Wes Malott became the first bowler since Mike Wolfe in 2004 to capture his first career Tour title. LAKEWOOD—Wes Malott’s win in last week’s 2005 Mile High Classic made him the first bowler to pick up his first career Tour title since Mike Wolfe notched his first career victory in last season’s 2004 Earl Anthony Medford Classic. Malott’s victory snapped a 46- event winless streak to start his career. There are now 23 exempt bowlers currently on Tour who are searching for their first ca- reer victory. Who will be the next one to add his name to the 286 bowlers who have won a Tour title? Here’s a look at the exempt bowlers looking to ditch the longest winless streaks on Tour: Rank Bowler Events 1. Michael Haugen Jr. 160 2. Rudy Kasimakis 136 3. Tony Reyes 129 4. Paul Fleming 119 5. Joe Ciccone 101 So Close But No Cigar Not only was Malott looking to win his first career Denny’s PBA Tour title last Sunday, but he also was looking to add his name to the record books. Malott, who had fired 300 games in both the Dydo Japan Cup 2005 and the 2005 Tulsa Championship, was looking to become just the sixth bowler in Tour history to shoot 300 games in three straight events. The 29-year-old came as close as possible to accomplish- ing the feat… twice. In his round of 16 match against Danny Wiseman, Malott fired a 299 in game three. On Sunday, Malott came within a 4-pin of his third 300-game of the season, defeat- ing Patrick Allen 299-236. PBA Hall of Famer Jim Stefanich was the first bowler to shoot a 300 game in three con- secutive Tour events back in 1972. Steve Wunderlich was the second bowler to accomplish the feat in 1986 before Mike Miller did it over the 1990 and 1991 seasons. Over the 1996 and 1997 seasons, John Mazza also added his name to the record book. The last bowler to fire a 300 game in three straight events was PBA on ESPN broadcaster and 13-time title winner Randy Pedersen, who did it during the 2002-03 season. Hall of Fame & Awards Ceremony Richard “Dick” Fullerton Passes VENTURA—We would like the bowling community to know about the passing of Richard “Dick” Fullerton. Born March 13th, Dick died at the age of 76 on November 2nd. He spent 40 years promot- ing bowling, both youth and adult, in Ventura County serv- ing as both the Youth associa- tion and then the Ventura County Bowling Association Secretary. He leaves 3 children, Gary and Clark Fullerton and Mary Smith. 3 Grandchildren, Robert, Chris and Lisa Smith and 2 Great Grandchildren, Kayla and Jacob Smith. He will be missed by all who knew him for his geniune delight in his bowling friend- ships and handing out awards, especially at Harley’s Simi Bowl and Brunswick Valley Bowl. Services will be on Novem- ber 22nd in Alva, Oklahoma where he will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife Billy who preceded him in death. Edna Sides Posts Back-to-Back All-Spare Games MISSION VIEJO—There’s an OC/USBC Award for a 300 game, 700, 800 or 900 series or an All- Spare Game, Dutch 200, but if you bowl 24 strikes-in-a-row, nothing, same thing with getting back-to- back all-spare games. Ask Edna Sides, an Orange County super senior keglerette. She doesn’t have a perfecto but she did bowl an all-spare game on October 6, 2005 in Saddleback Lanes’ Young At Heart League — first game a 183, came back with a 191 and a 135 for a 509 series. Over at OCBA headquarters, Hall of Famer Rae Miller pondered what’s for back-to-back all-spare game, nothing? Quick thinking, Rae sent Edna two all-spare game medallions pinned to an all-spare game embroi- dered patch. Now the $64 question. Is Edna’s fete the first in Orange County? At Forest Lanes where the O.C. Roadrunners Travel League nested a number of active OCWBA offic- ers participated as well as Edna Sides, it was their thinking since there was no evidence of another back-to-back all-spare score Edna’s will stand. They also agreed, Edna was a worthy member bowling in four sanctioned leagues the past season carrying a 150-plus average, com- petes in all sanctioned OC annual events, is entitled to wear the me- dallions. by Lori Yamasaki

National Deaf Bowling NewsIowan David Froehle Wine $2,000

Kansas Deaf Classicby Connie Marchione

OLATHE, KS—A 169 average senior bowler from St. Charles,IA, David Froehle took advantage of his large handicap whichhe used in scoring a huge 1012 total to win the $2,000guaranteed 1st place prize Kansas Deaf Singles Classic. The4th annual event held last October 23 at Olathe Lanes East, was sponsored by Kansas Deaf Bowling Association anddirected by co-chairpersons Thaine Maelser and Stacey Thomp-son.

Froehle’s scores and handicap were not listed in thereport. But assuming his handicap was 130, he must haveaveraged 220 for his 4 games. A week prior to this ClassicFroehle bowled in the Deaf Senior Bowlers of Americatournament at the Orleans Hotel Bowling Center in Las Vegasand was rerated to 173 average. This senior Froehle cashedin all 3 Deaf Seniors events, averaging 195 for his 14games. Is he the same David Froehle who had a 210 averageback in 2001?

Placing 2nd to Froehle was D.J. Powell, a 227 averagebowler from Indiana who rolled a magnificent zero handicap965 total from games of 249-236-232-248. Great but accordingto Maelzer, there were only 61 men entries which was waybelow their expectations, the 2nd place prize was $700.00.The rest of the prize fund was distributed down to 10thplace according to its ratio.

Placing third was Ed Thomas, NE with 180 ave. hitting a 905total for $350.00. Two locals, Donald Ketter and HaroldLeiker both of Olathe cashed. Ketter placed 5th with 896 for$98.00 and Leiker took the 10th place $65.00 for his last tocash 849.

Stacey Thompson said, there were only 8 women entered inits women’s Classic and 158 average Terri Bogle, Mo took theguaranteed 1st place prize of $500.00 with her 793 total.Only two additional place prizes were given, Second place$130.00 went to Mary Ellen Dallman, MO for her 765 andKansan Molly Gann took third $52.00 with her 754.Defending 2004 champion Mark Fisser, CA who was inOlathe for the National Deaf Master Bowlers tournament threeweeks before this event, did not come. Maelzer and Thompsonhave not decided about the 5th annual event but arepreparing for Kansas Deaf Bowling Association’s hosting ofNational Deaf Mixed Bowlers Association’s tournament in June2007.

TRAVELLEAGUEBy Alice

CERRITOS LANES—Thehighlight of Monday’s bowling atCerritos Lanes was an unexpectedvisit by long time Vegas leaguemember Erma Palmer. It was her firstappearance since Vegas Sweeps lastMarch.

Erma has been sidelined frombowling for more than 10 monthsand is presently dependent on awheel chair. Although she looksgreat her return to bowling is indefi-nite and we sure miss her!

Unfortunately, the league honorroll suffered this week. There weremany 490 clusters but few at 500 orbetter. Dutch Sullivan led with 515,followed by Bernice Williams 200-501, Margo McClain and B.J.Jemison had 501 series and HazelBently converted a 6-7-8-10splitacular. Hopefully the league willbowl on newly installed lanes whenwe return for our second visit.

Cal Bowl B team tops teamstandings with 28 wins, followed byCerritos Lanes, 26; Rossmoor B, 25,Del Rio A and Keystone A tie at 23.2;Cal E, 21; Del Rio B, 20 and the restof the league trails from 19.2 winsdown to the 16th place.

OOPS DEPARTMENT: We re-ported last weeks that Pat Willmore, age 86, was senior member in theleague but we were wrong. HazelBentley claims that honor at 88. Alsowe learned Monday that we have 19members over age 70 and manyclose to it. Incidentally, the majorityof members have been on boardmore than 25 years since the leaguebegan 48 years ago.

With so many past medical pro-cedures, knee and hip replacements, the survivors can be classified as aleague of “Bionic Women” and theyare truly an inspirtation. Althoughbowling averages have decreased, the spirit of these bowlers has in-creased.

NEXT WEEK: 9:30 a.m. Mon-day November 14, WestminsterLanes.

Vernon Adams led the way forthe winners with 563 Ramon “The Terror” Torres cameout firing with a 215 and finished with 563 to lead Reback’sPlumbing to a sweep of Pro Approach – Lakewood.Tangeo.com did just enough, as Arnold Cheesman 214/533 led his team to a sweep of Team 17. Clyde’s VideoGames didn’t earn any FREE replays, but did manage tosweep Team 1 despite not shooting a 200 game. Pro Ap-proach – Downey was also sub-200 for all three games, but didn’t just enough to sweep Team 2. It should be fun, it always is dur-ing Round 2, so be sure to come down to DEL RIO andwatch it all live! Thanks again for checking in!

My how the times have changed… and the SCORES!First night of Round 2 definitely went to the conditions ina blowout, as only Jason Hoppe was able to crack the 600mark. For those of you not familiar with Round 2 at DelRio, it’s known as the “dry round” and the conditions areextremely tough. Going into last night, 24 bowlers wereaveraging 210 or better with nearly half (11) of them over220. Jon Brandon led the first round in average with 234.However, on this night, most bowlers were humbled bythe short oil conditions and forced to revert to “spare”balls to keep it close to the pocket. To give you an ideahow tough the shot was, 73 bowlers entered the “CleanPot”, awarded to any bowler who manages to make allspares and strikes for all three games, and only James Coxmanaged to make it through Game 1! His chance was shortlived as he opened early in Game 2. If the pot isn’t bro-ken, and I don’t think it has been the past two seasons, itcomes down to the last survivor on the last night of theround. There’s also a $5000 bonus to anyone who’s ableto shoot a Perfect 300 Game using a Brunswick bowlingball, something that has not been done in the 20-year his-tory of this league. So enough history and stats, let’s getto the lowlights of opening night.

The new “A” Division featured a match up betweenthe Round 1 winners Linder Insurance and Team 6 and itdidn’t take long for Linder to show their dominance. MattJaime had a league high 236 game to overcome JerryErnst’s 213 and lead Linder Insurance to a 74-pin win.Linder went on to sweep Team 6 to secure a tie for firstplace. Matt finished with a league 2nd best 596 and wasaided by Nick Smith with 551. Jerry Ernst led Team 6with a 521. G.H.C. got solid efforts from Mr. Invincible,Vince Wood with 212/584 and Derek Lee with 553 to takea 5-0 sweep over J.C. Spas. James Cox with his “clean”206 1st game, and Norm “SUPER SR” Black with his huge231 3rd game were able to break deuce. Despite no bowlerbreaking the 200 mark, Freek Racing sped out to a 4-1win over Team 23. Jon Brandon “IRON”’ 208/544 leadhis Tri Star Vending team to a near sweep of Team 19 bytaking 4 of 5 points, as Jeff “Spins” Garrison managed200 in Game 3 to pull out the 1 pin lone win for his team.
