ONLINEWINTERFESTIVALFEBRUARY 3–MARCH 15, 2021
1 JAMES EHNES, Artistic Director
The Center for Chamber Music
2
Dear Friends,Seattle Chamber Music Society’s 2021 Online Winter Festival comes to you from the Center for Chamber Music in downtown Seattle. After a successful 2020 Virtual Summer Festival that reached music lovers from 43 states and 19 countries, it was an easy decision to stream a new series of six concerts this winter.
Planning for this Festival wasn’t without challenges. We took into account travel restrictions and required quarantine times, the importance of regular testing, and limiting access in the Center. Recording in the Center also dictated that many of our ensembles would be smaller than our typical programming at Benaroya Hall.
We are extremely pleased by the wide range of pieces on these programs from duo sonatas to a string quintet, from beloved favorites by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johannes Brahms, to works never heard before at the Festival like William Grant Still’s Mother and Child and Robert Schumann’s second Violin Sonata.
Audience feedback from the Virtual Summer Festival was instrumental in our planning for the current Festival. Our production team has worked to bring you the best sound and picture to make these performances as close to being in the concert hall as possible. The concerts will be released twice a week over three weeks. And once all the concerts are available online, you’ll have three additional weeks to stream them or watch them again until March 15.
Thank you for joining us in the digital concert hall this winter. We hope that these performances help you find moments of peace, joy, and inspiration.
JAMES EHNES Gilbert Omenn and Martha Darling Artistic Director
CONNIE COOPER Executive Director
WELCOME2021 Winter Festival
3
40 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE On June 30, 1982 on a warm Seattle summer evening, Seattle Chamber Music Society (SCMS) was launched with a concert featuring Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Violin Sonata in F Major, K. 377, Frederic Chopin’s Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 65, and Johannes Brahms’ String Sextet in B-flat Major, Op. 18.
Forty years ago, when Seattle Chamber Music Society’s founder Toby Saks invited a handful of musicians to join her to play music with friends, she probably never dreamed of the growth and sustainability that the organization would achieve. The Festival started with six concerts over two weeks and now has grown into a Winter and Summer Festival with eighteen concerts over six weeks, plus a range of educational events, community programming, and our new home at the Center for Chamber Music!
Over the first few years, the Summer Festival evolved to take the shape that we know of today with four weeks of concerts and the addition of free pre-concert recitals with music selected by the artists. After 10-plus years, the concerts at Lakeside School were met with great success and full houses. Connie Cooper was hired as Executive Director in 1996, which led to further expansion of SCMS and in 1999, the first of our Winter Festivals was launched, adding a second series of concerts in January at Benaroya Hall’s Nordstrom Recital Hall. Over the next six years, the Winter Festival expanded to the series that we enjoy today.
Lakeside School’s bucolic setting wasn’t large enough for our growing audience. For 7 years, the Summer Festival extended by two more weeks on the Eastside. Then in 2010 the Summer Festival moved downtown into the acoustically superb Nordstrom Recital Hall in Benaroya Hall, where all of our concerts now take place. To recapture a sense of Lakeside’s idyllic setting, SCMS launched our Music Under the Stars program to share chamber music in local Seattle parks, which now reaches five different neighborhoods with live concert broadcasts and student performances.

To share our love for chamber music with as wide of an audience as possible, in 2012 the Summer Festival added a free outdoor concert in Volunteer Park. Our annual Chamber Music in the Park concert regularly attracts more than 3,000 concertgoers on a beautiful summer evening to picnic, visit with friends, and listen to unforgettable performances.
In 2012, following Toby Saks’ 30 years as Artistic Director, James Ehnes took over the role. Under his guidance, SCMS has recorded 3 commercial CDs, commissioned new chamber music works, and gained an international reputation.
In 2019 we undertook a capital campaign to build our new home downtown to consolidate rehearsal spaces, add a small performance space, and expand our administrative offi ce. At the same time, the campaign raised funds to grow our endowment, ensuring fi nancial stability and providing sustainable support for new artistic programs.
Thanks to the just completed Center for Chamber Music, despite the pandemic, SCMS was able to fi lm performances in the Center and present a full 2020 Virtual Summer festival online, expanding the reach of our audience to 43 states and 19 countries. The 2021 Online Winter Festival continues that tradition of bringing you the fi nest chamber music performances by leading musicians from around the world. In our 40 years, 412 musicians have performed music that spans over 400 years of music history. We look ahead to many more years of sharing memorable performances with you!

COVID SAFETY PRECAUTIONSWe moved into the new Center for Chamber Music in March 2020. We were looking forward to opening the doors and inviting patrons in to see this new space; all of those opening celebrations have been put on hold.
Since our 2020 Virtual Summer Festival, one of the most common questions that we’ve heard is “how have you kept musicians healthy?”.
When we made the shift to stream the 2020 Summer Festival concerts online some musicians came to Seattle to record their performances. We created a plan to
2020 Summer Festival at the Center for Chamber Music

ensure everyone’s health was the top priority guided by a strict policy of who was allowed to be present during fi lming, regimented cleaning schedules, and extensive rapid testing for everyone entering the building.
This meant a bare minimum of staff in the space at any time. During the Festival recording periods, no one could enter the space before receiving a negative COVID test on a weekly basis. Each day, everyone’s temperature was taken before they entered the building. Throughout the day, staff sanitized high touch surfaces like doorknobs and piano keys to minimize risk.
During the 2020 Virtual Summer Festival we had no positive cases by staff or musicians, allowing us to produce a full 12 concert series.
We are following all of these same procedures for our 2021 Online Winter Festival to bring you new and exclusive performances during this time when we are not able to gather together at Benaroya Hall. Music heals, and we look forward to seeing you in the virtual concert hall.
