UFCW members have been hard at work on the important job of reelecting President Obama and Vice President Biden. This event—exclusively for UFCW members—is a special opportunity and will include a question and answer session similar to a traditional town hall, except it occurs over the phone. OP UFCW Members Called to Support Walmart Workers During Black Friday Actions Walmart workers are prepared to stand together and take ac- tion at Walmart stores across the country this Black Friday. There are several ways members can support these brave workers as they fight to make Walmart jobs good jobs. Sponsor a Striking Worker To stand up against the largest company in the world, Walmart associates are potentially risking their livelihoods and foregoing overtime and holiday pay when they strike on Black Friday. To help make sure workers can support their families as they take action, go to ChangeWalmart.org/Black-Friday to sponsor a Walmart striker on Black Friday. Be at a Walmart on Black Friday Hundreds of stores across the country are holding Black Friday events. Go to ChangeWalmart.org/Black-Friday to stand with workers on Black Friday. OP Raley’s Workers Set to Strike on Saturday, Workers to Meet with Federal Mediator on Thursday Members from UFCW Locals 5 and 8 who work at Raley’s, Nob Hill, and Bel Air stores in Northern and Central Califor- nia are set to strike at Midnight on Saturday. In an attempt to avoid a strike at the chain, workers will meet with a federal mediator on Thursday. A contract extension is in place until midnight Saturday. Members from UFCW Locals 5 and 8 and the company have been in negotiations for more than a year. Issues separating the parties include medical coverage, contractual rights, and premium pay. The company recently released a “last, best and final offer,” which was worse than offers previously rejected by members. The company announced it intended to imple- ment the changes on November 1. Members, in turn, notified the company that such action would trigger a walkout. UFCW Local 5 represents approximately 1,650 workers at 38 stores. UFCW Local 8 represents approximately 6,000 work- ers at 69 stores. Workers from both local unions will rally for a fair contract in Sacramento on Thursday. The rally will take place at the Matsui Federal Building, 501 I Street, at 10:45 a.m. “Unity and strength are what got us to this point in negotia- tions and it will carry us through to a successful conclusion,” said Ron Lind President of UFCW Local 5 during a recent phone conference with members.
