paragraph., 121-word mention,March 28. THAT, had it been accomplished or. the PGA Tour byAnnika Sorenstam or other female golfer, would have received acover and six pages inside plus another Rick Reilly piece. By April4, SI must have had an “oops,” and discovered Liz Johnson’s featwas MAJOR, responding with two-thirds of a page about her bril-liant effort, which noted she was a long-time member of the nowdefunct PWBA Tour. But the dunderhead coverage suggested shehad won 11-titles in the PWBA league. No, it Was NOT a LEAGUE,you twit, it was a PROFESSIONAL TOUR ... like the LPGA orthe PGA or the PBA. While top pro’s in each tour are equally tal-ented athletes tho’ unequally compensated, the degree of difficultyin each sport is enormous at the pro level. You’d think the sportthat has 70-million participants on a yearly basis would get a littlemore ink, especially during the 20-week PBA run. But ... thanksfor the blurbs ...even if it took a great lady to get it... league or not.”

* SI has some fine writers, but alas, not too versed in hurling abowling ball.

* On April 3, the PBA Talkathon and Advertiser Show; aliasthe PBA “Denny’s World Championship” began at 10am and fin-ished at 11:45am, running 15—minutes overtime on ESPN. Thetelecast featured THREE-games of bowling! ONE-HOUR-AND-FORTY-FIVE MINUTES for THREE-games??? You’ve gotto be kidding! (On April 10 they did much better ... five minutesextra was all that was needed!) As I’ve mentioned in the past, mypartner Dick Holst and I produced 344 ONE-HOUR shows featur-ing So. Calif.’s finest; during which we showed three-games in alive program, included an opening and closing segment, got in allthe advertising, had fewer time-saving strikes due to the condi-tions in the 1960’s.. yet we got it done in the allotted time frame. Inprior years, the PBA has always managed FOUR-GAMES in 90-minutes.

This season the PBA is sadly replete with more drivel and inanenon-bowling blather and trick-shot goofiness when people tune into watch the greatest bowlers in the world and come away sadlyshort-changed. What can be done to restore this once excellentsports show to its former glory...some might call it the “pre-SteveMiller era,” when gimmicks did not over-shadow the super starsbowling as the game is meant to be played ... which is not tossinga ball thru the legs of chairs, or some idiotic thing? Here’s a coupleof easy-to-accomplish ideas to get back the viewers we’ve lost andkeep the one’s we got, and to generated a host of new fans:

1) Dump the two announcers. You really only need one GOODone. (Vin Scully has been a great solo act for years.) How aboutMarshall Holman, a proven commodity as a bowler and announcer,for next season?

2) Bowl two one-game matches to determine the two finalists,make the title duel a two-game, total pinfall slugfest.

3) Dump the “sideline reporterettle.” It is simply more blather.4) Bury the “trick shot” lunacy. (If it is such a big deal to the

Seattle PBA leadership, put it on as a half-hour separate show forafter-midnight TV.

5) Forget all the technical jargon about the lane oil. Mentionwhich pattern is being used, and remind the viewers how the oil“moves” with each shot.

6) Then the perfect remedy for fairness: Use lanes 1 & 2 forALL practice before the show and between games. All actual matchgames would be rolled on lanes 3 & 4, which would he oiled priorto bowling, and properly dressed between EACH match, easilyaccomplished during the endless advertising “breaks” in the com-petition. The first ball any player rolls on that pair counts! No moreexcuses. Fresh oil for every match.

7) Have the PBA brass re-read above six items until they getthem memorized, which means ... getting it right. We got more...let them absorb this, for now!

We had twenty one makingthe Semi’s with a plus 116 lowto qualify. Top nine series fromSemi’s were seeded into theShoot-out. .They were ChuckBrode, Carlos Castillo, LuisMicheri, Thomas Licauco,Michael Dang, Sun Sundara,Richard Reams and MikeMoore. High qualifier the verygood- natured James Sims witha plus 151 sat out first and sec-ond rounds. From the first roundof eight four were eliminatedleaving four for second round.

They were Thomas Licaucowith a very well shot 288, Rich-ard Reams with a 249, LuisMicheri with a 254 and ChuckBrode with a 251 game. Fromthis second round three with thelowest games were eliminated .

What a challenge it was?? Itwas a scratch match as both had20 pins for handicap. JamesSims took command in the firsthalf of the game starting with aspare, a double, opening in thesixth frame on a four-seven- tensplit then spared the seventhframe, got a strike in the eighthframe, a spare in the ninth stillin the race but as fate wouldhave it opened the tenth frameto post a 178/198 with handi-cap for second place.

I mustsay he is agile.

LAKE FOREST–This pastSunday, JST action resumedwith another great tournament atForest Lanes in Lake Forest.There are only a few number ofregular tournaments left beforethe Junior Scratch Tour’s “ma-jor” tournaments, and now morethan ever, points are meaning somuch. With the new JST HighPoints tournament, every bowleris trying to get as many pointsas possible to qualify for theprestigious tournament. Alongwith the points everyone is try-ing to get, scholarships are an-other thing every bowler isbowling for. At just this tourna-ment, the JST awarded $725 inscholarships to all its winnersand placers. It all would not bepossible without the continuinggreat support of our wonderfulsponsors: Storm Bowling Prod-ucts Inc., and B&W BowlingEquipment. Thanks to them weare always able to award thismuch at each event, but remem-ber with the more bowlers in anevent, then the more scholar-ship.

Now onto the bowling…The Novice Div. got started

off with Kaitlin Mayall in firstafter qualifying with a real nice751 set. That did not stop SeanBeever from shooting the highgame of qualifying with a nice207 game. They then cut to thetop four, for 2 games of matchplay, to determine who would bebowling in the one game roll offfor the championship. The top 3would all be close, with Mayallstaying in first, and Ryan Brownwould move up and get the bet-ter of Beever by just 7 pins tomake the roll off. Mayall was inher second championshipmatch, looking to win her first,but would fall down to Brown’s169 game in the match. Congratsgoes out to Ryan on his first JSTwin, good for the first place $50scholarship and JST Championsshirt.

Newcomers would be upnear the top the whole tourna-ment in the Intermediate Div. asCharlie Hair shot the high set ofqualifying with a great 827 set.He would share high game hon-ors with Susy Monteith, bothrolling nice 232 games. Thebowling stepped up in matchplay, as Susy, the sister of Ad-vanced Div. star J.R., wouldblow away the field, rolling atremendous 712 series for thefirst 3 games of match play, andended the fourth game with an-other nice 236 game. Greatshooting! With her in first, Hairwould fall down to second as theonly other bowling in the plusrange, and Steven Sensabaughwould make his finals debut, in3rd. You could tell Hair wantedthe win; he defeated Steven inthe first match 206-150, andwould go on to bowl an evengreater game in the title match,defeating Monteith for the title,224-169. Congratulations toCharlie on his first ever JST title,good for the $75 first placescholarship.

The Advance Div. wouldhave many exciting storylinestoday, as Robert Page was bowl-ing in his first tournament in theAdvance Div. after just movingup from the Intermediate Div.He would not be intimidated atall, shooting a nice 899 set inqualifying to lead the AdvanceDiv. into match play. The otherMonteith, J.R., would shoot thehigh game of qualifying with anice 269 game. The top 4 afterqualifying would all stay in thetop 4 for the roll off, with themall swapping positions. Pagewould fall down to 4th, as Patrick

JST at ForestSnyder moved from 4th to 3rd,Monteith consistently shootingall 190 games in match play tokeep his 2nd position, and JustenDanforth moving into 1st.Snyder would unload the strikesin the first match to defeat Page268-179. Snyder could not re-turn to form in the next match,losing to Monteith 175-218. Thetitle match was then set, withboth bowlers looking for theirfirst JST titles, and they wouldput on one of the greatest JSTmatches in history. Many strikesfilled the frames, and after manyclutch performances by bothbowlers, there would be a tie,with both bowlers shooting re-ally nice 256 games. The twoframe roll off would put on moredrama, with Danforth slammingan 8 pin in his first shot for thespare. Monteith would then slama high flush 7-9 split, and finishthe two frame roll off with a 29.Danforth would just need aspare and high count in his finalframe, and he would just purecrush the pocket for the win,ending up with a 49. Great bowl-ing to Justen on his win, goodfor the $125 scholarship, andJST’s Champions shirt. And agreat match to you two.

Nathan Urrutia would be inthe lead in the Open Div. formatch play, with a 907 set. JoshBlanchard’s 269 game in quali-fying was good for high gamepoints. Blanchard would con-tinue the great bowling, to moveinto first, as Danny Gartin wouldbe making his second Open rolloff in 2nd, and Brian Carmichaelwould jump up a notch into 3rd.Carmichael saved his bestgames of the day for the roll offas he defeated Gartin in the firstmatch 259-172. Blanchardwould be looking for his secondtitle in a row, but could not stopthe hot Carmichael, falling in thematch 215-250. Congratulationsto Brian on his JST-leading thirdtitle of the year, good for the$125 first place scholarship.

That was some tremendousbowling from everyone, andgreat bowling and congrats onceagain to everyone. There areonly two regular JST tourna-ments left before the JST HighPoints Tournament, and JST Fi-nals Tournament. The final regu-lar tournament will be a doublepoints tournament, and now isthe time for bowlers to be mak-ing their moves into the Top 16of their respective divisions forthe new to this year, JST HighPoints Tournament. It will beoffering even more scholarshipprizes, and a unique tournamentformat. More detail will be outsoon.

The next tournament haschanged locations. It is stillscheduled for April 24th, but hasnow changed from Action Lanesto New Yorba Linda Bowl, withthe stop at Riverside Lanes nowbeing dropped, and being re-placed by Action Lanes. Thereasoning for the switch fromAction to New Yorba Linda, isbecause on that Saturday, the23rd, another junior touring club,the JBT (Junior Bowlers Tour),will be at New Yorba Linda. TheJBT is Arizona based, and bringsout many bowlers from thereand Nevada as well. So the hopeis for a JST-JBT super bowlingweekend, with many bowlersbowling in both events. Withthat in mind, that is it. We hopeeveryone has a great few weeks,and keeps up the practice. Wehope to see everyone on theweekend of the 23rd-24th, and donot forget how important pointsare now. Preston Fukumizu nabs two wor-thy YABA titles, high game, ascratch 300 and a 725 series forthe singles honors. CourtneySchultz rolled 130 pins over hisaverage to take the overall hon-ors.

The 41st Orange CountyYoung American Bowling Asso-ciation held their tournament re-cently at AMF Valley View andForest Lanes.

According to Cheryl Hunting-ton the event’s secretary, “Wehad a wonderful time at the hostcenters and I want to thank allthe participating centers,coaches, volunteers and spon-sors, the scoring was great, infact sensational.”

In team play La Habraclaimed a hefty share. Teams 9,12 and 14 were 399 class win-ners. The 400 class, La Habra 5,Jammers and SaddlebackColection. The 520s,Weatherbee-Mitchell, La Habra3 and Westminster 5 were theleaders. The 640s, SaddlebackReves and La Habra 11s to theglory. The 720s, La Habra1.Saddleback Reves and Boys toMen could be the winners.

Doubles, Felipe Mereno/PaulDuron were the winners with a1388; 2. Kelsey Nugent/BrittanySchulman 1382 and 3. RyanLargey/Heather Bloom.

CERRITOS–Striking Forcebowlers at Cerritos Lanes areraising the bar this season forthis division. In years past thisleague was filled with goodbowlers who normally waiteduntil they reached the right ageto move to the senior division.A score of 150 or more wouldnormally garner headlines andhigh game scores, however thisgroup of Striking Force bowlershas set a new standard. Twoweeks ago this league steppedup and had twelve bowlers hitthe 150 or higher mark. Makeno mistake, twelve is an unusu-ally high number of bowlers toaccomplish this feat. Howeverthis was just a preview of com-ing attractions, as the followingSaturday had 18 bowlers gothough the 150 mark. A casecould be made that experienceand practice is behind the surgein this division, or it could be thehard work put in by Junior coachTom Ferry who works with thisdivision. however whatever thecause is, it is establishing anoutstanding pool of talent for theyears ahead. Continued successto all Striking Force bowlers.

On Saturday afternoon,youth and adult bowlers lined upfor an adult/jr. tournament. Highscratch scoring bowlers includedKevin Peterson 267-729, SteveBojorquez 193, Kiana Jansen190, Jared Lawrence 276, and onthe adult side Rick Arellano 225,Tom Heath 226, D.J. Cabading245 and Phillip Lebaquin 236.When all was aid and done theroll off in the “B” division sawJason Ito and Tom Ferry matchagainst Lisa Hom and HenryHom. Jason and Tom lined upearly and won 408 to 360. Nextup was the top qualifying teamof JJ and Frank Robeniol. Jasonand Tom stayed lined up as theywon easily 458 to 384. As thiswriter can attest to, if your par-ent is a coach, never bowl withthem if you want a chance to dowell. Coach Chuck Ito and TomFerry joined the club of coachesthat have been fired by their chil-dren, in an attempt to do well.

In the “A” division matchone saw Gerard Sunga andJulian Conwi paired againstKyle and Mary Jacobwitz. Thismatch was close until the endwith Kyle and Mary winningnarrowly 454 to 430. In thechampionship match they facedTheresa Rusas and Tom (superbowler) Ferry. This match wasthe closest of the afternoon withKyle and Mary winning by amere eight pins 416 to 408. Tomwas kind enough to pair up withmultiple youth bowlers and hisgreat bowling and work on thetournament is to be applauded.Congratulations to all of thebowlers on a job well done.

National Deaf Bowling NewsFlorida Senior Bowler Needleman

Passed Away At 68by Connie Marchione

TAMARAC–This writer was shocked and saddened when hereceived e-mail from the Deaf Senior Bowlers of America Secre-tary-Treasurer Carol Moers about the passing of Florida’s greatbowling senior Bernard Needleman last March 19 at age of 68.

It was hard to believe that this genteel man and bowler is gone.Bill Cozad, the director of National Deaf Master Bowlers Associa-tion told me that he met Needleman a few months ago and he toldCozad that he was averaging at 214. So Cozad got him interested inNDMBA tournament.

It was in the Deaf Seniors Bowlers of America October 2001tournament at The Orleans in Las Vegas I met Needleman, a nativeof Philadelphia who moved to Florida as a retiree. He was accom-panied by his close friend Doris Berman whom I knew for twodecades.

At that time this smooth bowler carried a 202 average and rolledthe high scratch 665 series in the singles event. Then in the 4 gamesqualifying event of the Deaf Seniors Elimination tournament, afterfirst 3 games 613 series, Needleman began his 4th with 10 strikesin row. But he left three pins standing on his 11th ball and sparedfor the tournament and career high 287 game. He finished at the topwith a record 900 scratch total. But in the match plays with his tiny6 handicap, he eliminated in the third round.

The following year Needleman’s name popped up again in De-cember when he hit 11 in row and left one for a career high 299game. But it did not last long because in the following January2003 he finally achieved his perfect game at Don Carter TamaracLames.

Our condolence goes to his family and close companion DorisBerman.

DEAF PBA BOWLERS WUKASCH &KACZMARCZYK EACH TRIED ONCE ON THE TOUR.

Last January Texan John Wukasch, Jr failed to qualify in PBATour’s Dallas Open at Don Carter Bowl and Detroit’s PeteKaczmarczyk tried in the PBA US Open Championship at Taylor,MI last month.

Wukasch averaged in the low 170’s in 55th place with his 9game try. Kaczmarczyk did better but failed to crack 200 averagein each of his three 6 games qualifying rounds. He finished with3525 total pins (195 average) for 121st place. Hope they have bet-ter luck next time.

ABC RECORDS NOT MATCHING DEGROFF’S NUMBERSMILLWAUKEE…USBC headquarters read my last week’sDeGroff’s 299 s article and told me that only two of DeGroff’s299s were counted and also 15 of his 300s and 5 of his 800s. Therest of his numbers may be in practice or unsanctioned play.

There is a possibly that with ABC’s one honor award limit ayear made the league and tournament secretaries and Local asso-ciation secretaries stop sending in repeats in the same season. SoDeGroff and others better follow up to make sure their repeat scoresmake their way to ABC In order to get the correct count.
