GENERATor

FUEL EFFICIENT Tailored SOLUTIONS

BACKED BY EXPERTISE AND SUPPORT

Recent flooding in Queensland’s coal rich Bowen Basin region left many mine operations isolated and without power. The answer? Helicoptering in a fleet of Onsite heavy duty silenced generators to ensure productivity was unaffacted by the lack of road access. Onsite generators are all equipped with certified centre lift points that enable them to be dropped in and out of confined areas and regions with limited road access.

Another example of this the adjacent photos of a 200kva Onsite generator being lowered into the foundation of one of Sydneys highest profile residential developments.

HigherOnsite offers silenced diesel generators from 6kva to 1500kva

Powering Remote Accommodation CampsThis issue’s tech talk deals with the opportunities for cost saving that exist when powering remote accommodation camps or villages. Many of Onsite’s customers operate in remote locations where staff accommodation is at a premium and is often delivered via the construction of remote accommodation camps that run on Diesel Generators.

ONSITE’S METHODThe intra-day load fluctuations experienced by remote accommodation camps present opportunities for material cost savings in power generation. Essentially, peak load occurs for 6 hours per day on average during shower and meal preparation times in the early morning and late afternoon.Load for the remaining 18 hour cycle is commonly 30%-38% of this peak load.

24 |

Page 27: Onsite Magazine Summer 2012

Typically a remote accommodation camp with occupancy of greater than 40 persons will produce a peak load of between 2.8 and 3.5 amps per phase per person. As a rule of thumb, regions with an ambient temperature of 40 degrees celcius and above will use 3.5 amps per phase per person as a peak load estimate and 1.3 amps per phase per person as a base load estimate. This estimate has proven accurate within an acceptable margin of error on many sites throughout Queensland, Western Australia and other high ambient locations.

TRADITIONAL METHOD OF SIZING AND POWERING SITE CAMP POWERTraditionally camp loads have been estimated by consultants using power assumptions ranging from 5kva (6.95 amps) per person and above. This peak load was then used to determine generator size. One generator of this size was employed to provide prime power and a second standby unit of the same size is used as a standby.

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE OF COMPARING TRADITIONAL AND ONSITE METHOD

CAMP OCCUPANCY: 100 PERSONSTRADITIONAL LOAD ASSUMPTION: 6.95AMPS PER PHASE X 100 PERSONS = 695AMPS PER PHASETRADITIONAL SOLUTION: 1 X 675KVA (75% LOADED) GENERATOR RUNNING, 1 X 675KVA GENERATOR STANDBY ONSITE LOAD ASSUMPTION: PEAK 3.5AMPS PER PHASE X 100 PERSONS = 350AMPS PER PHASE BASE 1.3 AMPS PER PHASE X 800 PERSONS = 130AMPS PER PHASE

ONSITE SOLUTION: 3 X 335KVA GENERATORS, 1 X RUNNING 24 HOURS, 1 X RUNNING TO ASSIST WITH PEAK LOAD AND ONE REDUNDANCY

In the above example, a 675kva generator is running 24 hours per day in the traditional solution. The ONSITE SOLuTION uses an engine half the size to provide the 18 hour per day base load. The fuel savings using this method are significant.
