As a scientist and pharmacologist interested in nutrition and disease prevention, I believe that now, more than ever, more scientists should be directly involved in the education of the general public on issues related to environment, health and disease prevention.

On this note I am very enthusiastic about my work at various levels with a plant of extraordinary potential—Moringa oleifera. Moringa is a plant possessing an impressive nutrient profile and numerous therapeutic qualities. For instance, the plant contains hundreds of phytochemicals (plant-specific substances), nutritional compounds ranging from vitamins and minerals to omega fats and all essential amino acids. We also know it can clean and disinfect water (functioning even better than aluminum sulfate, a standard water flocculant), has antibacterial and antiviral properties, and contains powerful antioxidant and anticancer substances and other important compounds such as cytokinins (zeatin). It also can function as a natural growth stimulant for other plants. Moringa has uses outside of the human health and medical realms—it is a terrific high-nutrient feed for animals, it is useful in agro-forestry, and its oil has the potential to be used as biodiesel fuel. In many ways, Moringa truly appears to be a “miracle” plant.

However, there is still an urgent need of further research—especially of human studies—to ascertain the therapeutic qualities of Moringa.

So far, scientific findings suggest exciting healing potential for Moringa. It may:

investigating the positive cardiovascular attributes of Moringa produced impressive results. So what does the future of Moringa hold? I believe we have only touched the tip of the iceberg—as future research and use of this noteworthy plant will reveal even more amazing qualities of Moringa. I am pleased to add my efforts to those of many people and groups worldwide who are striving to successfully use Moringa in the areas of malnutrition, poverty and various diseases. I also believe that if Moringa is widely consumed as a regular part of a healthy diet, the health advantages could be enormous in every part of this world.

Due to its richness in nutritive substances, the Moringa tree has attracted much attention for its ability to provide a complete food and a commercially viable product. In fact, Moringa is now being utilized in various areas where extreme poverty and hunger are constant threats—all with terrific results.

Dr. Monica Marcu reports in her book, The Miracle Tree, that various groups, charities and humanitarian organizations are seeking to increase the exposure, agriculture and use of the Moringa plant within impoverished areas. She reports on an extremely impressive project titled “Mother and Child Health,” which was carried out in Senegal. In an effort to combat childhood disease and death linked to malnutrition, locally grown Moringa (in leaf powder form) was given to infants, their breast-feeding mothers and pregnant women. Due to prohibitive costs, the classical approach to malnourishment (milk powder, vegetable oil, and sugar) was rejected in favor of the locally grown Moringa.

The results were exciting, and more than expected. Children were weighed before a two- to three-month regimen including Moringa powder in their daily food. Pictures documenting the “before-and-after” results were startling, showing that the children were significantly healthier and gained weight under the Moringa supplement. Also, malnourished mothers who previously could not produce enough breast milk were able to provide more for their infants after consuming the Moringa supplement. Amazingly, some of the participants in this study survived only on the Moringa plant powder!

RoD: You have been in the nutritional industry for 35 years, are sometimes called “the father of encapsulated medicine,” and have founded and grown two successful multi-million dollar network marketing companies—Nature’s Sunshine Products and Enrich International. Tell us about your experience getting started in this industry.

Ken: In 1972, my family and I had a meeting and decided to start a business. We invested a total of $1,000 between seven family members. That became known as Nature’s Sunshine Products, the first company on a commercial scale to encapsulate an herb. I was there a number of years as the first president. A short time after I purchased a company called Enrich International. We grew to a huge company and I sold all of my interest by 2000.

RoD: How is it you got back in the industry and started Zija International?

Ken: I saw a presentation on the Discovery Channel about a tree called Moringa. I became extremely intrigued because I had never seen a product like this that had so much nutrition in it and so much potential. Here was a product that eclipsed everything that I had seen in my 35 years. Within an hour after seeing that presentation, I had determined that I was going to get back in the industry.

RoD: I know you have a great love for the distributors. Why is the trust from the corporate side to the field side so critical?

Ken: Without the right distributors, you cannot succeed even if you’ve got everything else in place. You cannot grow a business and have it be profitable if you don’t have the right field people. And we have the very best. As you make your distributors your partners and have the trust in them that they have in you, then you can’t help but succeed. The company is strong, vibrant, well financed, and has a great management team and a great product. Then we get strong field leaders and there’s nothing that’s going to stop us from growing and becoming a huge success.

RoD: Well you just pretty much summarized what a unique opportunity this is. In your mind, what sets Zija apart from the rest?

Ken: We have every piece in place. And with all of the pieces in place there’s no reason we can’t out-run and out-perform all the companies out there. Also, we have a binary form compensation plan that is ahead of all the industry leaders and the very best out there.

RoD: With so many uncertainties in the economy and job security at a low point, why should someone consider joining Zija International?

Ken: I have never seen or lived in a time like this. When you get into downturns in the economy, more people lose jobs and worry. They start turning to this industry where everybody is a potential customer and business builder. People who have never been in the industry before can become extremely successful in our company.

RoD: You told me that you could achieve in the next 5 to 10 years what it’s taken you previously 35 years to accomplish. And it’s amazing that you decided to create a new direction for this company. Not only do we have a great compensation plan, but you have also created a path with benchmarks to put aside 25 cents of every net dollar of profit to put back into the distributors’ pockets in the field. It’s never been done before. Tell me, why do that?

Ken: Most company compensation plans put the distributors at odds with the owners of the company. The distributors do not always understand the mentality of the company (that they’ve got to be healthy and profitable to be able to pay the bonuses) and the company people do not always understand the distributors. When you start analyzing how to eliminate that barrier and make a whole team across the board, the best way is to share the profits of a company. In essence we are making some of the key company players become owners in a symbolic sense to where they participate in the profits of the company. Then they have not only their interest in mind as a distributor, but they also have the company’s health in mind because that’s going to generate more income. It becomes a great opportunity.
