Suggested Online Dictionaries for Kids A guide for parents and homework helpers

Wordsmyth Kids Illustrated Dictionary https://kids.wordsmyth.net/wild/ This website, created for K-3 readers, is a great introduction to dictionaries. Click the “Book” tab to search for a word. Entries include a pronunciation guide, spoken pronunciation (speaker icon), definitions, part of speech, example in a sentence, and a Spanish translation. *This site requires Flash, so is a good tool to use from a computer. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work on iPads or iPhones. A higher-level children’s version can be found at: https://kids.wordsmyth.net/we/ LEARNER’S DICTIONARY http://learnersdictionary.com/ This is one of several free Merriam-Webster online dictionaries. Entries include a pronunciation guide, spoken pronunciation (speaker icon), definitions, part of speech, example in a phrase and occasionally an illustration WORD CENTRAL www.wordcentral.com This website uses definitions from the Merriam-Webster Online Student Dictionary. Although it was created for students ages 11-14, it has an easy-to-use format and includes a pronunciation guide, spoken pronunciation, part of speech, and multiple definitions. It includes over 70,000 words and over 700 illustrations. Additionally, it includes a thesaurus and rhyming dictionary.
