History of the DegreeEstablished in 1957, The Florida State University Program in Higher Education boasts a long tradition of excellence in preparing students for successful careers in higher education and in disseminating research on higher education policy issues at the national, state and institutional levels.

The master’s degree in higher education (general administration) has been a part of the higher education program for more than thirty years. The online track was developed over a three-year period through a grant funded by the University. Course development and faculty training were completed in 2010 and the program became fully online in the fall of 2011.

Program Overview Degree Requirements Admission InformationThe Master of Science in Higher Education General Administration prepares students to work in a variety of higher education administrative positions. The coursework can be completed at a distance through our online program. This approach is ideal for students interested in intermediate management positions in higher education; yet do not have time to commute to campus due to busy work and family schedules.

The general administration program prepares students to work in higher education administrative positions that emphasize institutional planning, financial management, program evaluation, policy research, and related general administration and financial competencies. This degree is designed for individuals interested in positions associated with institutional research, development and alumni affairs, business management, human resources, auxiliary enterprises, academic support services, student services, financial services, and athletics administration.

The Master of Science in Higher Education General Administration program is a 40-credit-hour, online graduate program. Most students who remain continuously enrolled can complete the online master’s degree in seven consecutive semesters of part-time study while completing two courses per semester.

Students Interested in enrolling in the General Administration Online program can begin their coursework during the fall, spring, or summer semesters. Deadlines for all application materials are as follows:

Applicants are required to submit a current GRE score, college transcripts, a letter of intent and three letters of reference. Evidence of work experience in higher education settings is desirable.

Online Master of Science in Higher Education General Administration

Upon completion of the Higher Education General Administration program, the graduate will be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills relevant to the management and administration of higher education institutions, apply professional best practice standards to realize the core mission of an academic enterprise, use critical thinking and problem solving competencies to address long and short term organizational objectives, and delineate a personal code of professional ethics.
