OPAC BASEABB developed OPAC BASE both as a stand-alone moduleand as the platform for OPAC PREMIUM. It covers expensesrelated to regular service, based on wear and tear, required toensure high performance for your turbochargers over their lifetime and is conditional on the turbochargers being run withinthe operating limits given on the rating plate. The timing of the services, which include cleaning and the supply of OriginalParts, as well as the deployment of labor, can be planned several months in advance. Downtime is minimized by ABBworking with you to organize the service and maintenance,e.g. to comply with a vessel’s sailing schedule or, in the caseof a power station, when reduced grid demand allows it.

OPAC BASE covers the risk of excessive wear and tear. Original Parts required as a result of this unscheduled incidentare replaced. Travel expenses and shipping and labor costsare invoiced separately.

Delegated turbocharger maintenance is carried out in accor-dance with ABB maintenance recommendations. If, in theopinion of the ABB Service engineer, a part will discontinueperforming as required before the next scheduled overhaulbecomes due, it will be replaced as part of ABB’s proactiveapproach to your service requirements. The cost of thereplacement is covered by OPAC BASE.

OPAC PREMIUMOPAC PREMIUM builds on OPAC BASE by also allowing you to transfer to ABB the risk of unforeseen incidents due to foreign object damage, lack of lube oil, lube oil qualityproblems, etc. You define the number of unforeseen incidentsyou want to be covered by the OPAC agreement.

Operators of stationary power plants who choose OPAC PREMIUM are also offered the option of a downtime guarantee, in which ABB guarantees an agreed maximumlength of time between being informed of the failure causing the downtime and re-start of the turbocharger.

Unforeseen incidentsChoosing OPAC PREMIUM has an extra benefit: The risk ofunnecessary payment for unforeseen incidents covered by theagreement but which do not occur is shared between thecustomer and ABB. At the end of the negotiated duration ofan OPAC PREMIUM agreement, ABB provides an overview of all work performed as a result of unforeseen incidents, together with the corresponding expenses. Should these belower than the amount stated in the OPAC agreement, ABB will share the difference with the customer.

Your unique service requirements demand a unique set of solutions. OPAC was developed by ABB to let you take control of your service scheduling and manage your costs. The modules OPAC BASE and OPAC PREMIUM let you choose precisely the range of services you require.

Customer-oriented OPACFlexibility, accessibility and accountability – OPAC is totally customer-oriented.

AnalysisOPAC delegated service agreements are drawn up individuallyfor each customer taking the following parameters intoaccount:– Turbocharger operation (engine type, fuel, load, washing

requirements)– Application specifics (actual running hours, ease of access,

running hours to be covered by OPAC, sailing schedule androute)

– Local aspects (labor rates, shipping costs, taxes, traveling)

The analysis of your requirements begins with the spare parts.A summary is then prepared on a per-turbocharger basis. Finally, the turbo chargers are grouped as required by the cus-tomer.

Flexibility – you shape OPACThe built-in flexibility of OPAC takes full account of the needfor one-off solutions, tailored exactly to your unique expecta-tions and applications. You determine how long you want an OPAC agreement to run, which turbochargers you want itto cover, and, when OPAC PREMIUM is chosen, the numberof unforeseen incidents you wish to include. Additional spares(swap parts) can be included in the agreement to minimize thedowntime during servicing of the turbochargers. Turbochargerscan also be added to or removed from the agreement to reflectchanges in your business plans. You decide!

One contact for access to the entire networkYour point of contact for OPAC related issues is your localABB Service Station. The Service Station coordinates andorganizes Original Service work to be carried out on your turbochargers within the ABB global network.

Example: A Norwegian customer signs an OPAC agreementwith the ABB Service Station in Norway. Turbocharger serviceis due on one of the customer’s vessels. Based on the vessel’sschedule, the port of Singapore is identified as the most suit-able port for the work. The ABB Service Station in Norwayarranges for the ABB Service Station in Singapore to do thework, including delivery of Original Parts, provision of man-power, such permission as might be needed, and transport.

OPAC reportingABB issues for each Original Service job it performs a reportdetailing information about the vessel, the port in which service takes place, the Service Station responsible, and theexchanged/ repaired turbocharger components. The servicereport is signed by the customer’s personnel on completion ofthe job.

Quarterly OPAC reports give you a timely overview of OriginalService jobs performed, allowing you to let your staff concen-trate on other work. Customers benefit in particular from thetransparency these reports offer. Technical managers canmore easily keep track of their turbochargers’ operational andservice statuses.

Q&A Twelve answers to twelve questions: A quick run-through of issues that might interest customers delegating maintenance, repair and overhaul to ABB Turbocharging Service.

If the unforeseen incidents are more cost-intensivethan ABB expects, couldn’t a Service Station go out ofbusiness? What happens with my OPAC agreement then? Local ABB Service Stations receive full OPAC support fromABB Turbocharging headquarters.

The ABB Service Station that I always work with hasabout 10 people on its staff. Can they manage an OPACagreement?Yes. They will initially receive support from ABB Turbochargingheadquarters. If necessary, they can also be helped with theirOPAC obligations by a larger Service Station.

How will ABB invoice me? To keep OPAC-related administration to a minimum, invoicesare sent on a periodic basis.

We operate our vessels on a global scale. Will therebe an OPAC contact in every port? One ABB Service Station is responsible for each OPAC agreement and acts as the customer’s contact point. Thesame ABB Service Station arranges all OPAC service jobswithin ABB’s Service network – the customer has a singleABB contact but at the same time access to service facilitiesthroughout the global ABB Turbocharging Service network.

1 If I choose an OPAC PREMIUM agreement with fiveunforeseen incidents and a sixth unforeseen incident, notcovered by the agreement, occurs, who bears the extracost? An incident not stipulated in the OPAC agreement is not covered by it and ABB will invoice the customer separately for work performed in connection with it.

Does an OPAC agreement entitle me to extra discounts? No. OPAC was developed to simplify the budgeting processand to minimize the customer’s financial fluctuations. However, favorable parts pricing is a key element of everyOPAC calculation.

Won’t OPAC work to ABB’s advantage by allowing itto cut back on the turbocharger service it provides, andso increase its profits? An OPAC agreement obligates ABB to always follow the turbocharger maintenance recommendations set out in theABB operator manual. In addition, ABB Service engineersissue a report after completion of each job, providing the cus-tomer with the details of the work done. A quarterly reportwith an overview of all Original Service work performed alsoensures absolute transparency.

Q&A

I already give all turbocharger-related service work toABB. How would an OPAC agreement add value for me?OPAC helps you to simplify your budgeting process and cashmanagement. Forward planning with OPAC also gives youmore control over future costs.

What if my power station cuts back on production or even stops producing altogether for several weeks at atime? How would this affect an OPAC agreement?OPAC is based on the turbocharger’s actual running hours – ifthe power station shuts down or produces less, only anagreed minimum amount covering local personnel costs willbe invoiced to the customer.

What about swap parts? You can include swap parts in the agreement to reduce down-time, if you want to. This can make good sense when the timeavailable for on-site service is normally too short. Work canthen be carried out in the Service Station. Payment is basedon the running hour price.

What about force majeur? How do events like strikes, embargoes and so on affect an OPAC agreement? Both parties have the right to suspend the agreement. If theforce majeur event lasts longer than six months, either partymay terminate the contract.

What happens if I want to terminate for convenience? In the event that the cost of performed services and the customer’s payments do not match, ABB will provide anoverview of the performed Original Service jobs and their corresponding costs, on which the parties have to reachagreement. Either a credit or debit note will be issued to compensate the difference.
