INSIDE

Earlier this year, Black & McDonald secured an Extended Services Master Service Agreement (ES MSA) for work at Ontario’s two major nuclear facilities – Pickering and Darlington generating stations. The Pickering and Darlington reactors produce more than 6,000 Megawatts of electricity for the province. The ES MSA team is made up of Tier 1 co-venturers RCMT (Engineering) and Ellis Don (General Contracting) and providers such as Areva, Kinectrics, AMEC, and others. The new agreement has a fi ve-year term, with options to extend the contract for up to fi ve years.

This work is a continuation of the successful Master Service Agreement covering the Pickering and Darlington facilities from 2005 to 2012, originally managed at B&M by Mike Campbell and his staff. The new agreement has a signifi cant increase in the breadth of work and includes engineering, procurement and large construction.

Black & McDonald’s ES MSA team will be involved in concept design, detailed design, and fi eld engineering for a host of upcoming projects, in addition to our traditional roles as a resource

for electrical, mechanical and utility trade labour. “From our customer’s point of view, this contract is all about maximizing value” said Frank MacDougall. “Adding engineering and procurement to our team’s capabilities is a great way to enhance the value proposition and reduce fragmentation of work.”

The Master Service Agreement is based on a performance-incentive fee based structure, which rewards

on-time, on-budget completion and penalizes delays, errors and incidents. By integrating the design and procurement for projects, we can build additional levels of accountability in every step ensuring reduction of human performance errors, cost certainty, and timely project completions.

Fulfi lling the new ES MSA transition is the primary focus of the Power Generation Region for 2012, led by Warren Jones, Doug Gerrits, Craig Sellers, Mike Visconti, and Rocco Cantalini. Since the agreement was signed in February, we

Black & McDonald U.S. Operations has recently been awarded a maintenance contract spanning eight years for 92,000 street lights and 21 traffic signals in Kansas City, Missouri. While B&M has maintained the City’s street light system for the past 10 years, this is the first time Kansas City has outsourced the maintenance of traffic lights; previously it was done in house.

The contract not only presents unique and exciting opportunities for B&M but has the potential to grow into more opportunities. There are over 600 traffic signal locations within Kansas City and the goal is to migrate these to Black & McDonald within the next 12-15 months. This contract gets to the core of what we do and our team is eager to begin!

turbines was completed in November of 2011. These roads snaked through five municipalities in the Monteregie district, covering approximately 100 square kilometers.

The power collector system is very near completion with High Pot testing in progress. 70 km of power and fiber optic cables are installed underground, avoiding obstacles including highways, underground natural gas lines, along public properties and small rivers protected by provincial statutes.

Construction of the substation and the service/control building started in December of 2011. The winter conditions made for rough going with unusually heavy rains, flooding and

then freezing temperatures which added delays and demanded cautious scheduling. However, the service building was finished on time in May; the substation was also completed on schedule.

“We are now at the last phase of our installation work which is the termination of the power cables to each of the wind turbines” says Bernard Hedrei, Project Manager. The Enercon Turbines are being erected by Mammoet with Black & McDonald installing the internal electrical power and control systems.

The Monteregie facility is due to go into commercial operation in December.

have been awarded more than five significant new contracts. To support this work, we have transferred six people from elsewhere in B&M who are already fully engaged. The work forecast under the new ES MSA agreement will require a host of new talent over the next 18 months and perhaps beyond.

The region’s key people supporting the ES MSA and work elsewhere in the Canadian nuclear industry include Tracy

Mason, Jennifer Fair, Peter Sullivan and Frank MacDougall and their staff.

A number of people spent long days preparing the winning submission. Many thanks to Christina O’Donnell, Hans Jambrovic, Marilyn Speziali, Mary Lou Vickers, and Marie Chaban. While the proposal was being developed and submitted, the rest of the Power Generation Region employees continued to perform their work safely and productively.

island country. The Bank of N.T Butterfield & Son Limited (BNTB) and HSBC Bank Bermuda Limited (HSBC) issued a joint RFP for maintenance, cleaning, waste management, landscaping, lease management and other services. iFM submitted its proposal and Notices of Award were eventually received from the banks; iFM signed its first Property Management Agreement with The Bank of N.T Butterfield & Son Limited on December 30, 2011 and its second with HSBC Bank Bermuda Limited on February 1. The PMAs have similar scopes of services and together represent over 24 locations and 700,000 sq. ft. The early and significant success of iFM was only possible with tremendous support from both partners. This includes Mike Daniel, John Blizman and Kazik Danielak from inVenture Limited as well significant B&M support from Scott Harris, Dennis Martini, Raymond Court, Mike Trefry and Andrew McGinn. The IFM offices, located in Bermuda’s capitol city of Hamilton, are occupied by Marilyn Lewis (Project Manager), Jessica Araujo and Terrie Greenslade. Together they support a field staff that currently consists of seven technicians.

Building Information Modeling (BIM): How B&M Uses Digital Design Tools Black & McDonald’s use of 3D CAD tools are increasingly at the centre of the company’s work in the design, fabrication and installation of ductwork and piping systems.

B&M uses industry-standard modeling software including AutoCAD and Quickpen PipeDesigner 3D to ensure constructability, interference-free duct and pipe routing and stronger coordination with other trades to fully optimize our on-site efforts. “We deal with as many problems and issues as possible before the actual work is started, giving the foremen and tradespeople a clear view of the tasks to be performed” says Wyatt Nielsen, Project Co-ordinator, Northern Ontario Region.

Recently, our CAD designers have moved from the offi ce to the jobsite, building 3D models on-site in the construction trailer. This puts the CAD designer in direct contact with the foremen, and allows the designer to easily measure and inspect any interferences or variations from consultant drawings; we can deal with any problems fi rst hand. This also gives the foremen access to the 3D model for dimensions and possible interferences that may result from changes made to our HVAC systems.

On projects that require large amounts of welded piping, our on-site CAD designer models all the piping systems using PipeDesigner 3D. Fabrication sheets from our 3D model are sent to our fabrication shop, where piping spools are created using equipment that is far more effi cient and precise than is available on site. Completed spools are shipped to the job site, which signifi cantly reduces fi eld welds. Doing this saves time and greatly improves productivity on site, keeping projects on schedule and on budget.

At Northern Ontario Region’s fabrication shop, a pair of wire feed welding machines have been installed to enhance our capabilities. “With these machines, we are able to ship large and complex spools. We can complete a six-inch Gas Metal Arc Weld (GMAW) joint in six minutes. The prep time on the joint in the shop is 10 minutes; one worker is producing a spool with valves and 25 joints in one day” says Jason Malone, Project Manager.

We are also using digital design tools to tap the Potash mining industry in Saskatchewan. “Since 2002 we have been prefabricating glycol cooling skids and heat pump skids” says Shaemun Franks, Fabrication Division Manager of B&M’s Saskatchewan Region. “Our fi rst skid design started with a Piping & Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) provided by the client. Construction Manager Blair Carlson scratched a design out on paper over a

weekend, then worked with the shop staff to fabricate what the customer needed” Mr. Franks said.

10 years later, we are still building skids for the client. They are substantially larger, but now B&M employs PipeDesigner3D CAD software to streamline our design-to-fabrication times.

With virtual designing tools, we are able to model the pumps, heat exchangers, air separators, expansion tanks, piping and control valves. The fi nal step in the design is to run an interference check using Autodesk Navisworks project review software. Once all interferences have been eliminated and fi nal design is complete, we provide a Navisworks 3D model of the skid for use in our client’s 3D models.

From the 3D model, pipe spool drawings and equipment placement drawings are created and sent to the shop fl oor and fabrication begins.

Southern Ontario Region has used 3D CAD\CAM since the late 1980’s. The sheet metal industry drove the need for 3D interference due to the fact that their systems were the largest in size compared to other

trades; if an interference was going to occur it was almost certain to impact them. “The technology then was far ahead of its time but in essence is not that far off of what is available today” says Michael Boyer, CAD Operations Manager, Southern Ontario Region. “The recent demand by owners to provide coordinated 3D building models has pushed this ability into the spotlight. With the additional ability to integrate the model data into a laser total station, the implementation of the model to an accurate reality has become a blessing; the time- and money-saving potential is drastic.” Southern Ontario Region has augmented our capacity to include 3D piping & plumbing as well as electrical.

SOR is also using CAD as a pre-planning tool for electrical applications by modeling ‘In slab’ conduits and junction boxes, which allows for signifi cant savings.

“The overall process from a multi-trade standpoint has room for growth and improvement, but it is evident that this is a force to contend with and is here to stay” said Joe Galloro, Electrical BIM/CAD Manager, Southern Ontario Region.
