Dear GJS Families:

David J. HornbySincere regards,

The month of February was filled with academics and outside the class activities in both Primary and Secondary sections.

Our senior students have completed their mock examinations in their IB Diploma subjects and are now preparing for finals in May. Every school year is important for each child at Global Jaya; however, the last year of Secondary education is especially important for our senior students. They are applying to colleges and universities in Indonesia and around the world and at the same time, preparing for final exams.

Secondary Principals, particulaly Pak Nicolas, have focused on final preparations to support Year 12 students. Each student will have detailed feedback from their teachers, these comments will hopefully aid in preparation for May Finals. Pak Nicolas, along with other teachers, has conducted workshops with all Year 12 students to help them organise themselves, identify strengths and weaknesses in their results and develop strategies to improve their scores in May.

Here are some tips for parents to help their sons and daughters prepare for the May final DP exams:

1. Encourage 7-8 hours sleep nightly and healthy foods and snacks.

2. Ask to look at their revision schedule and results from their mock exams.

3. Ensure they practice past exams at home and create a real scenario (time frame, desk and chair, clock visible).

4. Make sure they have a weekly schedule to review all (6) subjects, with emphasis on subjects which require more attention (scores of 3 or lower).

5. Have reward time, spend time with friends, fitness or other stress release activities.

6. Contact individual DP teachers to hear their feedback and understand how you can support your sons and daughters at home.

Our Primary, Year 6 students are now preparing for the PYP Exhibition, which takes place on the 17 and 18 of March. Students in Year 6 are collaborating on exciting projects and are planning to showcase their ideas and findings to the GJS community and beyond. The 61 students will proudly display their exhibits between 9.35am and 2.00pm on both days.

We anticipate a busy end to Term 3. Remember our Mid-Semester Conferences for parents are scheduled for the 26 and 27 of March. This will help you to understand your child’s needs and how they are performing in their individual subjects.

Finally, the Fun Walk / Run scheduled for Sunday 22 of March should be a wonderful family event. There will be plenty of refreshments, healthy snacks and entertainment for the morning’s scheduled event (6am to 10am). Be sure to sign up before the deadline, 11 of March.

In connection with our unit about “Where We Are in Place and Time” we invited 7 teachers as our guest speakers to learn more about where we are in the world and our connection to other places. Each guest speaker gave a presentation

about a country from a different continent.

Our first guest speaker was Pak Andy. He talked about the state of Texas, which is in the country of USA and part of the continent of North America.

Next, we had Ibu Gabrielle, who shared her knowledge about the Netherlands, which is on the continent of Europe.

The following week, we had our fourth guest speaker, Pak Nicolas Puga. He talked about his home country Peru, a country in South America.

After that, Ibu Sarah shared her knowledge about Australia, which is a country as well as a continent!

After that, Ibu Tina shared information about Tanzania, which is part of the continent of Africa.

Year

Last but not least, we had Ibu Purvi, who shared information about North Sumatra, which is in the country of Indonesia and part of the continent of Asia.

The students have learned so much from you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us, guest speakers!

In our current unit, the Year 2 students have been enjoying spending more time in the school garden. They have taken on the role of gardeners and have planted different plants and are taking responsibility for taking care of them. They have been using a variety of tools and also taking responsibility for cleaning their tools and boots. The students are also measuring and recording the plants’ growth and development in the garden.

On Wednesday, 11th of June, the Year 2 students had a great field trip to Mekarsari Orchard Centre to learn more about caring for plants. The weather forecast was not good, so everyone was dressed for the occasion with boots and raincoats. The amazing thing was that the rain stopped just as we arrived and later the sun even came out! We fed the fish and then learned about how to prepare soil for planting and transplanted some fruit tree seedlings which we were able to bring back to school. We were also able to show our creativity with clay. Everyone enjoyed their day!

On Friday 6 February, the Primary students witnessed a performance by the Year 4 classes during the Primary Assembly. This performance was used as part of the learning process. During the unit under the theme ‘Sharing the

Planet’, the students have been learning about conflicts between humans and nature that are created by our quest to find resources. During the performance, students acted out a selection of conflicts and showed the negative consequences of human actions. During break time leading up to the assembly, some students staged protests in the playground, canteen and Primary Plaza. Other students attempted to create an emotional reaction by acting like abused or captured animals. The assembly concluded with the question, “What can YOU do?” to provoke thought and further discussion within the school community.

As a follow-up to the assembly, students are interviewing students, teachers and their family members to analyze the various reactions to their performance. They will use this information to inform the effectiveness of their plans for their personal campaigns to raise awareness about various human/nature conflicts.

The assembly was an excellent opportunity to use the performance as a method of inquiry for their unit. It has provided a unique opportunity to cycle the experience back into their learning for the unit.

On 26th December 2014, as an introduction the transdisciplinary theme ‘Sharing the Planet ‘, the Year 5s visited PDAM Tirta Cisadane, a government-owned company responsible for filtering water from the Cisadane River. The Year 5s were provided with a tour of the facilities and learned about the processes and stages of filtration.

In addition, the Year 5s had the good fortune to visit Tzu Chi on the same day. Tzu Chi is a non-governmental organization (NGO) with an international network of volunteers that has been awarded a special consultative status. As part of its mission to preserve the environment, Tzu Chi Indonesia regularly carries out activities related to waste sorting and recycling, including sending plastic bottles to Korea that are reused to make clothes using special technology. The Year 5s learnt how to recognize and sort different kinds of rubbish and following this knowledge, we hope students will lead the way to save the environment by practising the 5Rs (rethink, repair, reuse, reduce, recycle).

Water Properties Experiment with Ibu Laili

As part of an inquiry into natural resources, the Year 5s conducted a science experiment with Ibu Laili. Year 5s investigated water properties including universal solvency, capillary action, high surface tension and water anomaly. The experiments provided strong evidence as to why water is so important.

As part of the current unit of inquiry Year 5 students are exploring the central idea “countries participate at varying levels in international

organizations as a reflection of their domestic interests” and were lucky to welcome the Azerbaijan ambassador, His Excellency Mr. Tamerlan Garayev, to Global Jaya. They had the opportunity to participate in an episode of Arena 123, a popular programme produced by TVRI, the biggest national television station in Indonesia.

Year 5s prepared several things for welcoming and interacting with the Ambassador. All of them enjoyed the activities that happened throughout this process, such as learning deeply about Azerbaijan by researching facts and formulating questions. During this stage, they learned it can be so much fun to discover more about other countries.

Finally, on the day, although Mr. Tamerlan and TVRI arrived later than schedule due to heavy rains, the students showed their eagerness and patience. We are so proud that they could give such a warm welcome to the honoured guests. TVRI and the Ambassador expressed that they were impressed with what the students had prepared. Students played many activities with the Ambassador of Azerbaijan including teamwork activities prepared by the PE teachers.

In the afternoon, students played “Cerdas Ria” which involved answering some questions about Azerbaijan. H.E. Pak Tamerlan also gave a short presentation about Azerbaijan. Students were enthusiastic throughout this session. The Arena 123 coverage was finally concluded by exchanging prizes and souvenirs between Global Jaya School and the Azerbaijan Embassy.

The Year 5 students and team would like to say a special thank you to everyone for their support and cooperation. The flexibility with the changing schedule on the day was greatly appreciated. TVRI will inform us when the programme will be aired.

As the summative assessment for the unit Change Matter, the students individually had to create an experiment which includes the properties of materials, the relationship between the characteristics of materials and their

uses, communicating their ideas using their own scientific procedure, etc. They were really enthusiastic in doing the experiments!

For the out unit "Where We Are in Place and Time", the Year 6 students are going to conduct an exhibition. In preparation for this event, students are required to identify an issue related to the transdisciplanary theme. They then need to develop solutions that address the negative impact of their particular issue. Before the exhibition, the students are involved in a development process which includes presenting the issue and its solution to the Year 6 teachers, making a central idea and lines of inquiries, buying materials for their displays and making proposals and suggesting timetables to their mentors. The students are very enthusiastic and creative in making the exhibition happen!

Many Global Jaya School students celebrated Valentine’s Day for 1 week from Monday the 9th to Friday the 13th February. Numerous amounts of students bought flowers for their loved ones. Plaza A (where they sold the flowers) was filled with MYP to IB Diploma

students.

Valentine’s Day is when a person promotes his or her love to another. Pink, red, yellow, and white flowers were sold by year 10 and 11 flower sellers. The student council members in years 10 &11 distributed the flowers during extended tutor group time before home time.

An event called open-mic, was held in Plaza A; it’s where students and teachers perform and let the audience feel the passion and hear the voices of the singers. “It was a great chance to show people your hidden talent and a chance to explore your talents.” Adikara Fardy, a singer from Year 9 who performed, replied with confidence. He sang a duet with Stephanie Dougharty, also a Year 9 student, called “Love me Harder” by Ariana Grande.

Arneta attended the event “My Boyfriend does My Make-Up Challenge” which took place in Plaza A. She said that it was fun but embarrassing at the same time. There were about four couples who participated in this event. Arneta said that this is a good experience for couples.

Mabel bought three cupcakes. Those three were Red Velvet, Chocolate Tart and Chocolate Mousse. She said that the cupcakes were really good and she felt bad for the ones who didn’t try them. A Chocolate Tart cost Rp.15,000; the Red Velvet cupcakes were Rp.10,000 as well as the Chocolate Mousse. She thinks that it is a good idea to use these cupcakes to send message to someone special.

I was very excited to see what these girls could achieve on the basketball court this year. We had a lot of new students join the team this year but with the leadership of the returning players we were able to overcome early season challenges.

The Varsity Girls

By achieving these goals this is how we defined success. Many people look at wins and losses as an indication for success. A win or loss is a formative assessment of a moment in time and demonstrates what was done well and what areas need improvement. We did not fully

achieve all of our goals but what we did do is make an important next step toward excellence. We were able to grow as a team and fight to give us a chance to be successful in each game and this is a huge sense of pride for me to see our young team achieve this.

I am very proud of the desire, passion and toughness this group of athletes demonstrated throughout the season and I would like to thank them for their hard work. I would like to wish all the best to our graduating player Kelsea, she has been an important member for the last 3 years.

Commitment.

Commitment to full court, whole game defensive pressure that is unrelenting.

Composure.

Maintain our composure during the important moments of the game.

Confidence.

Increase confidence in our basketball systems.

Communication.

What better way to enjoy your holiday than being with a group of friends and travelling overseas to meet with almost 500 other students from all over the world in an international conference hosted the Harvard University students?

This January, 26 students from Year 10 and 11 took part in the Harvard Model Congress Asia held at the prestigious Hong Kong University campus. For 3 days, they were all engaged in fruitful debates and discussions in different committees to try to solve pressing issues of world significance. They took different roles; some as delegates from various countries in international committees such as the International Criminal Court; others became Senators or Secretaries in the Domestic Committees of US Government covering all branches: executive, legislative and judicial. Overall, students did very well. One in particular, Gradita Purukan (Year 11), received an “Honorable Mention” as the Secretary of Labor in the Historical Committee.

Students who got the most from this experience stated that they feel “transformed” and have learned a lot from their fellow delegates’ enthusiasm and preparedness. Many were also inspired by the high levels of friendliness, intelligence and determination of their fellow delegates and chairpersons. These, they say, were some of the most surprising components of the event. A spirit of comaraderie was established from the start and friendships soon followed. Some of which will be long lasting and will converge further ahead in university life and beyond.

Apart from conferencing, students were able to spend time together over dinner at the Jumbo Floating Restaurant, watching the night scenery of Hong Kong from the Peak and even enjoying the magic of Walt Disney. The visit to Disneyland on the last night in Hong Kong served as a wonderful reward for the hard work they put into the three day conference.

If anyone is interested to join the HMCA programme next year, please contact Ibu Dani or Ibu Regina by the end of this semester. The HMCA After School Activity itself will start in September.
