Dear Campus Bible Church,
We hope this will be a helpful guide for you this morning as we sing, pray and look at God’s Word together. !ings are going to look a little di"erent for us as we cannot currently meet together in person, but our desire is that we can still support each other and point each other to Jesus during this time.
!e current situation is unfortunate, but we think it’s a great opportunity to support, encourage and serve one another in di"erent ways. So as long as these circumstances persist, we hope you’ll use these Sunday morning times to gather with your family or a small friend group and worship God together.

Introduction:
2 Timothy 1:6 “For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh (i.e. to fan into flame) the gift of God which is in you…”
Review of 1 Peter 3:1-6 – speaking to wives
Now we come to 1 Peter 3:7 – speaking to husbands
“A One-Verse Marriage Manual”
1 Peter 3:7 “You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker,
since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be
hindered.”
Mini-Chapter 1: Marriage is a Two-Person Event
1 Peter 3:7 “You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way…”
The context: The apostle Peter is talking about the earthly obligations of every heaven-bound, born-again Christian.
• Christian citizens obligated to submit to government
• Christian workers obligated to submit to their boss
• Christian wives obligated to submit to their husband
• Christian husbands obligated to submit to their wife’s needs
“The greatest thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother.”
1 Peter 3:7 “You husbands in the same way, live with your wives…”
Peter is talking about living together in a God-ordained unity of body, soul and spirit
In the theological mathematics of marriage: 1 + 1 = 1
Psalm 133:1 “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity!”
1 Corinthians 11:3 “But I want you to understand that Christ is the
head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ.”
Mini-Chapter #2: Marriage Requires Constant Attention to Details
1 Peter 3:7 “You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way… (lit. according to the facts)”
Peter’s Three Reminder Calls to Husbands
Reminder #1 - Pay constant attention to the fact that your wife is physically different.
1 Peter 3:7 “You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker…”
Reminder #2 - Pay constant attention to the fact that your wife is emotionally different.
1 Peter 3:7 “You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker,
since she is a woman…”
As a fellow human being the woman has many of the same emotional needs as a man, but as a female human being she
also has those that are different than the emotional needs of a male human being.
The Ancient Law of Marital Bliss Deuteronomy 24:5 “When a man takes a new wife, he shall not go out with the army, nor be charged with any duty, he
shall be free at home one year and shall give happiness to his wife whom he has taken.” (Deuteronomy 24:5)
Proverbs 15:16-17 “Better is a little with the fear of the Lord, than great treasure and turmoil with it. Better is a dish of
vegetables where love is, than a fattened ox and hatred with it.”
Ephesians 5:25-33 “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her; that He
might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the
church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she should be holy and blameless. So,
husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; for no one
ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, because we are members of
His body. For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become
one flesh. This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. Nevertheless let each
individual among you also love his own wife even as himself; and let the wife see to it that she respect her husband.”
Reminder #3 - Pay constant attention to the fact that your wife is spiritually the same. 1 Peter 3:7 “…and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.”
(cf. Galatians 3:28, cf. Genesis 1:26-27; 1 Peter 1:4)
Mini-Chapter #3: Marriage is a Highly Spiritual Issue
1 Peter 3:7 “You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker,
since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be
hindered.”
“hindered” = thwarted, wearied to the point of being ineffective, cut down
Concluding Challenge:

Before I close, I want to offer something for you married couples who are serious about what the apostle Peter wrote.
Regarding Renewing Vows
In Ecclesiastes 5:4-7 King Solomon speaks of the importance of keeping our vows, telling us that is it better not to make
vows than to make a vow and not keep it.
Ecclesiastes 5:6 “…do not say in the presence of the messenger of God that it was a mistake.”
cf. Ezekiel 16 - Almighty God renews His covenantal vows with His unfaithful and spiritually adulterous bride, Israel.
Believing that Almighty God has brought us together, we willingly renew our marriage vows and commit ourselves to live together as joint heirs of the grace of life.”
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 “Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up. Furthermore, if two lie down together they keep warm, but how can one be warm alone? And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart.”
Discussion Questions: 1. In what way is marriage a fighting unit? What specifically are the enemy forces that threaten marriages? 2. What details do you often neglect in your marriage? 3. In what ways does communication with God become hindered because of unresolved conflict in marriage? 4. What part of this message would you most want your children and grandchildren to understand and apply? 5.
