University SC 6New Town Eagles 0 University SC secured a relatively easy victoryover New Town Eagles on Saturday to progressthrough for an interesting Round of 16 encounteragainst Glenorchy Knights on March 22. University played the better of the football fromthe outset with width and penetration being theirally. While Eagles avenues towards goal wereeither through Jamie Vernon or beyond theUniversity defence. The home side hit the lead in the 12th minute andnever looked back. A dangerous free kickwhipped in by Phineas Aldridge skimmed off thetop of Eagles defender Michael Anderson andpast the helpless Adam Bates in goals. Five minutes later what would have been the goalof the game after a nice build up and through ball

by Ronald John was ruled offside as GeorgeKamano mistimed his run, though finished theplay with a nice strike into the back of the net. The game then turned for the worst for Eagles as astrong challenge by University’s Toby MacGregoron Jamie Vernon saw the Eagles play maker comeoff second best and have to leave the field. After Vernon’s departure Eagles never lookedlike threatening University and the middle of thepitch became a free for all as University ranamuck. Kamano had a number of chances to giveUniversity a larger lead going into half time butwas unable to capatalise on good positioning. It was man of the match Ronald John whoextended University’s lead before the break witha bullet which gave Bates no chance.

Bates whose known trade is as a defender had asolid game in between the sticks for Eagles andhad it not been for a number of brave saves theresult could easily have reached double digits. The second half was much the same as the firstwith University controlling the play and Eaglestrying to catch them out on the break with somespeed up front. The game was all but over when John added hissecond on the 61st minute mark as the Eaglesdefence opened up like Moses parting the RedSea. John received the ball 20 yards from goal andthen wondered in to the box before calmlyslotting the ball past Bates to make it 3-0. George Kamano, Aaron Hindmarsh and Jake Undyadded to University’s tally before the ninetyminutes was up. University running out winners 6-0, this is withtheir most dynamic player Luke Huigsloot

starting on the bench and playing the majority ofthe second half only. In the other Lakoseljac Cup result on the dayClarence United came from 2 nil down to defeatnorthern based side Riverside Olympic 4-2. Clarence will now meet Taroona FC at KelvendonPark on the 22nd March, while Knights will playhost to University on the same date. Prospect Knights were a late withdrawal from thecompetition giving Nelson Eastern Suburbs aneasy path to the Round of 16 where they will faceSouth Hobart. Prospect now become ineligible to participate innext year's Lakoseljac Cup.

NTC stun Olympiawith late flurry NTC 6Olympia FC 4 Over the past few weeks there have beenwhispered words about the slow demise ofWomen’s Football in Tasmania. In the past the Women’s Summer Cup andStatewide Cup fixture has been lost in betweenthe hysteria and competitiveness of the Men’sgame. Well on Monday there could be no onecomplaining about Women’s football as it wasthe highlight of the day. The NTC came from two goals down twice tooutrun an Olympia FC side that looked ratherunfit and at times quite lazy. Both sides didn’t waste any time in testing eachother out with warning shots fired from NTC’sBianca Parker and Olympia’s Bliss Cantrell in theopening minutes. Needless to say it was no surprise to see a goalreasonably early in the match when Olympia’s

Ellie Gavalas put the ball in to the top right handcorner from a difficult angle. Almost immediately NTC’s Innocent Michaelnearly levelled the score forcing a wonderfulsave from Olympia keeper Shelley Cook. The game went up another notch after that and afabulous strike by Rani Cavaretta on the halfvolley left NTC keeper Margot Johnstonstranded and put Olympia up 2-0. NTC captain Stacie Hutchinson then took it uponherself to lift the side when she blasted a shotfrom 12 yards past the helpless Cook in goals. Hutchinson then levelled the scores on the 35thminute mark when a cross from Lucy Johnson fellto her feet and she forced the ball past Cook onceagain. The second half was an end to end affair withboth sides not able to penetrate each other’sdefence. The introduction by Olympia of Allie Berry in thesecond half looked to have been the winningmove for Olympia as her discipline and decisionmaking bought structure to Olympia’s attackand after goals by Rani Cavaretta and a cleverlittle goal by Bliss Cantrell, Olympia looked tohave it sealed with seven minutes to go.

But four moments of individual brilliance by NTCsteered them to victory. Lucy Johnson put a cracker in from just outsidethe 18 yard box immediately after the kick offand a cautious vibe was sent through theOlympia contingent. In the last minute of normal time what will mostlikely be the goal of the year by any male orfemale was scored by Aimee Medwin. Medwintook possession of the ball in her own half

travelled past countless Olympia players playeda nice one two and then slotted the ball underextreme pressure in to the back of the net... Words will not do the goal any justice. The comeback was complete when LucyJohnson capped off her fine match with hersecond goal a minute later when Paige Ayton putin a fantastic free kick NTC became the toast ofthe women’s game.

Wadawu the Magician Tilford Zebras 0Olympia FC 2 Last year due to some confusion around competition rulesOlympia were handed the Summer Cup on a plate. This year no onecan take it away from them. They went through the competition without conceding a singlegoal and gave a glimpse of some exciting new talent. The likes of Jacob Herbert, Gus Rumney & Bruno Almeida have allshown that they are ready for the real thing come the start of the2014 Victory League season. But it was the composure and brilliance of some of the moreexperienced players that shone on Monday when Olympia FCdefeated Tilford Zebras 2-0 in the Summer Cup Final. In particular the performances of Warren Wadawu, Alex Holmes,Jake Vandermey and Ben Phillips were the backbone of Olympia’semphatic victory. While many will say it was only two nil. Those that were there willagree that the scoreboard was not an adequate reflection ofdangerous possession. Both teams started the game testing the water with Zebras lookingfor quick changes of play while Olympia looked to exploit theblack and white with width. On the 29th minute mark a nice move by Wadawu down the lefthand side of the Zebras box allowed Alex Bellini to give Olympiathe edge after the talented winger cut the ball back to Bellini tofinish from 8 yards.

While Zebras had plenty of possession they were unable to break down the Olympia defence andoften over committed leaving ample space in the middle of the park for the likes of Alex Bellini andNick Meredith to structure a counter attack. Add to that the composure of Dmitri Nester in goals for Olympia who was often bought in to the playto subdue any Zebras forward pressure Olympia were just about unbreakable in defence. As the game looked to peter out a moment of individual brilliance by Wadawu gave Olympiainsurance on their already dominate position. Wadawu received the ball just inside the box before he somehow danced around three Zebras defenders in close proximity and struck the ball past Matthew Ferguson from a tight angle. Zebras had a number of players who sold their club and supports short on the day but the likes ofjoshua Fielding and Kurt Engles where positives out of what was a disapponting finish for Zebras. This was enough to give Olympia the win and give their vocal supports something to get excitedabout for the upcoming Victory League season.

This week OTKTB was fortunate to catchup with Tilford Zebras DevelopmentLeague coach Nick Harrison. The Zebras Development League squadthis week took out the Men's ReservesSummer Cup title and we thought it onlyjust to catch up with the man at the helmof the Zebras future. Previous Clubs where you have coached? I have coached at Glenorchy Knights, SouthHobart and I am Currently with Tilford Zebras Current Coaching Accreditation? Senior Licence Future accreditation and ambitions? If I continue in the same role next season i willneed to obtain the C licence, which hopefully Ican do during the off season. You have been at Zebras for four years now?How are you enjoying the development role? Yes I am looking forward to the new season, notsure if 6 teams is enough for the league andhaving to play each team 4 times in my opinion isnot ideal. However we have had a goodpreseason and will be raring to go on the 29thMarch. This role is probably the hardest in theclub ( that's why I'm paid the highest) becauseyou have to wait to know which players aredropping down from the V league for the weekand then pick the team around them, the playersthat miss out will then drop down to the under

20 league and play with Serg, so we have to worktogether to ensure the smooth running of the 3squads. Since you have been at the club there has beenmultiple changes at the top... Any reason whyyou haven't put your hand up to take up therole? Yes I have seen a few coaches come and go, butthe expectation at the club is high as it should beand with only 21 games in a season, if you startbadly then the pressure starts to mount. Afterhaving a go as Senior coach with the Knights I amquite happy at the moment to play a lesser rolewithin the club. But never say never. How do you expect the team to perform thisyear... the Development Team? I will expect the team to win the league, even if itis a development league you still play to win andwehaveanumberofplayersturning20thisyear,so under the current set up if they do not makethe v league squad next season we could seesome of these talented players moving on, So itis important that we give them the best possiblechance to do this, mixing these lads with some ofthe younger lads coming through, the club is in avery healthy position. Who are a few players you would like to pointout for people to watch. I don't really like to point out players but some ofthe younger ones that come through last seasoninclude Luke Warrener and Liam Heffernan whohave both had a superb summer cuptournament. Along with Ryan Woodford. But themain one to watch out for is 16 year old Jacob(Jake) Brennan, he played under 16s last season, impressed in preseason training given a chancethroughout the summer cup and scored bothgoals in our 2-0 semi final win over Knights.

Even with the new accreditation andformation views of FFA, you are one of the fewwilling to coach as each match is played...Why? I believe that because you get to know theopposition players, strengths and weaknessesof the teams it is easier to set your team up toexploit the weaknesses and hopefully win thegame. As much as we all are required to play the4 3 3 formation you can adapt this during thegame to the extent that during the second halfof the game on Monday we played more of a 4 5 1formation to win the game. In my opinion the reason you play football is towin the game so if that means changingformations to do this then so be it, so if you seemy team losing with 15 to go you can ensure wewill give it a go and could end up playing a 3 2 5formation. When it comes off great and when itdoes not then you go home and think what youcould have done different.

2014 SWPL PREVIEW

With the 2014 Southern Women'sPremier League only weeks away OTKTBlooks at the season ahead and gives youits predictions for final standings comeAugust. The Summer Cup isnt always a good indication ofform leading up to the season proper as teamslook to give as many players a run, working outtheir starting squad for the first match in theseason proper or in this case the Statewide Cup. But Olympia are again going to be hard to go past. They breezed past the group stage of this year'sSummer Cup amassing 27 goals in three outings. Zebras and Clarence are the teams most likely tochallenge Olympia throughout the season withboth teams likely to take points off the currentchampions whose main concern looks to befitness nearing the start of the season. The form of Sarah Morris will dictate how farZebras will go this year but with some talentcoming through the ranks we could possibly see achanging of the gaurd at the top. Zebraswereactive inthetransfermarketoverthesummer picking up the likes of Rachel Ridler andDanielle Kannegiesser from Clarence United. These signings may see them pip the EasternShore side in the final standings. Clarence on the otherhand will probably seethings differently and with an abundance oftalent coming through the ranks will seethemselves amongst the mix come finals time. United are a side that plays well as a team. Theyproved last year they have the ability to knockanyside off at any stage.

They have arguable the finest keeper in theleague which gives them added advantage in acompetition that has started to produce anumber of fine strikers. One of which will play for black and red in BronteDavidson. Under new coach Pat Watts University areexpected to fill that fourth place finals spot. University were the real surprise package out oflast years competition and will be looking tobuild on the momentum generated out of their2013 campaign. Mikayla Wedge is a huge loss for the side butWatts is confident that Elissa Bowditch hasshown enough to fill the gap left by Wedge. Taroona FC have lost a significant amount ofplayers from their senior playing group for 2014. They will rely heavily on the likes of Lisa Bremnerand Sabella Ormandy-Neale. Two players whohave now been part of the senior setup for anumber of years. Don't count Taroona out of finals contentionthough, abely coached by Scott Gallagher IfUniversity dont take advantage of Taroona'slosses then you could see the tangarine striprunning around come finals time. Glenorchy Knights made up mainly of playersfrom last years New Town Eagles squad areexpected to be competitive without challengingfor the finals. Knights who have bought virtually the entirewomen's program across from Eagles have anumber of talented players amongst teir playinggroup. The loss of Zoe Nichols to Zebras will hurt the sidein the middle of the park but dont be surprised Iftowards the end of the season Chris Murray hasthe Knights starting to take valuable points offsome of the top sides.

Unfortunately, Brent McKayhad to step down as manager afew weeks into pre-season butwe were fortunate ScottGallagher was ready to step in.Scott has a lot of experience, particularly with young anddeveloping players that fits inwell with the plans we have.

It will definitely be a moredifficult year for us, but we areconfident we will remaincompetitive and push for aplace at the top of the table. Players to look out for: Marion Dunbabin (No 9): quickmovement off the ball andability to score goals Lisa Bremner (No 7): mobile, strong, instinctive player. Oneof the best crossers in the game

Sacha Rose (No 10): strong, wins possession in the middleof the park, excellent ball skillsand distribution Order of Finish: Too hard to call this year due toplayer movements. Clarence and Taroona haveremained very close to eachotheroverthelastfewyearsbutboth have lost players. Zebras have continued toimprove and have added a fewplayers to their list. Uni willsurprise most teams this yearand challenge for the top of thetable. Knights will need tobuild on the last couple of yearsto challenge the rest of thegroup. I think this year will be theclosest we’ve seen for a fewyears.
