Food Science and Technology

!2

How do we see the whole field of Food Science and Technology ?

To make a consumer product you need to know the technical disciplines, but you also have to take other aspects into consideration that determine the quality and safety of a product. Even though all three are related, there are many differences between these fields.

Therefore in Wageningen we have three separate MSc programmes: Food Technology, Food Safety and Food Quality Management

Online Master Programme

•Courses (30 credits)Year 2

•Thesis (36 credits) •Internship (24 credits)

Year 3+4

For whom? Students with a Food background and a job, who want to work on their career What it is not This is not the same programme as the Campus Food Technology programme. It is a more generic/broad food technology programme targeted at people who already have work experience. It is not possible to switch from the on-line programme to the campus programme or vice versa. Not a replacement during Corona (see notes !).

How ? From home, with a workload 20 h per week 2x 2 weeks visit to Wageningen (February) for practical work Thesis and Internship can sometimes be done related to your current job

An on-line MSc is not the same as a Campus-based programme. It is taught fully on-line as a part-time programme. It thus takes 3-4 years to complete. It is targeted for people who already work in the food industry and want to make a career move.

Content-wise it is not the same as the Campus programme. It is not as specialised and has much less practicals, but is a more generic or broad food technology programme. Due to the different set-up and content, it is not possible to switch between the on-line and the campus-based programmes. If you start with OMFT you will have to finish the programme as OMFT.

The on-line MSc thus is not a replacement for the Campus MSc during Corona times. When Campus education is not possible (due to restrictions in the Netherlands, or travel restrictions for students), we will offer the regular Campus education by remote education. When the situation changes, students can come to Campus and continue the normal education. All specialisations will be offered by remote education. Remote education will also take the normal 2 years. The OMFT programme will be offered part-time only.

Admission requirements

!4

Each MSc programme has three admission requirements: - a relevant BSc degree - a gpa (average mark) - an English test

The following requirements are for OMFT:

• Relevant BSc degree

• Food Technology / Food Engineering or similar • Biotechnology / Chemical Engineering (when at least > 30 ECTS of food related

courses)

• For other degrees see https://www.wur.nl/en/show/Application-Food-Sciences.htm

Admission requirements : gpa

!5

Wageningen University has a strict gpa rule;

• Minimum gpa of ≥ 70% of maximum scale (NL/GR : ≥ 7.0) absolute (not weighed) average of whole BSc programme (all years count equally)

• A second class upper degree for a UK-based educational system • As many countries have a different system, see the application page of Wageningen

University for the gpa requirements of your country: (https://www.wur.nl/en/show/International-credentials-evaluation-guideline-september-2019.htm).

• for some countries stricter rules apply, see admission document for the food programmes posted here on the On-line Open Day pages or here: https://www.wur.nl/en/show/Application-Food-Sciences.htm

• The gpa requirement is very strict. For example on a 10-point scale 7.0 is admissible, a 6.9 definitely is not.

➔ If your gpa does not meet the minimum level for your country, you will always be rejected. Application thus is useless. ➔ There are two exceptions to the rule :

➔ If you have at least 5 years of relevant work experience, we may deviate from the gpa requirement ➔ If you have a (proven) medical reason why part of your marks are too low, or if you are a recognised top

athlete we may also deviate

– For other accepted tests, see https://www.wur.nl/en/Education-Programmes/master/Apply-for-a-Master-programme.htm
