Hunting & Fishing Lodges

Imagine a place where nature is in its most natural

state, where lakes teem with fish and the abundant

scenery will leave you breathless. Picture for yourself

crystal-clear water or the lone call of the majestic

loon, while savouring the soft splash made as your

lure breaks the tranquil silence surrounding you. This

utopia is none other than Ontario – an accessible para-

dise that you can call your very own.

Ontario boasts more than 400,000 lakes, rivers and

streams – enough water to quench the thirst of even

the most ardent angler. From fly-rodding for trout to

waging war with the mighty muskie, the possibilities

for world-class fishing are endless. If your style of

fishing is to wade a pristine stream or to troll the larg-

est of lakes, we have the perfect spot to lure you in.

Be the first to cast a line to fish that have yet to see an

artificial bait. Re-discover your inner-child while star-

ing at the massive pine trees that line the shore. Revel

in the excitement and exhilaration as you lift the net

under yet another formidable adversary, all the time

wondering why you never made this pilgrimage be-

fore. Dreams can come true, and Ontario is just what

you have been wishing for.

Ontario boasts the world’s largest number of lakeside

resorts and lodges; one of which will be sure to suit

your needs and budget. Take a short drive from the

bustling city to a hidden retreat, or board a plane for a

fly-in getaway, either way you can be assured of pro-

fessional service and a “shore lunch” to remember.

Once summer makes way for winter, a new realm of

fishing is at your doorstep. Take part in the ritual of

ice fishing, and discover the incredible way this activ-

ity can warm your soul on even the most cold of days.

Whether you prefer to brave the elements or warm up

in an outfitters hut, the results through the ice will

amaze and delight you.

Fishing, however, is not the only resource we have to

offer. Come camp in one of hundreds of provincial

parks that are at your disposal. Hike the beaten path or

get lost in your own trailblazing – the wilderness is

endless. Canoe the route Samuel de Champlain once

did, and make history on your own time. Bike, blade

or walk the thousands of thoroughfares, and let the

beaming sun be your timepiece for the days adven-

ture. Relax by yourself or incorporate a family vaca-

tion into the mix.

Marshmallows by the fire, ghost stories in the tent,

and the look of astonishment as a child hooks their first

fish are time-honoured traditions that you owe to your-

self to experience. The hardest part will be deciding

what to do. You name it. Ontario is brimming with pos-

sibilities.

Give Ontario a try this year and discover the beauty and

adventure that this province holds. Its unparelled land-

scape and activities will have you returning year after

year – with memories that will stay with you forever.

Ontario Essentials Fishing Licences and Regulations

All non-residents of Canada must posses a fishing li-

cence to legally fish in Ontario waters. Nonresidents

under 18 may angle without a licence while in the com-

pany of a licenced family member. Non-residents are

also able to buy a “Conservation Licence” which pro-

motes conservation principles. These licences cost sig-

nificantly less than “Regular” licences and involve

lower catch and possession limits. For information on

fishing seasons, limits and other regulations, please con-

sult the Ontario Recreational Fishing Regulations Sum-

mary, which is available at most licence issuers or

through the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Please remember to carry your licence at all times. The

law requires you to show it if a conservation officer

asks to see it.

Ontario Weather Ontario is blessed with a tremendous variance of

weather conditions. Our summer is quite warm with

highs around 28-30 degrees Celsius (82 degrees Fahren-

heit) in the south part of the province and 22-24 degrees

Celsius (74 degrees Fahrenheit) in the more northern

regions. Winter can be quite cold at times, and it is best

to bring lots of warm clothing in order to protect you

from the conditions you may face. Spring and fall will

call for medium to heavy-weight clothing to cover most

conditions.

Crown Land Camping To improve the quality of experience for campers by en-

suring that crowding and over-use of sites is reduced,

there are some regulations about Crown or public land

that you should know about. Non-residents of Canada,

18 years of age and older, are required to obtain a permit

to camp on Crown Lands. This applies to the area north

of the French and Mattawa rivers, from the northwestern

to the northeastern borders of Ontario. These permits are

available from most angling licence issuers and from the

Ministry of Natural Resources District Offices.

Ontario’s Freshwater Fish Ontario has some many angling opportunities to offer

and so many species to target. Check out the most popu-

lar game fish we offer and the Ontario records that they

hold.

Walleye - Ontario is walleye country. You can find great

action for these tasty, golden fish in a variety of settings,

from the Great Lakes to shallow and fertile cottage-

country reservoirs, to deep, clear rivers and lakes on the

Canadian Shield. Ontario Record – 22.25 lbs.

Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass - Both species of

bass are plentiful throughout Ontario and are high on

most anglers sought-after list. From the hard-fought pulls

of the smallmouth to the weedy lair of the largemouth,

you are sure to fall in love with these beautiful fish. On-

tario Record Largemouth – 10.43 lbs. Ontario Record

Smallmouth – 9.84 lbs.

Northern Pike - Ontario offers the most diverse north-

ern pike fishing on the continent, and hooking into a 30-

pound fish can be accomplished. Streamlined bodies and

razor-sharp teeth make the pike a favourable target. On-

tario Record – 42.12 lbs.

Muskie - Ontario muskie anglers generally face two

choices: chase rarer trophies that sometimes exceed 40

pounds or concentrate on quantities of smaller fish, a

relative term when you consider that the average size is

about 10 pounds. A world-record exceeding 70 pounds is

almost certainly lurking somewhere in the province for

those who would take up the challenge of the hunt. On-

tario Record – 65 lbs.

Trout and Salmon - Trout and salmon are a highly

sought after species not only for their fighting quali-

ties, but also for their highly-prized taste. From lines

screaming salmon to leaping rainbows, deciding on

which fish to pursue will be your hardest decision.

Ontario Record – Chinook Salmon – 45.38 lbs.

Rainbow Trout – 29.12 lbs. Brown Trout – 34.38 lbs.

Lake Trout – 63.12 lbs. Brook Trout – 14.5 lbs.

Panfish - Ontario has a long list of small fry that of-

fer dependable action for the whole family. Crappie

and yellow perch draw the biggest followings and

are also the biggest. Besides providing hours of fun

for the angler, they also offer a delightful meal at the

end of the day. Ontario Record – Black Crappie –

3.78 lbs. Yellow Perch – 2.25 lbs.

Even people who live in Ontario can have trouble appreciating the sheer size of this province. Ontario is Canada’s second

largest province, covering more than one million square kilometres (415,000 square miles) - an area larger than France and

Spain combined. More than 11 million people live in Ontario. If you look at a map of Ontario you will notice that the prov-

ince is bounded by Quebec on the east, Manitoba on the west, Hudson Bay and James Bay on the north, and the St. Lawrence

River and the Great Lakes on the south. Ontario’s quarter million lakes and countless rivers and streams hold about one-third

of the world’s fresh water. The rivers of southern Ontario flow into the Atlantic Ocean by way of the Great Lakes and the St.

Lawrence River system. Most northern Ontario rivers flow into James Bay and Hudson Bay. Ontario’s quarter million lakes

and countless rivers and streams played a central role in the province’s history and development. For Aboriginal peoples and

the early European settlers, the lakes and rivers were a means of transportation and a source for food.

Ontario’s varied climate and geography, vast wilderness areas, and countless lakes, rivers and wetlands, support habitat for

more than 3,100 species of vascular plants, 158 species of fish, 80 species of amphibians and reptiles, 400 species of birds,

and 85 species of mammals. In Ontario’s southernmost regions, you will find prickly pear cactus and sassafras trees, while

polar bears roam our northern tundra. Fish: Familiar warm water species include bluegill, channel catfish, yellow perch, and

largemouth and smallmouth bass. Our cool water habitats feature muskellunge, northern pike and walleye. Our cold waters

are home to lake trout, lake sturgeon, chinook salmon, lake whitefish and brook trout.
