her dress, and the newspaper held contests around the country to find
women who personified Fluffy Ruffles. Macy's carried a line of clothing in her name (shirtwaist, fitted
jacket, large plumed hat and a parasol). There was a Broadway musical, sheet music and even candy

18. [Paper Cutwork] A Cutwork Depicting Sea Captain, Young Woman and Soldier and more
c1850s. Comprised Completely of Layered Cut-work
An intricate little scene comprised of multiple layers of polished and textured paper. A young woman and a sea
captain stand hand-in-hand in a clearing. A rifle is laid atop a large rock in the foreground. A rabbit and two birds
lay nearby (perhaps having been shot). A small dog looks on while at water‟s edge. A myriad of greenery with a
trellis flanks the border of the image while a large tree with intricate leaves creates the background. Beyond the tree
is a soldier with saber in hand. To the sailor‟s left are evergreens, rock and a snow cap or rapid water flowing
between the soldier and the couple. There is a third man lurking to the left (head lacking). The detail on this work

19. [Sketch Book] [Massachusetts] 1883-84 Sketch Book Diary in Graphite & Watercolor, Ashburnham, MA.
An unpaginated sketch book, belonging to N. Helen Rowley, Ashburnham, MA, executed in graphite and watercolor
with occasional accompanying verse or caption. It depicts various views of landscape and scenery in the surrounding
area. Many of the drawings are captioned or described on the reverse. Some are associated with outings and social
events. One pencil sketch depicts a young woman sitting on a rock sketching in an album. Another depicts a scene
of a large home on a hill with mountains in the background. The reverse identifies the scene as the Summit House,
Mt. Wachusett and Princeton Mass., followed by
the autographs of those in attendance. According
to the dates noted, after the 1883 social season, the
medium changes from graphite to watercolor. That
time frame also brings the addition of appropriate
quotable verses presenting a more formal or
structured appearance.
The book again reverts to the more casual
presentation style. One somewhat naïve, yet dear,
image depicts a woman reading while seated on a
hammock held in place by a tree and a post, while
nearby a young girl sits on a straight back chair,
also reading while a second woman sits in a chair
sketching --perhaps a self-depiction. Each woman
is wearing a fanciful hat.
Also included are drawings of the Island on
Naukeag Lake, Allen Burr (a neighbor?) taking his
lunch at the pic-nic in Handley Woods, Old Tree -
Handley Woods, "The Ward and Mary" (named
trees) Ashburnham, The Bastile at Handley Farm, Island in Secretary Lake, Mill Dam under Jewell Hill, Naukeag
Club House, Frankort Hill from the Fence, Fort Winthrop - Governor‟s Island and more. There are twenty-two (22)
plus sketches in the book. Measures 6" x 9 7/8". Additional images on covers and by request. $500.00

facing birds perched on branches, again joined by the rectangle. The
base decoration is a heart with the familiar rectangle within the heart.
